Hatching FAQ

The Timing

The hatching time: Saturday, October 24th at 10pm Eastern/7pm Pacific. Check out http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/converter.html if you need to convert to another timezone.

The hatching should take less than an hour, so please bring your game face as it help us keep things moving if you all pose consistently. You will not believe the number of hatchings put on pause as we wait for Mary Sue to finally pose before we hit the Impress button, or Robert Bobby to pose his reaction before we send another onslaught of hatching spam to the sands.

We'd like all candidates to be on at least 30 minutes prior to the hatching if possible. We like starting on time and part of starting on time means everyone needs to be here.

What's this I hear about not showing up?!

That's right. If the time does not work for you, or RL happens? Don't worry about a puppeteer. If you are slated to Impress, we will write a fill-in pose that lets your fellow candidates and the spectators know you Impressed and to what, but you do not have to physically BE online if you cannot be. Do not scramble. Do not worry.

The robes

ICly, the headwoman's staff will have left a robe bin in the barracks. Robes are tuber sacks pretty much, something to slip on quickly with very little shape. Long hair will have to be pulled back and we have thick-soled shoes for you to wear -- no flimsy sandals that'll fry your feet. This isn't an exercise in sadism.

OOCly, you don't have to desc your robe. Even if you do, don't ask us to check it: it's just not a priority. We trust that all of you are mostly mature enough not to do stupid things.

Hopping on the sands

You will be ushered on the sands about 5 minutes before 10PM. Once there, all candidates will bow toward the clutch parents before they form up a loose semi-circle. There will be no group bow pose. Please don't pose touching any of the dragons or eggs until you Impress (You will know when it happens). Also, don't pose any of the NPCs getting knocked over, mauled, etc... We'd love other NPC flavor, though, but if you're spammed, don't feel compelled to pose your NPCs on the sands. We will handle all the NPC Impressions.

Posing guidelines

The general rule of thumb is one pose per egg/hatchling pose. When scenes get to be big, I like to focus on the characters physically closest to mine, so it's a smaller cluster within a larger scene. We would like you to pose consistently enough that we know you're still alive.

Do not worry about pose order.

Please, for the love of tiny monkeys and bananas, TRY NOT TO EMIT. It really helps us keep track of who posed and who hasn't when your name is at the front of poses.

Also, for the love of tiny monkeys and bananas, DO NOT POSE MORE THAN EIGHT LINES, if even that. This is going to be fast-paced and spammy, no one will bother to read your 10 lined masterpiece of English literature.

Impressed!

If you Impress, you will know it. Impression messages will include your new name/honorific and dragon's name. Your own name should automatically be changed by the code if you have an honorific or have shortened it.

It is your moment, feel free to act according to how your character would react. Meaning: you do not have to say your dragon's name outloud if you do not wish to, but we would appreciate it if you did include the new dragon's name in the pose, even if not spoken. Capiche?

IF. IF. IF. If you do not like your dragon's name, and absolutely cannot live with it. Skip mentioning the name entirely and +mail hrwadmin. We will discuss options with you at a later point that evening when things are not as spammy. We would also like to suggest that you spend a night sleeping on it; some names just grow on you. Some don't. We want you to be happy with it in the end.

Impressed: the code review!

There is none. Really. The dragon is automatically chowned to you. You will have a DTU automatically set up. The only thing you really have to do is set up a BPC to be able to control the puppet and you can find information on that in +help bpc. If you need help, please don't hesitate to ask.

And that is all you have to worry about immediately post-hatching. If even that. Basically: don't worry.

Post Impression

After Impressing, you will be led to a 'quieter area' to take care of your dragon's needs. OOCly, you will find yourself in the weyrling barracks. You will not see anything going on on the sands unless you '+watch/on hrw-sand'. Your puppeteer will play the new dragon for as long as they are able or you wish. They will be encouraged to page you once you Impress.

What? I didn't Impress?

If you do not Impress, please give yourself and us a night's sleep and a day to think on it, then contact us by +mail hrwadmin or page K'del directly if you'd rather. We'll set up a time to chat, but we would really appreciate at least one night to sleep on it and wake up refreshed in order to give you our undivided attention.

Contingency Plans!

Yes, we have one. Yes, we have been trained well through years of flaky games.

If the game goes down, we will have the hatching on Too instead. The address for Too is: too.logrus.com 6660 then @tel #237.

How can I keep track during the hatching?!

+hatch/results from any HRW room.

I have another question!

+mail hrwadmin and we will answer it for you and post it to the FAQ.
