| The non-descript bar was packed this warm night in Telgar. It was the perfect night to linger, to watch, and to listen. Bareta can do all those things well. That was something Bareta was always good at. Nevermind that she had quite the colossal temper. She always did, and she always will. Kinervus was out scouting their next move in the area. It was his idea for them to keep on moving, and they've been doing so for the last 10 turns. He was the paranoid one. He was the jumpy one. Ever since that bitch- No, she's not going to name her. Since they split with Deetan, they've been on the move. For the last turn, it's been all over Telgar, and already Kin was planning for their next jump. He was zeroing in on Deetan's whereabouts and thought it was time for them to join up again. Bareta was against it, but, Kin was insisting. Bareta chooses her battles. So, here she was, alone, drinking her fourth beer and watching. And listening. Some of the men check her out and she likes that. She's always tempted, but she never rolls out on Kinervus. He was her rock, her dream, her soul mate. Ever since he walked into her tempestuous life, they've been inseparable ever since. She wanted to go back to the Reaches - back to Crom - but ever since that close call, Kin won't even look in that direction. They were very close to being caught several turns ago with that botched heist, but Deet's girl, Jolie, took the fall. The bitch was just too slow to move. Like Bareta had warned from the beginning, Jolie was going to slow them down, and she reveled afterwards in her 'I told you so's. The bitch wasn't suited to their way of life, and now she's been rotting in the mines for it. She's probably even dead there, since as far as Bareta was concerned, she didn't have the balls to survive such a place. Sometime in the past, Bareta had felt just a smidgen of remorse for what happened to Jolie for Deetan's sake, but it passed. She knew the former trader had been smitten with the girl, so losing her to the mines was a heavy blow. It was far too late to play the 'I should've/would've/could've' game. If either of them had turned around and gone out to rescue the holdgirl, they would've all been rotting in the mines beside her. It was a sour move, but Bareta had made her decision not to be the one in the mines. Jolie got caught. Jolie deserved to rot. Still, Bareta was getting tired of running and jumping at imaginary shadows. The pickings were good in the Reaches, and she missed being there. Surely Kin can see reason that it was time to come back? Especially with the Weyr there being in boiling turmoil, according to some of the gossip she's hearing being bandied about around her. A Weyr in chaos smelled like a golden opportunity that she was loathing to put down... = = = Of course, the bar was too crowded for Bareta to notice that one sole patron in the room had eyes only for her and no one else. She was tall, black-leathered, and missing any sort of shoulderknot on her shoulder. Jo can hear the same gossip talk that Bareta could, for it was happening on her side of the bar, too. With the way the brunette was pretending not to listen at the counter, the bluerider can tell that she was sniffing the air for that scent of opportunity. She thinks about engaging her - even expecting Kinervus to walk in any second - but chooses instead to stay at the table in the far corner, downing her beer and watching. Save for the fact that the crotchety woman looked older, Bareta still looks the same to her. She was better dressed and she had cut her hair short to her shoulders. Jo suspects she and Kin have been doing quite well in Telgar for the last turn. Inwardly glad that her tips from Kimren had paid off as to their current whereabouts, the ex-con leans forward toward the portly man sitting right infront of her at her table and nods toward the woman in question. "Y'know what to do." It's not a question. Brumis glances over his shoulder at Bareta as he pats his chest where his payment rests within his brown coat. "How you know it'll work?" he chooses to ask right then as he looks to the bluerider and gets to his feet. "Because I know her." Jo reaches into her jacket and pulls out a neatly wrapped little parcel and sets it on the table. Meeting his gaze, "This is yers if ya do a good job," she promises with that little smile of hers, it not reaching her eyes. Her hand stays on the package, indicating that it wasn't his until then. Then Jo sits back more comfortably and watches. = = = "One beer," Brumis reaches the counter by then, squeezing in to settle next to a lingering Bareta. As the bar tender moves on with his order, he does a double-take upon seeing the brunette, letting his gaze flow over her as if this was the first time he's ever seen her. "Busy night, eh gorgeous?" "Fuck off." Bareta doesn't even spare him a look. "Ehh, now! I'm just makin' nice atcha!" Brumis lifts both hands, showing his harmlessness. "I don't mean no harm. I see you here, all by your lonesome-" She cuts him off. "How do you know that I'm by my lonesome?" Now she looks at him, the beer going to her mouth. Shrugging, "Educated guess, sweetness," he drawls, reaching to take up his beer as it arrives and briefly lifting it her way. "Every lady in here seems to be having a blast, 'cept for you." Bareta grunts and looks away. Brumis watches her for a moment as he nurses his beer, leaning up against the counter. The talk around them was about the Weyrs - Telgar's and then the High Reaches with their mock threadfalls. Whistling, "Pretty amazing what's been happening the Reaches way, eh?" picks out, watching her. "I suppose." "You know, I've spent the last few months at that Weyr, and boy, let me tell you! The leadership is so jacked up there...I mean, a female brownrider for a Weyrleader! And folks ain' liking it one bit. Not one single mark bit." Shaking his head, knowing full well that he has her attention even though she's appearing as if she doesn't, "Never seen a Weyr so...unstable, you know? They oughta be careful...making themselves look particular weak to some...outsiders..." When Brumis next looks her way, he finds Bareta looking straight at him now. "Oh yeah?" she gives as casually and as non-commitedly as possible. Brumis smiles and leans a little more her way. "Oh yeah," he confirms with a knowing nod. "A lot more besides. It's like a Hold without a Lord Holder. And there's a lot of bad sorts out there. Oughta be careful, the Reaches." "Yeah," Bareta's quick to agree, paying full attention to him now. "Yeah, I know. It's a shame. I wasn't sure if those were rumors or...I've been thinking of checking up that way myself. To sell my wares," she tacks on quickly with a flash of a smile. "Wasn't sure if doing so would be worth the trouble." Brumis downs his beer before setting it down along with a mark bit. "It's worth it," he finishes to say, straightening up with a wink her way. "Who knows. You might make a killing up there." He steps away now, signaling an end to their brief conversation. "Well, I hope you make up that way. I hear it's quite the opportunity of sorts, for the smart ones." He can see the inspiration blossoming in Bareta's greedy gaze, and that was all the seed he needed to plant. He makes his way through the crowd and by the time he reaches Jo's table, the package is in his grasp. "Never told me your name," Brumis sends her way, pausing in his steps to pocket the package in his coat. Jo briefly looks his way as she answers a wry "Didn' give it." No thanks from her. Payment should be 'thanks' enough. Whatever he said had clearly worked, for Jo can see Bareta suddenly barreling out of the bar and into the night. She doesn't need to follow. If the bait worked, then Jo knows exactly what their next moves were going to be if Bareta has any say in it. |
