| Snowasis, High Reaches Weyr(#555RJ) The Snowasis is rarely quiet, and even then, the high-ceilinged former weyr is kept from echoing by the fantastical booths tucked into its convoluted perimeter. The secluded seating spaces have been shaped from the truncated stalagmites that escaped the smoothing of the main floor, and are both softened and separated by colorful hangings that are thick and opaque enough to make each corner its own private nook. Some of the smaller stalactites still roam the ceiling, their jagged teeth tracing a bumpy, inverted spine to the hearth. There, a thick rug with a low klah table and comfortable armchairs and couches sit, their upholstery and cushions changed sporadically to match the season: bright, light colors in the summer, fresh greens and yellows in the spring, warm autumnals in fall, and clear, rich hues for winter. Small tables litter the rest of the cavern, enough to fit up to four people each, while stools stand along the smooth wooden bar behind which is the passthrough window to the kitchen. Glass-paneled cabinetry behind the bar provides a clear view of the available liquors, the many colors reflecting the soft light of glows tucked into strategic niches around the cavern.
That is indeed the only reason to truly like fog: it covers an attack. At least this is Alida's take on things, the weyrling strolling confidently into the Snowasis...and cocking one eyebrow on high at the sheer amount of moving bodies in the place. Ahh, apparently the main reason is a Turnday party, for which the blonde could care less...unless it interferes with her drinking. Which, apparently, it *does*, given that she can hardly avoid being occasionally bumped into or brushed up against by the circulating crowd...the bluie giving stone-cold stares and even a glower to those who invade her personal bubble. And when she's *finally* made it to the damned bar itself, it's to discover that she's half-lost in the sea of others ordering or awaiting their drinks. "Fuuu..." is all the ex-guard rumbles out to herself in her irritation, then finally wedging her form bodily in between others while trying to get the 'tender's attention. Yeah, good luck. While waiting her turn, those incisive green eyes flick out, scan back and forth over the crowd to see who's who and what's up. At this point, specifics cannot be made out. "We've already talked about this. Taikrin is going to have to follow them around herself if she wants to find out they're not actually doing latrine duty. Or whatever crazy thing it was she was demanding. I'm not doing it, they've got dawn sweeps until the end of time. They've got shitty duty rotations. Anything else is overkill." Z'ian is shaking his head, lips pursed as he recieves his drink from the bartender. "I'm not destroying their morale. It doesn't fit." Boreal's wingsecond, known as Oisa to anyone familiar with her shakes her hand sighs. Clearly she disagrees. In the push of bodies she bumps into Alida, tossing a glance over her shoulder and issuing a brief apology before turning back to him. "You're risking your position if this goes wrong somehow and she finds out. You'd heard what's going on with Iceberg, she's more paranoid than ever before." Well now, *this* is reason for Alida not to do more than give a brief stare and grunt to Oisa: there's juicy information being disseminated that might someday concern her. Actually, it already does, and so the blonde lets the greenie's intrusion on her space pass without her growing more irritated than she already is, the guard's keen senses filtering out many other loud conversations in order to keep her informed of what takes place between the unknown Oisa and... Well now, it looks like a Z'ian nearby. So focused, in fact, is the weyrling that she almost misses the bartender inquiring after her pleasure. A light tug of the 'ling's shirt at elbow sends her gaze and head flicking, turning about suddenly so that 'lida can order a loud, "Tall pint uv' yer best beer." Guess she's been saving what little coin a weyrling gets. And then it's back to listening and rarely glancing at those two talkers beside her... the blonde keeping as bored-faced and schtum as she can. "I think she has bigger problems than me. Like Iceberg. Like her Weyrwoman turning out to be a Vijay. K'del always looming in the background." Z'ian has some entertaining hand gestures to go along with those things. But they're best left undescribed, really. "If we can keep this quiet we can fly under her wings and come out on the other side without being too banged up." The wingleader is an eternal optimist, it would seem. He takes a long draw from his beer, silent as Oisa begins to respond. "Oh and I suppose you haven't heard the whispers? They're not just saying replace Taikrin with K'del, but they're back to bringing up B'sil again. And now thanks to Lia, others outside our wing are bringing up you. What do you expect do about that Z'ian? You think disregarding her demands is the best route?" Somewhere in there, the bronzerider's eyes drift over her shoulder and notice Alida there. But they're not so well known to each other that he immediately jumps to greet her, just a realization that she's there. No-no. Pay no attention to the weyrling sitting quietly behind Oisa. No weyrling here, no ex-guard here, either. From beneath the ample cover of thickly and long-lashed greens, the young woman notes the various expressions and bodily attitudes of her barmates while awaiting her beer. Let your ears do the walking, so-to-speak, to make up for the only-occasional eye contact, which is much riskier. As such, the palest-blonde almost misses Z'ian's gaze drifting back to take note of her presence, 'lida seeing such only out of the corner of her eyes. Hmm...let's play pretend... Pretend she didn't see his eyes. Ah, and finally that big-ass beer comes, and gives the guard reason to continue to play make-believe, almost all of her visual concentration offered to the 'tender so that she might be able to give him the proper coin to pay for her indulgence. Z'ian sighs and lifts the beer to his mouth again, taking another swallow. This is going to be a long night. "I can't control what people outside of Boreal are saying about me. I have no ability to stop them if they want to say things, suggest anything. I can only focus on us." His mug finds placement on the counter of the bar. "If we come down with an ironfist on our own riders, what good will that do? Then the next time they want to resist, it won't be a passive sit down in the living cavern. It'll be an all out fight. They'll remember who put them down. I won't put them down, I won't be that person." Oisa pushes her hip into the bar, shifting over and giving the bronzerider another clear shot at Alida. His eyebrows furrow, but he's distracted by the wingsecond. "No, you'll be the person who allowed them to persist. They'll see you as their beacon of reason, someone to champion their cause. And when Taikrin comes down on everyone who opposes her, and you know she will, you'll go down too. We'll all go down." It occurs to Alida to perhaps put in her thirty-second's worth the the conversation taking place just to her side, but then common sense kicks in, and keeps the blonde silent. Nope, not looking, nope-nope...just sipping at her big-ass beer with a small smile of appreciation and enjoyment, though whether it's for the taste of the stuff or the conversations she's overhearing remains unknown. What a lovely evening it's suddenly turned out to be for the weyrling, what with Ilicaeth all oiled up, fed, and snoozing, plus her own full tummy and a good beer in her hand. The juicy information at hand is the icing on the cake. Vienne wanders in, looking vaguely out of place as she tends to, being so small and chronically more nicely dressed than is really necessary. Her hair is pulled back from her face and her tan wool coat is unbuttoned as she heads for the bar with her heeled shoes adding just a smidge more height. Z'ian is easy to pick out among those at the bar and she lifts her chin to him, a pleasant smile forming before she realizes Oisa is there as well. It's not that it changes that smile, exactly, but rather it keeps it from changing, no brighter grin for her more familiar Wingleader with the less familiar Wingsecond also in attendence. She likely sees Alida's extremely blonde head, but it can't be said that she really notices her yet. Instead she's focused on trying to catch the bartender's attention. There's something about Alida that really has his attention now, though it's difficult to determine just from his face what it is. What's really captured his eye and has him looking critcally at her like that. Even if she's not directly watching, she'll feel his stare. For as long as it lasts until he has to actually answer Oisa again. "Look. We come down on them hard, we risk a revolt in our own wing, we risk them revolting with the other wings." Vienne enters and he's distracted, waving to her. Waving her over to them. Continuing, "We tread lightly and patiently with the situation, than maybe when it all goes to hell, we won't spiral out with them. At least not as badly. I get what you're saying, I just don't agree. There's a risk in everything taken. This is mine." The greenrider levels Z'ian with a heavy look and exhales slowly. "You're going to give the wrong impression. Don't say I didn't tell you so when this turns out all wrong." There's a grim weight to her tone and she drains her beer, pushing off the bar and leaving. Her farewell is a short wave of her fingers over her shoulder and brisk nod to the bluerider as she passes her. Given that it took about 5 minutes for Alida to be able to get her own drink in this vocal and prodigious crowd... good luck for Vienne. With the entrance of more folks comes Alida's nearly-always astute recognition of such, the blue-eyed short chick soon enough placed by the weyrling's green eyes as she continues to sip her beer. Yes indeed, the alert bluie does indeed feel Z'ian's stare on her, but she refuses to answer such until it becomes necessary...like when the departing Oisa nods to her, thus calling up an answering and polite nod back to the wingsecond. Former word of risks taken is reason for the ex-guard to purse her lips just a little, then hiding them behind her next draught. The nature of Z'ian's conversation sinks in on Vienne rather quickly, drawing her shoulders tense as she waits nearby to place her order, waved close as she has been by the bronzerider. Rather than look aside at the two leaders engaged in their rather weighty debate, the bluerider's eyes scan around to take note of who might be paying attention more attention than they need to, which is when she does notice the blonde weyrling. As the 'discussion' breaks up and Oisa goes striding away, Vienne tries again to share a pleasant smile with her, but as soon as she's gone, she turns to Z'ian. "Here?" she asks him rather sadly. Lifting his mug and draining it of the beer, he signals to the bartender for another one. While he waits, he levels Alida with scrutinizing gaze. But he doesn't say anything just yet. Oisa makes her exit and then Vienne is there, a much better replacement. "Here." Z'ian confirms grimly and just shrugs his shoulders. "It's been too packed and loud for most people to really hear or pay attention. You know, if we exclude the casually eavesdropping weyrling right there." And at this point he tips his chin in the direction of the other woman. The smile he has is wry and not necessarily amused. "It helps to not stare at the beginning and then smile strangely to yourself in the meantime, darling." Ah, pleasantries. Alida's not good at them, but she's at least passable, and so Vienne gets a polite nod in return. The blonde doesn't *obviously* look like she's listening in, her body language and expression neutral as she drinks, her form even canted slightly away from Z'ian and the now-departed Oisa. Maybe it's just the leftover intensity within her clear green eyes, or perhaps the aura of focus that lingers about her, even as the weyrling flicks her gaze out to the partiers beyond the bar as they suddenly cheer the Turnday rider. A small smirk for the loud louts drains into a decidedly less-pleased expression when the bronzerider calls her out, though the blonde's instantly schooling herself to blandness once more as she slowly turns to face Z'ian. "Who's smiling strangely?" is inquired, the bluie then noting in offhanded fashion to the Wingleader, "I'd greet ya' with your proper nickname, but I have a feeling Quinlys would...disapprove." Ahh, *there's* that small smirk. "She did indeed." And since Alida has heard pretty much the entire conversation already, he doesn't seemed bothered repeating the cause of it to Vienne here. "She thinks I should have come down on the riders as hard as Taikrin demanded. Accused me of setting myself up for a fall in the future or some other crap." Z'ian waves his hand briefly, not particularly buying into that theory so much. His beer arrives and he takes a swallow from it, glancing behind to the cheering peole. Back to the weyrling once more he lifts one eyebrow. "Good decision." His blue eyes flicker over to Vienne and he leans back in his seat, seemingly interested in hearing the answer. A sip of beer serves to give Alida time to think about that inquiry from Vienne, as well as whet her whistle, clear and intense greens taking in how both her fellow bluie and the brozer act, respond to the situation. A quirk of her palest head precedes a thoughtful alto, "Does anyone care about what a mere weyrling thinks?" As for Z'ian, why, his rejoinder to her words of Quinlys earns him a quick, though bright grin which flashes even, white teeth...which surely should have been knocked out way before now, given Alida's rather grating habits. Sip. Vienne doesn't appear to be convinced by this account of Oisa's arguments, but then the source might not have any particular reason to sell it. She presses her lips together and gives a small shake of her head, but doesn't seem ready to weigh in on it herself. Instead, she mostly waits for Alida to speak -- though in the middle she does snag the bartender's attention while he's delivering Z'ian's beer, placing her own order. When the weyrling's comment comes, Vienne's reply is, "I asked. I'm curious to know what you think." Easy as that. As a seat opens up on the far side of the bronzerider, Vienne gestures toward it for her Wingleader, "Could you..." Snag that stool and pull it around so that she doesn't have to try to look through the much larger man in order to see the young blonde they're currently speaking with. Really, her gesture says all of that. Or maybe it asks him to move down. Either way, Z'ian, get the stool. Z'ian's foot comes to rest on the bar that runs underneath the counter while he awaits the weyrling's reply to Vienne. But apparently it's just a question in response to a question. And since no one is talking to him in anything other than eye gestures and and grins with teeth, the bronzerider remains largely silent. He gets that thing about the stool though. He lifts his foot from its resting spot and pushes his chair towards the newest Boreal wingrider, taking the one she indicated instead. Snatching his beer up from the counter, he draws the new seat closer so that he can listen to see if the query is answered this time. Time to drink. Drink. She's leaning lightly against the side of the bar, Alida watching and listening to the senior riders, watching them, occasionally glancing around to keep herself appraised. And while Z'ian's fetching himself a stool, the weyrling notes just loud enough to be heard in their tight little group, "I think this Weyr's gonna get really ugly ta' live at if equitable solutions don't get implemented sooner, rather than later." Green eyes first level seriously upon Vienne then the bronzerider, though the woman's words sound almost darkly humored, in places. "Equitable solutions?" Vienne repeats, as if the notion is unexpected, which wouldn't make much sense at all. "What do you think they'd be? I mean, do you have any thoughts on it? Impulses? Something that you, personally, would like to see?" She turns back to Z'ian to shoot him a quick look Alida can't see, but after that she has to take a pause from both of them so she can smile her thanks to the bartender and pay for the drink he's delivered. It's something amber with ice and a stirring stick. Z'ian looks between the weyrling and then the bluerider, taking a long draw from his mug as he listens in to the exchange. It's time for him to be an eavesdropper now! Even if this technically doesn't count. His eyebrows draw together at Alida's words and he glances over to Vienne, watching to see them register on her face. What he gets out of her look isn't exactly easy to determine, his expression is neutral now. "What do you make of the rumors that are circulating about the wings, impending doom or no?" He asks, a small smile playing on his lips at the word 'doom'. "I dunno' the people an' the history here well enough t'venture a sound opinion..." Alida clips off to Vienne, then lifting her big glass to lips for another drink of beer. However, she does list off some specifics with clear, if low-voiced precision. "Division fer any reason sucks. Tradition *and* innovation have their own strong 'n weak points. And apparently..." cue a black little smirk-smile and a sip of brew "...someone who's likely an insider wants things stirred up ta' further their own agenda." A flickered look between the pair of riders allows the blonde a moment to think and drink, her lips finally moving with words of, "Personally? I'd enjoy seeing Weyrleadership opened up to whatever competent rider would be willing ta' fill the position, regardless uv' their gender of their dragon's color. A fuck-up's a fuck-up, even if they're astoundingly male and they ride a bronze." Sip. "Y'don't want someone totally incapable - nor utterly ruthless - as a leader." There you have it, Vienne. A glance over to Z'ian once again for his own inquiry presages the weyrling's sall furrow of brow, then her laconic, "Doom's in the eye uv' the beholder most uv the time." A faint quirk of her lips is all for the bronzerider's similar expression. "You make the wrong move too soon 'r too late, yer ass'll be handed to ya' on a platter. Same with Taikrin, Azaylia, Aishani...anyone else pullin' the strings." A small draw of a pink tonguetip over her lower lip shift into a brisk, "Of course, if you people just let shit evolve on it's own..." And there's her shrug again, followed by a twistly little moue of lips. As Alida begins, Vienne settles in a bit, an elbow on the bar, her drink her hands and her stirring stick going round and round the bobble of ice. It's a good thing she makes herself comfortable, because who knew the weyrling would have so much to say! Vienne listens to all of it attentively, nodding for the balance Alida maintains through nearly all of her points. "Do you feel like those are the choices? Totally incapable or utterly ruthless?" Surely she has other questions, but that's the one she starts with. "You people?" Z'ian counters, one eyebrow lifting with something of dry amusement coloring his tone. "What is it you think that you people should exactly do that would stop the shit from evolving into something that most people would categorize as doom worthy?" The wingleader leans back in his chair again, beer held close to his chest as he takes another long drink from the mug. His eyes slide Vienne's way and he rakes one hand through his hair, nodding along with her questions and then turning attention to the weyrling again. "Those're two extremes." The look the weyrling gives her fellow bluie hints that she should've known that. Still, "There's *always* alternative choices. Just depends on how desperate people are, how far they're willing ta go," Alida notes to Vienne, her greens looking directly into the other woman's blue. "I'd say that balance is the point ta look for in any situation... but it's also the toughest thing t'negotiate." More beer clears the blonde's throat some, her greens then attaching themselves to Z'ian, waiting until he's done to clarify. "You folk at the top of the feeding chain at the Weyr." A finger is held up to pause him in case of instant reply, 'lida then clipping off, "No matter how much a Weyr - or any other system - says that it's geared to bein' equal amongst its members, there's *always* gonna be people in charge that pull lots uv influence." Her look almost dares Z'ian to deny such. "The leaders get their undies in a bundle, so do their followers. It feeds off itself." Shrug. "Yer lookin' at the wrong person for answers, Wingleader. I just got here, as far as I'm concerned. Still workin' on getting the lay uv' th' land... *plus* raising a babe on my own." Smirk. "Mm," Vienne replies in understanding. "I just feel like I've heard people use those extremes as descriptions lately so..." There's innocent apology in her smile, in the shrug of little shoulders inside her jacket. She sips at her drink, holding the stick carefully aside so she doesn't jab herself in the face with it, and her eyes slip toward Z'ian as Alida continues on to mention the top of the food chain. "Weyrs have always adhered to a chain of comand," she floats out, not really addressing the weyrling's comments so much as letting them direct her musing. "*You* have. *I've* been holed up in the barracks fer most uv' the last two months, tendin' to a headstrong brick uv' a blue." Though she's eyerolling and giving her usual half-smirk, Alida doesn't upset as having Impressed. Well, not *much*, anyway, and her swift, easy rejoinder to Vienne is eased by more beer swallowing. "Yep; chain uv command's essential for any fighting force." There's a small emphasis on the word 'fighting.' Z'ian takes a breath and exhales it slowly before taking another long swallow from that beer in his hands. It's about halfway gone through right about now. He listens to Alida without bothering to interrupt. He also doesn't argue with her, but he's not speaking anything that confirms what she's saying is right either. "I'm not looking for answers, exactly. Just helpful to hear what the future of our weyr has to say." He smiles then, one of his typically easy ones as he brings the mug to his mouth again. "A chain of command that's been largely determined by the dragons. Whether it's right or wrong, certain ones have a greater pull and influence than others. It seems to affect the riders as well." "*You* have. "Yep; chain uv command's essential for any fighting force." There's a small emphasis on the word 'fighting.' For Z'ian, well, another small lip twist is given - some smouldering hints of ire and tiredness seen just behind the weyrling's eyes as she listens, then answers. "If one goes strictly by chain uv command, Tradition, then *this* particular 'future of the Weyr' has little t'nothing in the way uv input 'r pull, unless she makes at least Wingleader." Snort, sip. "Well, unless folks stop ta think that it's mostly greens 'n blues that make UP a Weyr in the first place." There's a slender snippet of a fox's smile for that fact. "Yes, that's what I said," Vienne confirms with a light chuckle when Alida busts out some strong emphasis for what one of them has heard versus what the other has. She quiets after that, though, to let Z'ian add his comments. She nods quickly for the point about it being helpful to hear and again for his explanation about dragons effecting the chain of command. "I know it probably seems excessive now, and unfair, but during a Pass, and during weyrling training, not second guessing your leader can save your life. I don't think the Weyr requires blind obedience in all things, but I do think it's important to know when to listen." She sips her drink again and then her head tips to one side. "Are you anxious about training?" she wonders of the girl as if that's what they've been talking about all along. "What I just said wasn't strictly about tradition." Z'ian looks at the blue weyrling as if she hasn't been quite listening to him or isn't understanding, maybe. Said in a way that's not unkind, simply explaining: "If Tsanth decides to lean his weight into Oswinth's mind, his thoughts? It'll be significantly different than if we switched the two dragons. The golds are even stronger than that. Part of that is why people are having trouble accepting a brownriding Weyrleader. It's not all black and white, but the biology of it can't be ignored for the sake of breaking tradition for some possibly better way." Z'ian drains the rest of his beer then, sliding the mug over onto the counter. He reaches into his pocket and begins to dig around for some marks, then counting them in his hand. While doing that, he glances over to Vienne and nods his head. With a wry grin, "In short, whatever she just said too." She doesn't *say* it, of course, but the mix of some expression and body language about Alida might snarkily 'say' to Vienne, 'fuck off.' And when she gets her temper back under control with a long draught of beer... "Yer preachin' to the choir, hon. I've lived, breathed, eaten, an' crapped chain uv command for Turns." An errant flick of fingers apparently consigns that particualr track of converation to the rubbish bin. As to Vienne's next inquiry, well, the weyrling only arches one brow slightly, then smiles quietly, shaking her head a few times and chortling darkly to herself. "Try fishin' at some other weyrling's expense." And then Z'ian's attended to by keen senses, the blonde still holding up the bar at one side while watching the bronzerider. "Mhm, I'm finally figuring out that draconic biological imperative thing. Merits thought." Beat. "However, *humans* aren't at the whim uv such biology anymore...well, unless we wanna be." Twinkle. "Dragon's're smart enough to listen to their riders, 'n other more ranking dragons uv any color, if there's enough willpower behind an order. A *sensible* order." Wink. "Ever heard uv' those ninth Pass Benden weyrleaders?" is noted of the man's word of breaking tradition. As much as Z'ian might only be talking in hypotheticals, there is a faint straighting of Vienne's already prim posture at the picture he paints. But she listens carefully as he talks, only to listen a good deal more carefully when Alida does, her eyes keen on all that body language. "I question if that's true," Vienne remarks to Alida's life in the chain. "Or rather, I question that you have much experience adhering to it." She smiles warmly, a faint if bright laugh escaping on a breath. And with a rather wistful sigh she looks aside to Z'ian as she slips off her chair to stand, "If only it were all that simple." And to Alida, "The old stories love to tell of people who succeeded by willpower alone. I think, however, the truth is that there is rarely someone who accomplishes great things without the help of the people around them. It's important to know who is friend and who is foe." "Taikrin is only the Weyrleader right now because the two golds have both put their combined weight behind Szadath." Think on that, his expression seems to say. Z'ian pays the bartender, tips as well and slips out of his chair. He can only look on to Vienne as she makes her own round of commentary, his expression is approving even if there's a certain tight and drawn look to his face. "If you're leaving, I'll walk you out to Oswinth? Tell him we would never really do something like that to him, not like that anyway." The mental lean, nothing more than what occurs naturally. As he's shrugging his jacket back on, "And girl, finish that beer and get your ass back to the barracks. I'm pretty certain this isn't exactly what Quinlys means by a drink after dinner." Hanging out in the bar, a tall pint of beer, eavesdropping. Etc... But he's not actually going to check to see that she does any of that. Maybe he just has to say it. If Vienne is amiable, he'll leave with her. "You've that perrogative..." Alida drawls back to Vienne about her questioning of the blonde's adherence to the rules, the weyrling sipping her beer and quietly grinning back before continuing, "Just as much as I have mine in wonderin' how unsatisfied you are right now that I'm not takin' yer bait." Unspoken: bitch. "Really?" is inquired lightly of Vienne. "Look at Aishani." Twinkle, sip. Another careless-seeming flick of fingers presages the bluie's alto, "I think that a mix uv willpower and some competent help behind one is likely the best scenario. So, since Aishani's got the will, 'n the other side's got more numbers..." Another grin and fingersplay on the air by her free hand perhaps speaks volumes. Apparently the young woman might have gotten to Z'ian in some way (or maybe his current situation has), for he's apparently rounding on her in indirect fashion, the male's irritated look and orders for her earning him a quick push up off the bar, and a crisp salute from Alida...who them goes back to drinking her tall one. Are her green eyes laughing? Once the pair of full riders are well and indeed gone, Alida settles back to the bar again, allowing herself a glower, as well as the muttered words, "Refrain from callin' you a c&nt..." down to her beer. But she indeed stays around to finish her draught, though in a decidedly less pleasant mood, until the tankard's gone and it's time to go check up on Ilicaeth. |

Oooh. I really enjoyed Z'ian talking to his wingsecond. It kind of just makes his following decisions feel more real, and thought out.
As for the end... boy.
