There were Vijays that still had issues with dragons, even this many turns later. They were older than Aishani for the most part, old enough to have vivid, visceral memories of being chased down, being raided and captured by High Reaches' dragons, her queen. But most of the younger ones were interested, some fascinated... Jyani the most, likely. Not because there was just any old dragon sitting outside the camp... because it was Iesaryth and she chose Shani, and that made her that much better. Because Iesaryth was brilliant and beautiful and kept her cousin's secrets, and therefore had to be the best queen, the best dragon in the world.

Also, Iesaryth didn't mind her hanging around while Shani talked to their uncles and aunts (and Jyani's mother, yes) and letting Jyani ask a bunch of questions that she couldn't really answer very well. The queen wasn't bad at answering things that required a yes/no response, which made Jyani feel pleased, like she was paying attention even though the subjects weren't all that important. Shani said Iesaryth could pay attention to about a hundred things at once, but Jyani wasn't so sure about that - it sounded kind of crazy. But it was nice to have someone to talk to, and the gold never made her feel like she was impatient with a kid going on about her kid-problems to her, so she liked that too.

She was still awfully big, though.

It was a good way to spend the time waiting, but when Shani came down the path from the camp, Jyani still jumped up to run her way, eager to hear her news - if there was any. It was hard to tell what was happening from the older girl's expression, but then, it always was. Since her cousin had been gone, she'd become that much more difficult to read. "What did they say?" she asked immediately, breathless and bouncing, dark eyes hopeful.

Aishani didn't look entirely thrilled, with a wry purse of lips for her younger cousin, wary. "They said you can go. But--!" She had to raise her voice as Jyani was near-ready to dart off to pack her things. "But, not right now. I'll come get you at Turnover."

Jyani felt herself droop in disappointment, felt annoyance at Shani's amusement in her brightening eyes, the quirk of her mouth. She could think it was funny. Things were getting better at the camp, but it was still... not the Weyr. "But why?" she asked, whined really. She didn't even care. "It's forever away."

"It's a month, and I'm busy. Things keep fucking up, and it takes time to deal with them. It'll work better that way, I'll have more time. Trust me." Shani sounded sincere and maybe a little apologetic, but her tone was firm. It was the same tone her mother got, her uncle even (though telling Shani that was probably not the best plan). No arguing.

Jyani eyed her cousin dubiously, folding her arms. It lost some of its effect because she had to look so far up. Her mother kept saying she'd probably shoot up like the rest of the girls sometime in the next couple of turns, but that seemed about as far off as the month away. But what could she do about either? She looked over to Iesaryth hoping for backup, but the gold just let out a soft sighing breath - not a good sign. Reluctantly, "Okay."

Putting an arm around the younger girl as she started back to her dragon, Shani told Jyani, "Don't look so down. It'll be over faster than you think, then we'll come get you on the way home. I'll make sure everything is set up for you, and you'll have lots to do. I promise."

Jyani nodded as she walked along, still unhappy on the surface, but excitement beginning to grow deep inside. She was still going. Regardless of when, or how, she was leaving. "All right."

Aishani bent to kiss the top of the girl's head and hug her close and tight. "Run back, they're going to start dinner soon. I'll see you before you know it." And before Jyani could even really get a look at her to say goodbye, Shani'd already spun her around by the shoulders and pushed her back toward the camp. In the time it took her to turn and look, her cousin was already striding back to her gold.

Jyani just shook her head as she watched, smirking a little. Pointedly, she yelled, "Bye!" And slipped off back to the camp. She could already smell the smoke rising from the cookfire.
