Cothold, Tillek Area(#1636R) Tucked up into the cliffs above a small fishing hold, this cothold commands a breathtaking view of the ocean and not much else. The winds can whip fiercely here in the winter, lashing the ground and twisting trees into strange shapes. Still, a swathe of green grass stretches around the cottage itself, sturdy stone walls and hammered metal roof standing up against the test of time. Available Commands: +tp/help

It's the end of the world. Okay not really. But given where they're taking a quick break, it might as well be. Z'ian and E'sren have taken a pause from the regular sweeps that Boreal is flying over the immediate area to stop down and visit this particular cothold. The older man that lives here hasn't been out as much recently and well, after awhile you begin to learn the habits of certain holders. This one is fine though, battling some upper respiratory infection while his grandaughter looks after him. She appreciates their interest in his health so much that produces a quick lunch (just some cheese sandwiches, don't get too excited) and a couple of mugs of ale for them to enjoy. There's a rickety table set up away from the cothold and it's there now that they eat their food and talk.

If E'sren shows an over-amount of concern for the sick man inside the cottage, don't worry, he's new here. Only too happy to stick around too, after he's realized there's someone that needs a little help inside, he's eating his sandwich slowly, holding it in one hand and the mug of ale in the other. After swallowing he asks another question. "So do we bring him medicine or do we leave him here? Are we gonna help him at all?" He's been on this vein for the past few minutes.

If Z'ian seems annoyed by the way that E'sren has locked onto the topic of the older cotholder, he doesn't show it. He's been patiently fielding the questions the entire time. "We're going to leave him be for now. He's not alone here. He has her and she does seem to have the situation under control." Chewing on his sandwich he waits for the next query, "We'll check on him again in a few days. If he seems to be worse at all we can offer to bring a healer in. It won't really do much good for us to load him on a dragon and between him somewhere. That's not great for a cold and it wouldn't help to fly him long anywhere, it's getting chilly."

And really, Z'ian's the best person for E'sren to be with when this is happening. He takes in that information quietly, nods at the end and takes another bite, another sip. "Makes sense." Seems legit. And now that he's been quelled about that particular subject, he hesitates before bringing up the next, and it's not with any kind of practiced air at all. He's new to these things. He watches the older man for a long moment, his brow furrowed, and opens his mouth prematurely, nothing happens. Then, "So... what's going on with everything?" Not totally subtle. "I mean back home. Ahruth told me about the dragons."

Z'ian is looking over in the direction of the cliff, eating his sandwich. He seems more at ease in this place than he has the last few sevens. But then sweeps a relatively stress free business. The question doesn't quite catch him off-guard, but he does suck his breath in. His smile is quick to come, crooked as he looks in E'sren's direction. "It's... stable. As stable as it's going to get with what's been happening. The Weyr won't burn down tomorrow." It's the best reassurance that he can give him in those respects. "What have you heard?"

And really, what with all the questions E'sren's been asking at all of those wingleader meetings, and all the times Z'ian's had to stop on his way out to answer them because he's the only rider E'sren will go to (the only one who isn't hungover or too busy bickering with everyone else), understandably there's a familiarity here in the way he puts these questions to the bronzerider. He accepts this answer easily enough, dark eyes lowered, with another nod. His answer is just as easy, coupled with a shrug. "Just what he told me he heard. That High Reaches had a false queen. That Aishani had something to do with it. I don't know anything about that stuff, we're not used to caring about what the Weyr does."

He is used to the seemingly endless questions put to him by the young bluerider, enough so that he largely answers them automatically when he's on sweep duty with him and Boreal. The ones after the meetings are met with a certain amount of tact, but honesty. His response has Z'ian scratching at the scruff on his chin, expressing considering. "It's true. Iolene managed to fake her flight with the help of Aishani's Iesaryth. They were very clever about it and fooled everyone. It's a staggering truth to find out, that dragons could... perpetuate falsehood. But there it is." He exhales slowly. "What do you think has changed that you pay attention now?"

"I'm not sure." But E'sren's going to take a second to try to find out, which he spends taking another slow bite out of his sandwich. After chewing a little, he comes up with something. "I think it's Ahruth, you know? He's mine. He's family. He made me a part of this place, he made it my home, and I was raised to protect what's mine. I wasn't here when all that stuff was happening but I am now." Somewhere in there he swallows, and then takes a drink. "I just want to know what's going on. I mean how were they able to do that? Is it gonna happen again? Are we okay?"

"I wish Tsanth had such an immediate affect on me." Z'ian replies ruefully to the younger man. He pops the last bite of the sandwich into his mouth and links his fingers behind his head. "But a lot of riders do have that happen to them. I suppose it's natural." The answer he formulates for E'sren is careful, thoughtful as he thinks it over. "She. Iolene took advantage of K'del, somehow. She was the one who was really behind everything, with her gold. They tricked Cadejoth and him when they were alone together. When they got back to the Weyr, Iesaryth was used to put her additional influence onto the dragons there." He shrugs his shoulders apologetically. "I wish I had a better explanation. But I had no idea it was happening myself. I don't think it's something we have to worry about again. And the Weyr is going to go on, somehow. For better or worse." He's once again watching the bluerider.

For better or for worse. It's because E'sren is still so out of his element in all of this Weyr business that he has to really listen to Z'ian, watch him while he explains and answers, while the gears in his own mind churn out understanding. Afterwards, he's not quick to respond, again needing a moment to think. Not too long though. "Okay so they tricked everyone. I get that. I mean I don't get that, but I get now how that even happened. But I guess, I mean... that stuff with us having to go get that tithe, why was it us? And what if we didn't go?" He glances at the cottage for whatever reason on that note. "I thought we were supposed to help people."

"Chalk it up to stupid gold mind tricks." Z'ian responds wryly, exhaling again and blowing a bit of hair out of his face. "Two golds forced about four wings worth of riders onto their dragons and between over Crom recently. If they can do that to people that are actively resisting, imagine what sort of subtle shit they could pull when we didn't know enough to push back?" He shrugs his shoulders then, moving on to the next topic. "Tillek was trying to make a point to Aishani and Taikrin, Azaylia too. I won't go so far as to guess what exactly they talked about when they went to see Lady Edeline. But they asked for Boreal because she wanted to put it on me, a bronzerider. One that's not offensive in some way, yet. Probably, that's my thoughts. How true they are?" He can't be sure. "They would have stayed over night anyway. And hopefully our goldriders would have convinced Edeline to release the tithes regardless." Glancing out of the corner of his eyes to the cottage as well. "We are. But intervals make people forget what's important."

If E'sren knew the specifics of what happened with the mock threadfalls over the Holds or if he didn't, he doesn't comment either way so it's impossible to know. It wasn't exactly a secret thing though. "All sorts of subtle shit," he replies, serious despite the words themselves. "That makes me worry too. I mean this whole thing is insane. And I don't know what to think or do. We're gonna be full riders soon enough, then what? I don't want Ahruth being forced to do anything, if something ever happened to him..." But he doesn't finish that, leaving it up to imagination; not hard to imagine, either. He goes quiet then, gives the bronzerider a long look. "I've never been in something like this before," he admits.

"I don't have all of the answers for this." Z'ian admits, looking maybe a touch helpless as he listens to the struggles of the younger rider. "I think that it's important that people know the truth. Which you know now. Take some heart in that you're not the only one that's confused, worried. You're not the only one asking questions." He takes a breath and continues, "Asking questions can be hard. But it's important that someone is. From residents, to wingriders and all the way up." His mouth forms a line briefly. "Just be ready that sometimes you won't get answers you like. They might even make things more complicated."

It might seem to be little condolence to Z'ian, but E'sren does look a little more uplifted simply by that first admission, that he doesn't have all the answers. Better that truth than something like 'wait and see what we've got in store for you!'. At first he just nods, a little concerned still obviously, but getting there. "I'd rather get answers at all. That's why I always come to you, you answer my questions. You don't... brush me off. I think a lot of the other wingleaders wish we'd just go away and stop asking." If the other weyrlings even ask at all. He thinks on everything and suddenly lifts a hand to scrub his face. "I need to figure some stuff out." And then, with another look, "How do you feel about everything?"

We're going to get you a pony! Wait- Sorry, not really. More chaos instead! Nope, Z'ian doesn't bother making any false promises to the weyrling in front of him. "I think the other wingleaders are distracted by everything that's going on. Some are full up on themselves from Taikrin's preference and the others are afraid to lose knots they've earned over turns and turns of service. It's complicated." He sounds apologetic for that truth. As for the question that E'sren directs towards him he gives a short laugh and shakes his head. "Confused as fuck. But what are we going to do other than move forward?"

That's fair. "Makes sense," E'sren accedes, taking another drink right after. There's a little sandwich left but he doesn't seem to have the appetite for it anymore. "I mean I don't wanna lose mine, even if it doesn't mean a lot to a lot of people." With its silver thread and all, and he looks down to reflect on that, fingers the knot on his shoulder. When the wingleader laughs he refocuses and lifts his eyebrows, the corners of his mouth tugging up reflexively. Soon he's grinning. "Good point." Apparently that was as good a place as any for his litany of questions to end, and instead he turns what's left of their conversation, as they begin to clean up and clear out, towards friendly things, male bonding things. Later, when they mount the dragons, he casts another glance back at the cottage before urging Ahruth to follow Tsanth's lead up.

Aw man. Blunt honesty at last. Z'ian's the man to go to, especially for someone like E'sren. I like the way you guys alluded to their relationship before this scene- about how E'sren always comes to Z with questions. I really dig their back and forth. :3

I really enjoyed this! I love getting to see riders do what they do - we don't often actually PLAY sweeps and so on, so even having it alluded to is awesome. And, of course, all the plot talk. Rad.
