She had done her very best not to make a fuss or cry out too often, less concerned about her dignity and more about the worry she would cause Elaruth, N'muir and Bijedth, all of whom had stayed near, the bronze's hum weaving a counterpoint to her queen's lighter croons. Maybe some apologies would have to be made later, for what she hadn't allowed herself to vent through inarticulate exclamations, she had instead put into all too cutting words on occasion, delivered to fussing healers that she knew were only trying to help and were rightly concerned, yet made her feel trapped and claustrophobic. If it hadn't been for N'muir, who had looked worse than she had at some points, she was sure she would have completely lost her temper and let her fears consume her.

Hattie settled herself more snugly against the amassed pillows, Harriet a warm and comforting weight against her chest. She was tiny, true, but she would fight. There was too much stubbornness and determination in her blood for anything else. No matter what happened or what was needed in the days to come, she was not going to be parted from her. She would get back on her feet and work, but she would not surrender the child she'd surrendered her knot for.

...Despite her joy in her new daughter, she couldn't eliminate the guilt; the thought that Lilah and Eliyaveith might still be here and not... wherever they were, if she had just kept going for those few more months - if she hadn't given her the knot.

« Today is a happy day, » Elaruth told her from the thermal she was coasting on, high above the Weyr. « Let it be a happy day. »

She heard the low croon from the wallow, the sound signalling Bijedth's agreement. He had been there for hours, both comfort and guard, warding off any visitors until she felt she was composed enough to handle them - and ready to share her daughter.

Hattie looked down at her sleeping child and let the besotted smile she'd been sporting too often since her birth claim her features again. Briallan would probably tease her about the name they'd given her, but it felt... right. It needed to belong to someone who would wear it and keep it, and who would not start out as she had.

It wouldn't be long before N'muir returned and the children deemed that they had waited (im)patiently enough to see their new sibling. She wondered if C'stian would visit - he had, after all, said he wanted to know his littlest sister. She didn't want him to feel that he couldn't, or shouldn't. Securing her arms around Harriet, she rocked a little from side to side and hummed a nonsense melody to try and suppress the tears that wanted to spill free. She would not be upset or guilty or troubled. She would be pleased and proud and wilfully oblivious to being capable of anything but open adoration of her new daughter.

She would give herself the day, maybe the day after, and then face whatever she had to face.

But not yet. Tonight, she would curl up with her weyrmate, their daughter in her cradle.

For now, she was Harriet's.
