Records Room, High Reaches Weyr
Books. Scrolls. Bound hides. Maps. If it's a record pertaining to the
Weyr, it's likely to be in this roughly oval room with its
floor-to-ceiling cherrywood shelves, its multitude of slots for scrolls,
and its wide drawers for materials that shouldn't be rolled up or folded.
A scribe is usually on duty at the tall desk up front with its good view
of the room, and is able to help visitors find what they're looking for
via the big bound index on its rotating stand. Past the desk, several
tables stand in neat rows for note-taking, each stocked with glowbaskets,
scrap hide, paper and pencils. Additional lighting is provided by a
many-armed wrought-iron light fixture, its glows gleaming through
luxurious glass containers in fluted shapes instead of baskets.
To one side of the room, a gap between two sets of shelves outlines where
another set once stood, now replaced by a tapestry-covered aperture.
Peeking behind the tapestry reveals another cavern, this one likewise full
of shelves, but occupied by only a few boxes of older records and a
somewhat musty air of disuse. As well, two narrow but solid doors are
locked when the room is unattended and a discreet staircase provides
direct access from the Weyrleaders' weyrs. It's a cold night after dinner that finds Jo in the records room, settled comfortably at the edge of the table as she seems to be pouring over unrolled maps. Her black leather jacket is off and draped over the table, leaving her in her white tank and leather pants. Her trusty flask, of course, is on the table like a good companion, and her bronze fire lizard is curled up beside it and looks to be dozing off. The nice thing about flight gear? It's warm, Edyis is huddled into the jacket as she slips into the records room, stealthily. Upon spotting Jo, her path diverts tugging at the strap of the satchel over her shoulder. Dark eyes scan the maps for indicators of area and interest before, leaning in an attempt to be sneaky she tries to murmur in the bluerider's ear "I never figured you for a fan of cartography, you are a woman of fascinating and surprising talents." What Edyis would see as she looks over the area maps are areas dealing with Lemos and Tillek, and it's possible that her arrival is noted since Jo casually leans back from her study while keeping her eyes on them for the moment. Once Edyis speaks, she goes for her flask and takes a drink before answering back with, "Ya haven' seen inside my weyr, then. If my bein' here fascinates ya," and she now her dark gaze lifts to fall on the weyrling with that annoying barely-there smirk on her lips, "just imagine the view of what I've got plastered over my wall from the bed." It's delivered far too casually as she sets her flask back down. "What brings ya here, Ed?" she asks now with a slight incline of her head in greeting. "Gettin' in some studyin' before sleep?" "Could it be? You are a woman after my own heart?" She drawls amused, by the prospect of maps pinned everywhere, "Or is that your not so subtle attempt at getting me into your bed?" She straightens pulling out a chair near by, studying the bronze with a soft chuckle. "Couldn't sleep, I was going over the wingsecond packet that was left for me and trying to figure out what in all of pern our weyrlingmaster was thinking when she made me Keysi's second. Don't get me wrong Keys is made for being a wingleader. It's the other half of the combination that's a little bit weak." "I never said I was subtle 'bout any of my advances," Jo is open in admitting, that smile growing a fraction. "But I was tellin' the truth 'bout my weyr. I like maps." It seems that simple. She follows Ed's gaze towards the little fire lizard, dozing away before she explains, "That's Mime. Usually nestin' up on Tac. Guess he wanted to shadow me today. Yer wingsecond, eh?" That allows Jo to give Edyis open appraisal before she takes in the other's words with a wry, "Oh, we all had to go through with it. When it was my time, I caused a bit of ruckus in my 'methods'. As in, I saw no point in all the work if there was no Thread in the sky." She gives a small shrug to that before she asks, "But, yer more studious than I was. What's wrong with the packet?" "True you've always been honest with your lechery." She answers with an easy smile. That Jo likes maps? Well, that smile stretches into a grin. "Not so much the work I mind, more I'm not sure what she was thinking appointing someone whose so behind with other things over something that requires this much focus. At least she didn't make me wing leader I guess, I just have a hard time trying to tell people to do things I can't always do. Maybe I won't have to worry about it though, if we don't do live drills." She lifts a shoulder "More concerning is that this month is between. Akluseth isn't great with focus, and I know I'm going to need to rely on him to check visuals." Snorting into quiet laughter, "Is there a more honest way to be?" is Jo's counter to that first. "I ain' afraid of goin' after what I want. Of bein' who I am." Reaching for her flask, "Yer time would've came eventually," she gives on the main topic as she looks over the maps overall. "Some enjoy the power they get to wield from it. Others learn very quickly that they'd rather live out the rest of their lives not havin' to deal with that responsibility. Ya learn whose wing to avoid should they ever become wingleaders, too. The ones that let bein' leader go to their heads." Once she takes a drink, her open study on the younger woman, "I can see ya risin' the ranks," she notes with a nod. "Might not be yer thing right now, but, the fact that ya don' want it would make ya a better candidate, ya know?" And then, Between, which sparks the convict rider's interest. "Get him practicin' now, if ya can," she suggests on visuals. "Mm, but how do you know what you want?" The young brownrider counters with a wry smile. For leadership she shrugs, "Wasn't always that way if you'd asked me at the beginning? I would have told you we were going to graduate at the top of the class and excel in that little experiment they call a leadership program." She shrugs, "Amazing how quickly reality smacks the ambition out of a person. I wouldn't put any money on climbing the ladder of success just yet. I'd settle for figuring out a wing where Akluseth and I belong." She admits with a deep sigh. "We are working on it, I'd like to try practicing having someone send him visuals then sketching them out and having the sender check them. If it didn't rely on sketching ability, I'd mention it to Keys as a way of practicing. You could probably send the same visual back and forth between multiple dragons and have it work the same way." She sighs, "He's lucky I have an excellent memory most of the time." To that first, Jo settles back as she holds onto her flask before she answers, "Well, gotta ask yerself, Ed," with that brazen tone and grin. "Don' be afraid of what answers turn up." There's a pregnant pause before she asks, "Do ya know?" On Leadership, "The wing doesn' matter when it comes to ambition, darlin'," she says with a slight shake of her head. "I'm sure ya'll get it back, no matter what wing ya'll get tapped into." She wordlessly offers Edyis a drink from her flask as she addresses visuals with a nod and "Good. He can ask Tac. He can send some his way. That beach, for one." "There was a time when I knew, sure. But I got greedy." Breathing in deeply as she contemplates, "Having to start all over from the ground up has a queer effect on a person. More so when the things you used as a moral compass become fickle." There's a head tilt, as though glancing at the maps. "That beach, sounds like a mighty good start. " Her lips curling wryly. Seeming to accept that answer by the nod, "Sometimes, startin' over ain' such a bad thing," Jo states evenly, studying her anew. "Who I was in Keogh would've dealt with this place a lot differently than who I am today." Taking a drink now, "So find out what Ed the dragonrider wants rather than what Edyis the holder girl would've wanted. They're two separate people now. Moral compasses change." Pause. "Let me know when ya think Akluseth can handle the beach visual," she says then neutrally. "Then, once ya can Between, let it be the first place to hit." Edyis is slow to nod in agreement to the first, as though weighing that thought. "Maybe not, but what does a girl with an unhealthy interest in booze, and several bad habits no good holder girl should have do with herself once the future becomes unpredictable?" There's a wry smile again for mention of the beach, "Naturally I expect you to be there making sure we don't get ourselves stuck or lost." "What sort of bad habits?" Yeah, Jo bypassed all of that just to pick up on those particular words. Still, despite the tease, she adds, "What that girl should do with herself? Figure her shit out quick before someone else does it for her, that's what. S'like learnin' that dragon in yer head all over again," and she knocks two fingers against her forehead as she says it. "From the way I see it, holdbreds that Impress don' have much choice but to look at themselves. Matin' flights alone." She shakes her head to that, and there's open laughter on that last before she quips back, "Of course. I ain' gonna strand ya, darlin'. We'll even celebrate after." Edyis laughs, leaning her elbows in and her voice staying low. "Let's see, lockpicking, eavesdropping, lying, forgery. Not to mention a potentially unhealthy attraction to persons who promise nothing but trouble, however fun that brand of trouble might be." Mating flight talk gets a grimace that sours her mood and expression. "Biology is a misogynist." She states cryptically. "Those are s'pose to be bad habits?" That sounds rhetorical, coming from Jo as she sends the weyrling a look. "And, I don' see anythin' unhealthy 'bout an attraction." It's given lightly, even. Edyis's mating flight response gets a slight tilt of her head and a frown as she simply returns with a blunt, "What?" "There is something seriously wrong with the fact that females have to actually break themselves and men get to wave their bits around pain-free," Edyis states vehemently. Jo appears even more dubious, the woman blinking a few times before she ventures forth with, "Break themselves," in an echo. "What, as in, gettin' fucked?" looking for clarification. "The girls only?" "Well so far as I know men don't really have that membrane that is supposed to break when you do that for the first time?" Edyis offers muttering. "Unless they do, and the healer diagrams are all lies." She allows after a moment. It only takes a second before it clicks for Jo, and it shows on her face as it dawns into a slow smile. "Not even back at the hold? Ya never...?" and the convict rider is doing some obscene wiggle movement with a couple of her fingers. But now that she got the gist, "Look, darlin', ya don' want yer break to be durin' a matin' flight. It's reasonable." Edyis scrunches her nose. "At the hold, certainly not." And as Jo expounds that expression goes more sour. "I get that everyone keeps saying that. I just... of the few males I've ever felt the slightest inclination toward most are horribly bad ideas. Of the ones that aren't? Who wants to hear, "Sorry I have no interest in you other than your ability to put something between my legs and make my life easier." She blinks, "That really didn't come out right." "And here I am, makin' things all the more....confusin'," Jo notes wryly, shaking her head. "Well, ya ain' gotta feel anythin' for them to do it. Most guys'll fuck ya without even knowin' yer name. Even, if ya need someone, I might know a guy or two that'll at least be gentle. Either way, Ed, I'd get it taken care of before that dragon of yers start chasin', yeah?" The bluerider appears cut-and-dry about it, but she softens it with a grin and a, "This'll be one of those times where yer gonna ask what Ed the dragonrider would do with this situation." "Get so drunk that I won't remember a thing and walk around with a sign that says 'Virgin?'" She shakes her head, that suggestion clearly an overflow from a certain brown. "Really he doesn't need ever to get laid; I'm sure they can neuter dragons. They do it to dogs and herdbeast." Somewhere in the bowl there is an indignant brown. She sulks folding her arms and resting her chin on them. "It might come down to that, a name of someone. I thought about asking E'nest but realized the temptation to murder him after would be far too great. I'm also not really sure I want to be told no either." Chuckling a bit, "If that's what it takes," Jo answers bluntly, studying the girl more than the maps before her. "Though, ya better off sober. Make sure the poor sob does it right, at least." As for Akluseth being neutered, there's a wry, "I fought Tac the first few times before I let it go. Let him be him. For me, it wasn' 'bout the sex, though. More, I prefer bein' in control'n all that. Learned the hard way that ya can' stop'em, darlin'. They ain' canines. Let me know if want me to ask him. Guy I have in mind, he's discrete. Ain' the kiss'n tell sort." Edyis sighs. Eyes squeezing shut for a moment before opening one and nodding. "Do I have to buy him dinner after?" She murmurs half jokingly, "I can't promise I'll be entirely sober, but I'll do my best not to be blind stinking drunk. But discrete, discrete is great." "He'll take whatever he can get, but it's not necessary," Jo answers on the mystery man with a cryptic chuckle. "Best just stick to gettin' the deed done'n lettin' him go his way. I'll have Tac talk to his dragon'n see what his time looks like." Something is amusing her about this situation, but she doesn't seem to be revealing it at all. Rather, "Once it's done, ya'll be alright. Though maybe at the beach, we can discuss how the next time could be more pleasurable." It's an open tease as she leans forward to start rolling up the maps, one by one from the table. Edyis exhales, "I don't think there'll be much problem with that." The letting him go his way part she must mean. She might already be regretting her decision at this point. "Mmhm. Let's see if I can just get through one awkward encounter before we go planning not, so awkward ones." Laughing as she gets up with the rolled up maps, turning towards the area where they are stored, "It's a deal, then," Jo says over her shoulder. "I'll have his dragon reach out to yers. He rides brown, too. Telgar wingrider." Once the maps are set away, she pockets up her flask and makes a clickin-whistle sound that wakes up Mime from his nap before she says to Edyis, "Well, I better head out. Let me know when the deed's done, eh?" She'll even gently knock into the weyrling's shoulder with her own as she collects her jacket and begin the walk out. |
