Don't be afraid of what's to come, remember who we raised you to be. Remember your father, and be the kind of man who does the right thing. Be honest, be true. You have a home now, protect it with all you got. I love you, baby, forever and ever.

E'sren reads over the note his mother left one more time before folding it again, the creases well-worn. He's done this a few times already.

He sits on the couch in his weyr, with the package she told him he'd find, exactly where she told him he'd find it. It was large, and he hadn't opened it yet because he didn't know if he was ready for what he'd find inside. It was a weird shape, he couldn't tell what it was going to be. But he reaches over now for it, shifting to turn himself towards it while he unties the twine binding the cloth as wrapping.

When the first fold peels away he pauses, recognizing immediately the shade of wood, and he has to take a deep, steadying breath to continue unwrapping. At first it's just the neck of the guitar, then as he pulls downward he uncovers the curve of the body of it, the smooth polish. He runs his fingers down the strings gently with reverence.

Is that music? Ahruth asks, trying to see through the entrance from his wallow.

"Yeah buddy. You could say that," E'sren answers aloud, pulling it loose of the swaddle of cloth and cradling it in his lap. He strums his thumb down one string at a time, finding all the places where it's out of tune from unuse. He'll take care of that. "Pop's guitar. He taught me how to play it when I was a kid. Before he... before he died he told Ma to give it to me." And now here it is, and he thought he had to leave it behind when he went with the dragonrider.

So enthralled is he with this surprise that he doesn't notice at first that there's more in the package. It's only after he goes to move the bundle of cloth that he realizes a small pouch and another scrap of paper; a wad of bright blue yarn that turns out to be a long scarf with fringe at either end; along with a few smaller bundles wrapped in leather, which prove to be some of the things he had from before, little collectible things from placed he'd visited: little carvings, a shiny piece of black rock, etc. He smiles while discovering them one by one, then turns his attention to the second note.

Your share it says, simply, and his brow furrows as he hesitantly picks up the little pouch. It couldn't be. But opening it proves that yes, it can. The pouch contains what might be considered a lot of marks to some people, though certainly not a fortune. Not even a small one. More than the amount was the meaning. A payout means a goodbye to the business, and even though he'll always be a Renai, he isn't a trader anymore.

< I love this vignette. It's so touching, and so sad at the end. I feel for E'sren.

Well written.

< I love getting to read about E'sren-- his feelings and his past. He's so good about smiling in his day to day interactions, which keeps his feelings under wraps. It's fantastic what you've done with E'sren's family, with how close they are. The payout was an amazing touch, and just fit given what E'sren's Impression means coupled with his mother's business-like view of the world. It's all really touching. <3 Great stuff!
