Southern Beach Golden stand stretches in both directions for as far as the eye can see, broken only by the occasional encroaching cliff, the ancient stone formed into rockpools and outcroppings. Inland, open sand is gradually taken over by lush greenery: dense forest extending all the way back to distant mountains that might even be days of walking from here. The ocean, too, stretches out unbroken: there's no other land to be seen, nothing but blue and blue and blue until the point at which it hits the horizon, where blue meets another kind of blue, in the endless, cloudless sky. A tent-like structure has been strung up between trees and a few tall posts, providing shelter from the hot sun. There are no tables, and no chairs, beneath it, however: just a few haphazardly slung blankets, providing only the most basic comfort. A few paces beyond the edge of the tent is a bonfire built from driftwood. It must be a rest day, because it's very early still when ocean breezes stretch to stir the leaves in Largath's mind. The image is of a stretch of secluded beach, pristine waters, a blanket spread in the shade of a palm, a couple of large baskets nearby, and all within easy reach of the water. « She even packed that brush I was telling you about too, you know, if you can peel yourselves away for the day. » See? Akluseth totally has his buddy's back. The rest day must translate well to Telgar as well, for the brown is quick to respond to the invitation. « Did she? We just finished up. We come! » There's an eagerness for the getaway, and it really doesn't take long at all before the Telgari pair can be seen winking in from Between and angling leisurely for a landing. Edyis is sprawled on the large patchwork quilt, dark curls loose in a halo around her, eyes shut against the sunlight. Her swimsuit is a southern styled one, a creative blend of knots and fabric in deep red hues, and leaves most of her bare to the sunlight, though not to the point of immodesty. Akluseth rumbles his greeting from out in the deeper waters. Her eyes flutter open, and she watches their path to the ground sitting up. When N'rek is free from Largath's landing, he removes his straps and sets to removing all of his riding gear. He ends up only in grey shorts as his brown goes to join Akluseth. "Just getting out of a wing meeting," he greets, approaching her in only that as he briefly look towards the water. And then Edyis gets his attention - particularly the skin underneath her swimsuit. Dropping to a seat right beside her, "I haven't had a good swim in ages," he tells her, grinning. "We're going in that water there, right? Just so that I don't drape myself over you in dehydration." Even if there is drinks there and all that. "Good, I'd hoped you'd be able to steal away but you never know. Figured I'd tempt Largath with a good scrubbing just to be safe." She laughs, dark eyes unable to stop that customary stare at all the bared ink. Edyis grins, "I did bring drinks but yes, if you want to swim first," pushing to her feet. He gets a kiss in greeting, before she tries to lead him by hand out to the water. "Winter's settled in at Reaches, snow and all. I figured it probably wasn't much better at Telgar." Brow raising, "Tempting my dragon now, are we?" and when N'rek looks over, he can see a serene Largath in the water with Akluseth. "You're going to spoil him," he warns her in a tease, "and then I'm the one that has to deal with him at home, woman." Of course he knows she's staring at him. Maybe that's why he stretches his arms above his head in a way that flexes muscles under the shift of inked in arms before getting to his feet and consuming that kiss. Eager to get to the water, "Telgar's probably not as bad as the Reaches," he agrees. "Still bad, though. What's in style over there - skating over ice? Though the talk of your clutch is all anyone is talking about these days." "I was informed that I should give more scritches. Akluseth felt it was his duty, out of loyalty to his 'brother', to tell me this." She laughs, "Besides Dragon washing always goes quicker when you've more than one set of hands." Mention of the clutch gets a pained expression. "Niahvth's got a habit of unruly numbers it would seem. That the holds and Halls have already taken issue with searching is the real issue." There's a scrunch of her nose, "Hopefully it's just a Reachian thing, otherwise the dragons might know something we don't." For style she laughs, "I never was any good at it, though they do skate once the ice on the lake gets thick enough." Laughing, "If he gets spoiled, I'm going to leave him on your weyr ledge," Rek promises with a look. "You'll be begging to have him gone after a day, watch. He's going to demand it every time." Once they reach the water, the time for talking is done. He takes a smooth dive in, showing marked skill at swimming in the ocean as he doesn't go too deep in. He goes as far as their dragons, perhaps trying to entice Edyis to move forward after him, the water glinting off of his head against the sun. "Prefer all this to sliding over ice," he says then, spreading his arms from the water surface to encompass the whole southern area. "He can't possibly get any more spoiled than you already are." Edyis notes with bright laughter, she trails watching him dive in, wading in after him, dipping beneath the waves briefly to slick her hair back and out of her face, dark eyes following his path with a smile. She keeps to where she can touch the bottom, stopping when the water reaches her chin, she grins at him and his preference. "I think I prefer it too." A beat, "You swim well." It's almost suspicious. "How am I spoiled? Or is this your way of saying that I will be?" Rek is taking it like that, wading close to her with a few dips beneath the surface. Snickering, "He's silly half of the time. Largath. My wingmates find it funny how one of the most serious had gotten chosen by the one of the silliest dragons. I've never laughed nearly as much before he came into my life. Ever notice that about Akluseth, too? How something in you changes and you end up doing something or being a certain way you weren't before him?" When he's close enough now, he tries to draw her into an embrace with his arms around her, the comment on his swimming skills getting back, "I do. It's one of the learned skills I enjoy since being at the Weyr." "A little of both probably." She laughs when he talks of his brown, and for his question she thinks for a minute, returning his embrace. "I think I accept things more because of him. I was one of those who worked really hard because I thought that maybe if I did, I'd end up where I wanted to be, somewhere where I might actually make a difference, you know?" She laughs then, "The thing is, ever since I impressed? Almost nothing has turned out the way it was supposed to." She smiles up at him then, as though considering, "And for the most part, I find myself ok with that these days." Grinning as he holds her close, "What were your plans before Akluseth?" Rek asks, curious. "Was it to be a tempting harper? Acceptance is a hard-earned skill." He looks over towards their dragons, the Telgar brown lounging in the water like a fish made for it. "It's interesting you say that though," he tells her casually, looking back at her. "I think mine wasn't so much acceptance as it was purpose. If I couldn't do what I thought I was meant for, because of family, then, what was I to do?" It was rhetorical at best, drawing a hand through her damp hair before he gestures for them to return to shore from the dip as he says, "I'm glad you called me over," he states, "because, there was something I wanted to talk to you about that you had mentioned the last we met." "Mine or my father's?" Edyis wonders, pressing her lips against his chest. "You aren't far off if we are talking mine, sometimes I think I might have tested for the Hall, had things gone differently." She half smiles, following his gaze at the two browns, While Largath lounges Akluseth swims deeper, savoring the chance to throw himself against the waves, diving and re emerging occasionally in discourse with the elder brown. "What was it you were meant for?" She wonders, curiosity sparked. His fingers through her hair has her shivering slightly, his question however, causes a lift of dark brows as those eyes focus on him intently, letting him lead the way to shore. "Should I be concerned?" Snorting, "And your father wouldn't have wanted that," N'rek concludes with a shake of his head. "If I had a choice of who'd I marry, I'd prefer one that was interesting and well-learned to one that was just thrusted at me for a good match. I sometimes wonder about the traditions of Hold life, us having lived it ourselves." Largath is equally interested in watching Akluseth with those waves, being buoyed by them. To Ed's question, "A completely different craft to what I was suited to, or marriage," is his answer before wading with her back to shore. Once on sand he grabs a towel for them both and heads towards the abandoned quilt before he answers her last with a shake of his head. "I'm curious about that venture you're doing," he explains briefly, toweling himself off and draping it over his head to shield out the sun for awhile as he sits. "He loved me in his way." Edyis notes softly, "The curse of filial ambitions, handed down through three generations. Sons to tend the land, to forge connections with the Halls that we did the most trade with. Daughters to wed for advantage, or to trade for something useful. Not that I let being useful hinder my education. I devoured every book I ever laid hands on." A wry twist of her mouth with this. She looks over at him, smiling. "Strange isn't it, how each is so vastly different than the next in traditions." She accepts the towel, patting out her hair first before drying the rest of her. "What craft drew your interest, and which woman stole your heart?" She looks at him then with a wry smile, as though trying to imagine him in the traditional holder role and possibly failing. For business there's a loft of her brows, and a nod. "It's a partnership, for one thing. But I'd be happy to answer what I can." "And yet," Rek agrees, "there's similarities in traditions as well. I'm not much of a fan of being told what my life should be like without my input." Settled now with the towel on his head, on crafts he answers, "Wood, naturally. I was always good as working with wood and different trees. I had an uncle that got me into it, much to my father's irritation. He didn't want that for me when he'd rather I aim higher like smithcraftsman or something. He wanted me to marry, too, but as for the woman...." and there's short laughter and shake of his head. "Her name was Sozine. She wasn't my betrothed, but she was promised to someone else. Someone else she preferred. Took turns to realize I was better off." He falls silent on the last before he says, "I'd like to hear about it. The partnership. What you do in it. How profitable it is." "Mm, there is that." Edyis agrees with a grimace. She reaches for one of the baskets, dragging it over within reach. Mention of his favored craft earns a slow spreading smile, "It would have suited you. That bookcase you made, I've never seen it's like. Flicker has even made it her favorite napping spot." There is an odd tilt to her brows as she listens about the woman, trying her best perhaps not to smirk. "I would say I am sorry, but, truthfully?" She digs into the basket and offers a paper wrapped sandwich in his direction with an easy smile. "I have absolutely no shame in monopolizing on her idiocy." Talk of business has her quiet, pulling out a set of wooden tumblers and filling them from a bottle that had been tucked into the basket. "Alida's really the one to talk to, it's mostly transport and trading. The whole thing is built on her contacts. Fair dealing, no stealing goods or selling shit stock. It's fairly profitable, but hard to keep up with these days." There's a pause, "I was thinking about asking if you'd be interested in picking up some of the runs, at least if it is something that you would be interested in." He gets a studying look. Nodding his humble thanks to her compliment, "My uncle was always encouraging me to think outside the box when it came to wood," N'rek admits a bit sheepishly as he watches her with the basket. "Nature is Largath's sort of thing, so, I try to marry the two. I haven't made anything like that bookcase before, but the tree you gave me brought that out of me, I guess.Your fire lizard has turned it into a nest?" That's one for the books. The brownrider appears amused by it, and Ed's response on Sozine has him chuckling and saying, "Granted, I didn't look like much back then. Just some skinny holdbred that was always whittling with pieces of wood." Now, business. His face changes to one of focus, nodding to the things she says. "You've mentioned this Alida to me before," he notes slowly. When she offers him some of the runs, "I would need the details, but I wouldn't mind taking some runs off of your hands. Are the runs quick? How do you go about them?" He then takes the sandwich and starts to unwrap it. "I wouldn't call it a nest but, I did wind up sticking a pillow down to protect it from her claws." Edyis notes lifting one of the cups to her lips. As talk turns to business there is a slow nod. "How long it takes probably depends on how you run them, all at once and you're probably looking at a full rest day every few sevens, but they could probably be managed a little better, I would go through the details of each of course, run a few with you even." On Alida there is a shrug, "She's kind of the older sister I wished I had, taught me most of what I know about self defense." Rek is still finding it amusing, though. "Fire lizards are strange creatures," he says aloud, shaking his head as he unwraps his sandwich. He listens close and nods on the business workings, adding behind her, "Maybe I could take up a few on my restdays, provided it doesn't take all of the day. Do you have clients that you run to? Alida's contacts, you mean, or are those the suppliers? It'd be good to do a few runs together," he agrees when Edyis offers, grinning. "It'll be like here, today. Only, we're not being lazy." He seems to consider the works on Alida before he takes a bite of the sandwich. "I think Jo might've mentioned her to me, too, in passing," he says as he seems to be going over it in his head. "Used to be a guard, right?" "A little of both." Edyis answers unwrapping her own sandwich. "Suppliers and buyers, some are my contacts, some hers." There's a tilt of her head between bites watching him with a crooked grin, "If we split the work, we could probably have it done by lunch time." Edyis finds the prospect oddly pleasing, nestling the cups in the sand so that they don't tip or spill. She fishes out a few more parcels, a decent attempt at a bubbly among them. "What, you don't approve of a rest day being used to actually rest?" She teases at his comment of laziness. Leaning over far enough to press her lips against his shoulder if he allows. "Because I don't think I do the lazy thing often enough, personally." Talk of the former guard has her nodding then, quietly. "I can bring you in on my side of things, but if you are looking to dig deeper, it's her trust you'd have to earn. It doesn't come easily or cheaply either." "Sounds feasible," N'rek considers the plan as he chews, nodding. "I could use a little extra spending marks, if that's involved. I do intend to get some resting done," and by the look on his face, there's likely more than rest involved. He grins to that kiss towards his shoulder as he adds, "That wing's working you too much? Should I talk to your wingleader and explain to her the finer points of letting her wingriders rest for recreational purposes? I can be quite convincing." Yep. He takes up his cup again on the topic of Alida, nodding once to what Ed says before he comments back, "Would she approve, though? Even if I'm on your end of it? I'm not looking to have a former guard on my back later on." It's amusing, his words and the tone with it despite that thin level of seriousness, too. "Mm, naturally." Edyis answers on marks with a wry smile, "Unless of course you would prefer some other reward for your efforts." The fingers of her free hand lifting to trail along the muscles of his back at the look he gives her. She settles a bit closer, laughing at his suggestion. "Most of my wing mates only just forgot about the whole fleeing like a drunken runner with two broken legs after Yesia's flight. I can only imagine what Mielline would say if you showed up in her office complaining about my lack of free time. Jo would be laughing her ass off for weeks." The idea alone has Edyis nearly breathless with laughter. Of Alida, there is an almost guilty smile. "Well she agreed to it already, so I suppose all that's left is for you to be your usual charming self." "I'm open to all manner of rewards," is what Rek says to that as he chews through his sandwich, his grin infectious. "And anyway, that's how my wing is. They'll knock on someone for winning a flight regardless of who it was. Your wingleader would be honored that a brownrider from Telgar cares about her wing practices, I'd imagine." Yeah, right. He takes a drink then before a brow is lifted towards Edyis for her admittance about Alida. "Did you," he says more than asks with a snort. "If she agreed, then she shouldn't need my complete charming arsenal. You've saved me all the trouble." Of course he's teasing, since he adds, "I would love to meet the friend you talk of and ease her mind. Despite her agreeing." Edyis laughs. "She probably would, best be careful though. She managed to poach Jo from Glacier." There's a teasing wiggle of her brows. She looks solemn when his brows loft, nodding slowly. "No, not the whole arsenal, about... fifteen percent of the arsenal. The whole thing is too dangerous to use on one person. Just look at what happened to me!" She can barely keep the serious face up before she's bursting into airy laughter, leaning against him affectionately at the tease. "I appreciate that. Not only so I don't have to worry but, I admit there's a slightly ulterior motive to pulling someone else in. I'd like her to see, that it's ok to trust, that there are people worth trusting still." The last spoken softly. On his charm, Rek seems to give what's said some serious consideration, even if on the surface there's a teasing quality to his response. "Hmmm, I think you're right," he's slow to say after some consideration, nodding. "I might end up finding her parked on my ledge. You did succumb so quickly...." and he gently nudges her shoulder with his when she leans. Something else Ed says has him asking, "She has trust issues?" inviting elaboration. "You mean, more than the usual?" He finishes his sandwich. For his consideration there is a funny twist of expression, which dissolves into laughter. "Maybe only five percent, just to be safe." The rest has her more serious, but still smiling. "I think Jo and I are probably the people she is closest to, but she's a lot like Jo. Less socially adapted, and requiring a little bit more delicate handling." It's protective, that description, as she lifts her cup to her lips, and after a sip holds it between her hands as dark eyes focus out over the water. "But, enough about business, and plans for the future," setting her cup aside and turning to focus her full attention on him. Reaching her fingertips over to tip his chin in her direction, her intent to pull him into the kind of kiss that might leave him breathless and a little bit shaken. "This is a real rest day, and I aim to take full advantage of every last minute of it." "That's pretty potent," N'rek warns of the five percent in an open tease. "I'll try my best to water it down though." He falls serious then as well when he observes Edyis doing so on her friend, nodding with the familiarity of one bluerider in comparison to another. "You're protective of her," he openly notes his observation, nodding with interest. He could add more, but when she turns her wiles on him fully, there doesn't seem much the brownrider could do but to succumb. "This is true," he confirms on it being a rest day, his smile quick as he gives into that warm kiss. "I intend to take all that his beach has to offer." And other things. Business can wait. |
