The dreams she had nonchalantly mentioned to Lycinea were more nightmares than the implied sensual fantasies. In the silence of her weyr, she admitted that. Just now they had been about frozen flies laying in wait in her baths, their beady eyes so reminiscent of draconic ones, all staring fixed at her.

She got out of the four poster canopy bed she'd brought with her and padded out of the bed chamber and closer to the ledge where Niahvth's wallow just shielded from the elements. The High Reaches ground weyrs were far more luxuriously appointed than the Igen ones, but she didn't like how far she was from her dragon, and her wakeful state was directly related to Niahvth's return from the bowl and was waiting for her.

Niahvth's return was directly related to the nightmares that caused cold sweats and fitful nights in her rider. The dragon mused that if she could, she would just rise and get it over with, if only for Irianke's sake, but that would be quite unnatural.

There, in the wallow, Irianke sunk down and nestled herself into the crook of one of Niahvth's forelimbs, reaching to pull a nearby fur over her body. With an arm curled beneath her head, she was just ready to doze off again when, « He is still awake. » And then a moment later, clarification, « Cadejoth. »

The Igen goldrider drew in a sharp breath, not savoring the sweet vanilla and sandalwood scents of the oil her dragon preferred as she was wont to. "I may have showed my hand too early," she said aloud. She drifted her hand across the lower curve of Niahvth's belly, yet unswelled by the eggs that would surely come soon.

« You only told him what is most obvious to everyone. Why no one else has told him such is a mystery. »

Beneath the furs, her other hand rested on her belly, her strong fingers pressing harder and harder seeking something that she had vowed would never happen again.

« Breileth's never said you should not have a family. »

Irianke was silent, snuggling in deeper into her dragon's side. "It would be too hard. It was too hard." She'd done it once, bright-eyed and new. She had been optimistic in spite of the turns of emotionally straining training she had gone through; optimistic that other dragonriders did it, it shouldn't be so hard.

How quickly had she been disabused of that notion. How quickly had she given up her child to strangers and how quickly had her son latched onto his favorite nanny, now foster mother. She paid the woman handsomely to assuage her guilt.

"I want to see him."

Niahvth obliged, her mind racing through the dragons at Igen. The time differences would mean he would be awake by now, the lowest stablehand on the ladder and thus all the early morning chores no one else wanted to do. She settled into the mind of a blue being bathed in the early morning light of the desert sun and looked through his eyes to see the lanky twelve year old, all limbs and long torso, trudging a sleepy path to the stables. The image with all its movements and no sounds was shared with her rider. Then, then the young boy crested out of view and Niahvth quietly withdrew. With luck, the young blue wouldn't even realize. If not, Breileth would have words again about the sanctity and privacy each dragon was afforded.

"You could just have asked," Irianke said dryly, "I doubt any of them would say no."

« I don't want to bother. » Meaning, she didn't want to intrude. It made sense in the gold's head.

Irianke started to doze off again.

« They are both awake. It is a restless night. »

She didn't ask how the dragon knew. "Good night, Niahvth," said the goldrider, firmly spoken and firmly closing the door on any guilt she might have in being the cause of the Weyrleader's sleepless night.
