| By the early hours of the fourth day of the second month, the dragonhealers have confirmed it: they expect Roszadyth and Lythronath's eggs to hatch at some point in the next twenty-four hours. The exact timing, of course, remains to be seen, but that's no reason for idleness; indeed, the candidates, especially, are all put to work from breakfast onwards, with chores including setting out cushions and sweeping the galleries, chopping up meat for the new dragons, and assisting with feast preparations both in the kitchens and in the living caverns. By evening, there is still no movement from the sands, leading some to suspect that these eggs really do intend to keep everyone waiting forever. When there's still no movement by nine, the candidates are encouraged to get some sleep (if they can). It could be a long, long wait. Evening hatchings can be awkward at the best of times, given the need to bring others to the Weyr; late evening hatchings are even worse. It was a long, long day for the candidates at High Reaches as they waited for the eggs to hatch, and indeed, many had already gone to bed by the time Roszadyth and Lythronath raised their voices to hum. After all that waiting, however, it was over in no time at all, with the new weyrlings safely ensconced in the barracks alongside Niahvth's clutch before midnight. In the end, one gold, two bronze, two brown, three blue and five green dragons successfully hatched and met their partners. Included in those:
News spreads quickly through the hatching celebration: the Weyrwoman has made the call for a half day of work tomorrow as the hatching was so late and the feast ended so early (in the morning). |
