| Five sevens had turned into four sevens... and then three. Now, it was probably two-- maybe even only one, and I'kris was beginning to feel an edge of manic panic hovering in the periphery of his thoughts. He was running out of time. His nerves were shot. Even a single drink had him tipsy, and that was dangerous, he knew: he needed to stop drinking. He couldn't afford to say anything wrong. But drinking made everything feel easier, at least briefly. Sex wasn't any better, though at least Vallia was nice about it. Helpful. Shells, she was pretty. And fun. He wished... He didn't know if there would be an 'after' to plan for. "It's so exciting," said Lujayn. "I love candidates. And hatchings." For I'kris, it felt more like a countdown until his doom. His end. He was running out of time. Tanashi's arrival had just made things worse. Another reminder. Were his dragon's eggs just not good enough? Was he just not good enough? He wished the boy back at Monaco. Riding a bronze dragon, if that was what would shut him up. He didn't want the reminder of home. He didn't want to feel like he was on display. He didn't want... He ran the edge of the knife over his finger and watched the blood as it slid towards his nail. It hurt. That was good. That meant he could still feel. But you're running out of time, he reminded himself. Man up. Get it done. If you fail, no one will ever respect you. Your Father will never respect you. He buried his feelings. He smiled, and laughed, and flirted. He had nightmares: terrible ones. He felt constantly on the edge of panic, despite his best efforts. He was afraid. And the count of days grew fewer and fewer. If he didn't do something soon, they would run out altogether. But how? |
