The eldest of High Reaches' queens, Rielsath, goes up suddenly during the graduation party for the weyrlings from Ysavaeth and Cadejoth's first clutch, in Month 12 of Turn 28. Her abrupt flight, and the snowstorm she rises into, make for a short chase - and sees her caught by visiting brown Svissath from Monaco, not yet graduated out of weyrlinghood. Monaco use the opportunity to build further bonds between the two Weyrs, and have teenage I'kris and Svissath posted to High Reaches for the duration.

For I'kris, whose father disapproves of his Impression to brown, and is a staunch conservative horrified by Iolene, this becomes the perfect opportunity to prove himself. He begins to plan an assassination, working under the mistaken idea that this is what his father wants. His increased agitation as the time when he must perform this act draws nearer is largely covered by his foreignness, and how overwhelmed he is: no one suspects him of anything until after the deed takes place.

On the 28th day of Month 2, Turn 30, I'kris poisons Iolene's tea and watches her die in the weyr she largely shares with K'del. In the process, he more or less confirms the fact that Iolene faked her queen's flight to take her position as Senior Weyrwoman. K'del falls to pieces over the death of the woman he loves, and flees the weyr, leaving Brieli and Azaylia (whose queens are likely to rise long before Rielsath, who is still on the sands) to take control of the grieving Weyr, with the assistance of B'sil, now Acting Weyrleader.

As the investigation continues, I'kris comes under suspicion for his peculiar behaviour - and the even more peculiar behaviour of his dragon. Ultimately, H'kon puts the pieces together and presents the information to the goldriders, who bring I'kris in for questioning. He attempts to implicate H'kon, but despite planting evidence, the other brownrider is cleared, leaving I'kris to face justice alone.

But how can you punish a dragonrider? What of his dragon? The matter is complicated by I'kris' ties to Monaco, who have an agenda of their own in seeking a conclusion to this matter. Finally, in month 5, I'kris is turned over to Monaco. Three days later, he and Svissath go between.
