It wasn't as though I'kris had known Rielsath would rise that afternoon; it certainly wasn't as though he'd had a planned out strategy for how to win. Svissath had chased in a few flights, and none successfully - even if he had known she was going to rise, there's no way he would have even contemplated winning.

He was pretty sure, too, that if it hadn't been for that snowstorm, they'd never have had a chance.

But the snow had fallen, and Rielsath had gotten mixed up in it and run into Svissath - and Svissath had managed to ensnare her before she got away again.

And I'kris was not complaining.

It was nearly a turn now since he'd done the almost unforgivable, and Impressed not the bronze that was expected of him, but a brown. Oh, everyone claimed that there was nothing wrong with being a brownrider, nothing to be ashamed of, but M'kris had expected things of his son, and I'kris had known it.

He loved Svissath, couldn't imagine life without him, certainly couldn't imagine riding a different dragon. But, but... why couldn't he have been bronze? (( « Because I am brown, » Svissath had answered, once, surprised at the question.)

But here... now... was an opportunity.

One couldn't spend more than a few minutes around M'kris without knowing his feelings on things: the importance of tradition, the unhelpfulness of change. The need for consistency in all things.

And, lately, his utter disapproval for High Reaches' exile Weyrwoman.

How could K'del have gotten away with getting her installed like that? Thinking with his dick, of course; well, he'd always been a useless Weyrleader anyway, as far as M'kris was concerned.

Nor was his voice alone: most of Monaco, the Weyrleaders included, disapproved of Iolene.

Getting rid of Tiriana was supposed to help Monaco gain some influence at High Reaches; everyone had guessed that, when the whole deal had been made. Well. M'kris had, anwyay.

Monaco would have a goldrider at High Reaches, even if she might not be Monaco born and bred. She'd owe them. And they could send bronzeriders to her flight, and, well, if they were really lucky she'd be the first to rise.

A Monacoan Weyrwoman. Maybe even with a Monacoan Weyrleader.

You had to admire Oriane and M'kar for that.

But the exile bitch had ruined all of that. True, it sounded like Brieli had some influence with Iolene, and that was good.

But everything you heard about Iolene was worrying.

I'kris stood on the ledge of the weyr he'd been assigned. It had been easy to encourage them to send him here early - better than putting him in a wing for only a little while before he left again anyway. Much more sensible to have him at High Reaches to begin with, until the clutch hatched.

It was a crappy weyr, frankly, much worse than the one he had at home.

But from here, he could stare down at the ledges far below. He could see Ysavaeth and Cadejoth on the senior queen's ledge, curled up as if they were the recently mated pair and not Rielsath and his Svissath.

If he had his way, she wouldn't be on that ledge for much longer.

Finally, I'kris had a way to make his father proud.
