| By the time she got to her weyr, her bed, Aishani's hands were trembling with exhaustion. It was possibly shock; she'd seen the Healers hovering around a few pale and shaky people earlier, hauling them off to the infirmary. Dimly, she thought of the Weyrleader, wondered if someone should have checked on him, but she could barely look at him, let alone think of him without her head feeling like it might crack open. Isn't that what you wanted? Isn't that what you hoped for? Not like this. It wasn't how she'd imagined it, not at all. There was no pleasure in this. Iolene-- Shani found the image had been burned into her vision, into her mind, something she'd never forget. She couldn't quite believe she was gone, even though she'd found her. And Ysavaeth... Their secrets die with them. They're not yours anymore. But was that true? She'd helped Iolene as Iesaryth helped Ysavaeth, she'd lied about that like she'd lied about everything else, just that easy, never imagining it would lead to... death. It's not just Ysavaeth and the clutch, either. You did this. And that was the thought that had been lingering in the back of her mind, pushed aside for hours and hours of... of leading a Weyr she'd rather see destroyed. And yet, she hadn't done anything to make things worse, for all she'd thought she would, thought she'd want to. 'Brieli' had been the one to encourage Iolene's ideas, the one to make sure they spread to like-minded riders, the one to discredit K'del and try to drive a wedge between the two, because she thought Iolene was too good for him. She'd supported Iolene in her changes, even though she knew it would cause problems, that it would split the Weyr into factions. She'd gone to other Weyrs to pass on rumors, had Iesaryth bespeak them to see what was being said. She'd known at the graduation that the Igen riders were there because of those rumors and ideas. She'd heard the things Iolene's detractors said about her. She'd been pleased. She hadn't seen the danger. She'd used someone for her own ends, and now she was dead, and so was her dragon. If Aishani were a different person, she'd be sick from all of it. But she just tore the quilt from her wall like she could wrap herself in its sunlight, and went to sit with Iesaryth, who'd finally come down from her circling in the skies over the bowl. The gold's mind was stormy and as full of images and confusion as her own. She wished there was some way to forget everything, but every time she closed her eyes, she saw Iolene again, lying there. She hadn't been prepared for this. Why didn't I tell her? She told me her secrets, she would have understood. She would have tried to help. That chance was gone too. What do we do now? she asked Iesaryth, hoping the gold had a plan. Because she had what she wanted and it did nothing but make her feel hollow and ill, aching with crushing guilt. Would her family, at least, see this as enough? « Maybe we should try to make things right. » Shani had to laugh; her idea of right and wrong was skewed at best. But maybe letting Iesaryth take the lead for a little while wasn't the worst idea. She hadn't gotten anyone killed. Iolene had been murdered and it was Aishani's doing. She would find the person that did it, but she wasn't sure if she could call for blood. She could sacrifice everything in her life, her whole life really - to vengeance. But she didn't know if she could let anyone die for it again. |

< I really like this insight into Brieli's head; I've been so curious to see how she'd deal with it. Poor Brieli. What a situation she's gotten herself into.
Can't wait to see how things play out from here!

Poor Brieli. I love getting to see what she's going through at the moment, how she'd deal with getting what she wanted- just not in the way she had been expecting.
Be careful what you wish for, and all that.
