| Back home (funny, how easy it was to call this temporary weyr, this awful dank cave, 'home'), I'kris reflected on what R'hin had said. (He shut Svissath out-- and it helped, of course, that Svissath was so pleased to be back with Rielsath.) Six months between flights? Well, it was actually more like nine, but... still. Nine. And it had been nearly that many months again, since... did that mean she would rise again? Or was it just 'convenient' that she rose in time to take the Weyrleadership. And then to lose the clutch. It had always been surprising, but now, the more he thought about it, the more suspicious it seemed. The records here seemed to indicate that the dragonhealers confirmed it wasn't impossible, and, without knowledge of his own, he believed them. But if no one had records of it happening before... It all seemed rather too convenient, really. The idea that it might be all based on a lie didn't surprise him, really. He wouldn't put anything past her, in the end. Getting what she wanted. Ruining a way of life. Destroying things. But how had she done it? Was her queen so powerful she could convince a whole weyr? Had she then convinced them all that there was nothing surprising about losing a clutch? He shivered. If so, that made her a formidable queen. A formidable enemy. He felt his resolve solidify. He felt calm, and sure. Composed. Ready. R'hin had all but encouraged him. It was all right there. It made sense. One day, soon, he'd get the confirmation. He'd know for sure. And then... I'kris was going to make his Father proud at last. |
