He'd only thought to give Tiriana some space, on their return: to go elsewhere in the Weyr, and not force her to look at him. (To not force himself to look at her.)

And then -- flames. In retrospect, perhaps he wasn't surprised. Perhaps he'd even expected it.

But later, after they'd put out the fire, he stood in the wreckage of his home and despaired.

Ten turns of memories lay in scorched ruin around him. He could see hints of blue from the couch, the rug. Cracked tiles from the fireplace, now broken beyond repair. His things - all gone.

« It doesn't matter, » said Cadejoth, surprisingly perceptive. There was ice around the edges of his tone, and he shuddered, chains unhappily stiff, as if to shake it off. It was harder than it ought to have been.

It does matter.

Stomping through ash, K'del found bits and pieces. His graduation gifts, once displayed so proudly on the mantle, were all ruined. The glass brandy bottle had shattered; so had the farviewer. The writing box was barely recognisable: ash and dust.

He tried to think about what records had been in his desk, what irreplaceable things had just been turned to ash in a moment's pique. It was hard to think straight about it - hard to remember what things had been like, just this morning, when he'd pulled on his formal leathers, Milani's cufflinks, his best boots.

The rest of his clothes were ruined, now: he had nothing but what he stood in.

« You have me. »

It isn't enough.

Dully, he supposed it would be possible to make it liveable again. If you whitewashed the walls, and cleaned it all out. If you could get rid of the smell of smoke and ash and bitter anger.

It was worse than his old weyr. Seani's murder had scared him from there, but this-- this was personal. And maybe he'd even deserved it. You play with fire, and--

« You didn't deserve it. »

I did.

« No. K'del, stop. Just stop. »

It wasn't like Cadejoth to be so firm, and it shocked K'del into silence. The bronze had stuck his head in through the entrance, carefully steering past still-smoking rubble so that he could stare his rider down.

« It doesn't matter. You have me. We'll start again. We have a weyr to rebuild. »

K'del kicked at the rubble at his foot, and tried to feel more positive about it. Cadejoth's love overwhelmed him, though; a moment later, he found himself dropping to his knees, bitter tears beginning to slide down his face.

« I love you. »

And K'del loved him back.

Later, dry-eyed but red-cheeked, he went to Iolene's weyr. There were fresh clothes from stores, and a warm body to curl up with; it helped.

But Iolene slept spread-eagled across the bed, and curled up to one side, K'del found it hard to drop off.

Where do we go from here?

Awwww. And Cadejoth makes everything better. Or at least he tries. Whether K'del deserved it or not (a little harsh!?) it's still effed up enough to want to hug the poor baboo Weyrleader. <3 Poor K'del. ._.

I will not.

In fact, I think I'll wait until Turn's End and do it again, in honor of Iovniath's first flight. And then again for your birthday, and Iovniath's second flight, and the anniversary of your betrayal and and and...
