It was in her sleep that Ysavaeth worked best; the vulnerability of slumber allowing the Reachian queen to weave thoughts and opinions into the dream tapestry of her rider's head.

In sleep, Iolene surrendered herself most, particularly the peaceful sleep that generally followed her visits with the Weyrleader's rider; when thoughts of little Iodels and Kasalenes danced in fields was the best time, Ysavaeth had discovered through the last few months, to commune with her rider.

She had realized, months after Impression, when her understanding of the world was more concrete, just how narrow her window might have been -- that this particular girl with the prepossession and intelligence of a highborn lady layered beneath the sweet innocence of her natural personality might not have been available. Somewhere, in her draconic mind, Ysavaeth knew that without Iolene on the sands, she would have made do and found someone else. Someone perhaps not as malleable or consciously avoidant, and at times, while it hurt to realize other weyrling pairs shared different, perhaps much more mutual relationships (the grass sometimes being greener even for dragons), Ysavaeth understood this was how best it worked.

And yet, there was still love, affection, and a blinding loyalty she felt for Iolene and knew, instinctively, was returned. There were still fragmented memories of times when her brokenhearted rider had run to dark corners to cry and that Ysavaeth had been the one to seek. They lingered in Iolene's head as precious snatches of the signs of Ysavaeth's love for her and thus, floated occasionally into the gold's mind as well.

Tonight, however, as the bells of her thoughts took on the tones of a lullaby, there were hiccups to any attempt at subtle weaving. There was a pulsating ball of anger, frustration, betrayal, and, surprising to Ysavaeth, this small flicker of acceptance so tightly bound it took much of the night for the young queen to coax it open.

I'm awake, was the cool thought that suddenly worked its way into her head in the hour just prior to dawn.

A startled silence lasted the breaths where tears were streaming down the sides of Iolene's eyes and onto the pillow she shared with K'del. Her dragon was quiet still, as the goldrider stirred physically, turning to find physical warmth and comfort from the man by her side.

« So you are. »

I'm always awake when you do this.

« But you let me. »

It was the touch of her rider, no doubt, but the coolness, the aloof distance, and the miserable sorrow she wasn't masking tonight, didn't feel right. It was certainly, even for an astute dragon such as Ysavaeth, a revelation in other facets of her rider.

She listened in as the girl trailed kisses against K'del's neck and down onto his naked chest. She observed as those fingers and lowly affectionate murmurs, having learned from nights not spent alone and with teachers far more creative than the Weyrleader's rider, coaxed a protesting, but not really protesting, bedmate awake for another round.

Ysavaeth waited, in that silence Iolene had created -- that kind of silence that hangs with the implications of something unsaid that would be said shortly. Sometime. Later. She could be patient, tending to the needs of her own children.

It would never be the same, this culmination of pleasure and completion, as when they flew together, but for a moment, the coolness of her rider's lingering touch was superceded by a golden bliss that Ysavaeth allowed to wash over her senses, her own neck snaking out briefly to caress her mate's side.

Because I was foolish. Tomorrow, when I sit with you, you'll tell me everything. I'm willing to listen.

Beautifully written, and I love getting to see more of their relationship. But still, that last line very much deserves an "Oh Dear". ;)
