For turns, Nabol Hold has been a bastion of conservative thought and traditions. A women's place is by the hearth, a man's place is at the till (or in the case of the aristocracy, at the helm of politics). Supportive of the Weyr throughout the various changes, including the last leadership turnover, Lord Ustelan has long provided stability to his holders, and while many tongues wag about his lecherous proclivities and love of young, pretty things, it would be hard to find anyone in Nabol's territories who has no affection for their Lord.
In the last few turns, Lord Ustelan has shown up to formal occasions less and less frequently, usually sending along his lovely young wife (less than half his age, you know) Ienavi, or one of his sons or grandsons. He's eighty-five now, after all, and though he's allegedly not entirely senile, his body is less and less able. Ustelan has never named an heir to Conclave, leaving many to hope that he has made private arrangements. After all, the last thing anyone wants is a battle between prospective heirs!
The trouble is that there isn't any clear choice, not really. By rights, the Hold ought to go to Huelet, Ustelan's firstborn son... but at sixty-six, he's no spring chicken himself, and anyway, there are some definite signs that he's not quite with it anymore (probably from a lifetime of overindulging himself). If not Huelet, then, then perhaps his son? But if Huelet was not named heir, why should his son take the role? Why not Ustelan's second son, Bevuel? Or his children? But then again, Bevuel and Huelet are both sons of Marisse, the wife of Ustelan's youth before he was Lord Holder. Perhaps they don't even count at all!
And once you get to that point, there are all kinds of possibilities, even down to some of Ustelan's grandchildren and even great-grandchildren. Everyone has an opinion, and without any indication from Ustelan himself... who decides? The Conclave? And if so, how?
