| It's too bad there aren't more hands. One might think it was just an innocent aside -- a benign encouragement to let a girl feel better about being let down as she was sent on her way. A thoughtless comfort. Mave knew better. She heard the message: find people who can fill roles and there's no way they can ignore you next time. It was a hint, so carefully dropped, as she walked out of the harper classroom. Her mother agreed. As she'd combed Ratha's hair that morning, her mum'd related how her daughter was always so ready to lend a hand. A hand. Like trying your hand at things. She'd done it with the betting, and been average. Even an average performance might lift some spirits. And, lucky for her, she knew some people who were above. |
