It was such a little thing: a pendant made of silver and glass, so fragile and delicate. The glass was shaped into a double helix, both sides filled with a sprinkling of sand. He knew the golden sand - that was from the hatching sands, of that he was sure. The other, he supposed, that rocky, inhospitable stuff, must be from the island Iolene had come from.

Better you had stayed there, he thought to himself, staring down at the pendant in his hands.

It had been his trophy, and now it would be his insurance.

There were few Monaco youths without a firelizard of their own: you could scarcely walk a mile down the beach without stumbling upon a clutch, sometimes, and some kids seemed to take great pleasure in Impressing one after another. Others were more enterprising, and sold the eggs - though I'kris' father had told him that that was for the less fortunate. He should not stoop himself so.

His little blue had been a gift, therefore, bestowed on him on-- which turnday was it? He couldn't remember now. They'd thought it was a bronze egg, but it hadn't been. Young Indakris had been put out and disappointed, but had dutifully Impressed the little creature, and largely ignored him otherwise except when he was useful.

Like now.

He fixed the image in his mind to show the firelizard where to go. Getting him to pick up the pendant was easy; getting him to go to the right spot was less so, but he worked at it.

He'd flown past the other brown's ledge once, weeks and weeks ago. He remembered the pockmarked recesses, the little niches. Any of those would do.

Perhaps it would never need to be used, perhaps the little pendant could sit there, forgotten, forever.

But he doubted it.

If I go down, so do you.

Aw, poor little firelizard! Also, BOO. BAD I'KRIS. No biscuit. No conniving, that's a bad Ikky.

He probably didn't even name it, not really.
