| Thirty, K'del thought, was a nice, solid number. Even. Round. A new decade. A nice, clean slate. They slept late, on the first morning of the turn. K'del rolled over, propping himself up on one arm, to watch Iolene sleep. Now, at this moment, the black ball of forboding that had been following him around for months felt very far away indeed. Instead, there was the woman he cared about, his co-leader, and his determination to make turn thirty a better one. He had quiet hopes that by turn thirty-one they'd be parents together. It had been eleven months, now, since they'd lost the baby, and K'del still thought about her a lot. The milestones she would be hitting. The smiles she would be smiling to entrance her doting parents. The sleepless nights, yes, but also-- all of it. Hopefully, soon, it would be time to try again. It was a new turn for the Weyr, too. This turn, they'd prove that Iolene was the Weyrwoman High Reaches needed. He'd be more patient with her, and they'd decide things together. New paths, perhaps, but solid, well thought out ones. In a few sevens, Rielsath's clutch would be on the sands, and there would be Candidates. Perhaps by the end of the turn, there would be more clutches: four queens was really more than any Interval Weyr needed, but it would probably help morale. Especially after that lost clutch. Oh Io, he thought. It would be hard for this turn not to be better than the last. She slept on, oblivious to those heavy thoughts lingering in his mind. He reached out to push back a strand of hair, smiling as snuggled in against his hand. Io. It would be her turnday, soon. Maybe they'd start baking that baby, then. Or maybe later. It didn't matter. It was going to be a good turn, he just knew it. |

This is so, utterly bittersweet. Mostly sweet. ~
