| She gave up the adventure she wanted, and now Jolie was plagued forever with the question of What If?.... She was assigned to some backwater hold, ever since they sent out complaints to Keogh about some thefts. As a newly-minted guard, she had no say-so, especially since her guard father pulled a whole lot of weight around there. Her brothers - Alan, Eran, Jolan, and Lio - all guards, just like her - got all the good assignments, because they were men. They got the chases, the heists, the important shit. What did Jolie get - even if she had trained just as hard as Eran, or could fight better than Alan, or could do anything better than any of them? She gets dropped to some backwater, out-of-the-way minor hold that was worried about their precious dresses being stolen. Dresses. It was a female solution to a female problem, according to Jothan, Jolie's father. What would the boys know about dresses? What would Jolie, too? Solving the case was easy enough in a couple of sevendays - the culprit was a twelve-turn old girl with light, clever fingers and the face of an angel - but while Jolie waited for her reassignment elsewhere.... ...none came. When a message did come, it was for her to remain on post until further notice. The holder there has expressed a fondness for your work ethic Yeah. The last guard assigned here died of old age in his post. Jolie found herself staring back at a dull life watching for future dress thieves and garden vandals till she was old and grey. It was the worst possible future she could ever have. It was also the perfect maneuver to keep her out of the way for her male-dominated family. That message pretty much summed up what she already knew: You are not needed here. Stay out of the way and we will give you a quiet, easy life. Fuck. They never knew her, least of all her father. Quiet and easy was never in her vocabulary. She wanted action, and she knew that somehow, her true existence was just waiting out there. Not here in some out of the way place like forgotten laundry. And so, perhaps it's fate that months later, a familiar face just happens to show up in this backwater hold, looking for her. Perhaps it's fate that he had tried for her at her home place, only to be pointed here where she was posted. Perhaps it's fate that he walked right up to her, lamenting about how much he missed her and about how he was determined not to part ways with her ever again - they were kindred souls, after all. How could he dare to leave her to this life? He talked about how a big heist had lost him his crew some time back. He talked about how Kinervus and Bareta got caught and was sent to the hard labor of the mines, and how a smithcrafter they were robbing managed to wound Yovis in the leg and ended his life before he himself died to injuries. That he was on the run and alone once more, but that maybe - just maybe - he could get a second start at life and do it right. He could do it right with her. No more heists, right? It was completely Kin and Yovis's fault, not his! With his dashing smile and cavalier ways, who could believe otherwise of him? He was a man looking to start again, and Jolie's feelings for him hadn't dimmed at all since she had let him walk out of her life turns ago. Jolie choose family over herself last time, and look at what all it got her. This time? Obvious. As for the dashing trader, he knew he had her before he even opened his mouth. She was a girl after his own heart, destined for all he could teach her. She was just waiting for the right one to unleash her, and who better than him? Of course it pissed him off that he lost his crew, but he'll build again in time. His life will get back to normal, in time. All he needs is the right trigger to make that happen, and she was always - to him - the Bonnie to his Clyde. |
