She couldn't sleep after the party, but it wasn't because of the steady stream of revellers stumbling in drunkenly all night, or whispering or snoring nearby. It wasn't the information she was trying to process and file away, align into her understanding so she could continue building the picture of this place; the map that would eventually show her the path she should follow. Her mind buzzed like a hive of angry bees - she'd never sort out her own plans in this state, let alone how one should react to everything as a former resident of Crom.

It was all she could do to seem calm, to lie on her side and tuck her arm under her pillow, jaw set. Staring into the dark, Giorda's voice echoed, rang in her ears: "...since those thieves used them to pickpocket their livelihood." She couldn't stop hearing that word, the way she'd emphasized it. "Thieves." No less harsh than those spitting exiles, she'd noticed. The tone was familiar - unwanted. Distrusted. Scapegoated, as her uncle had said, only once.

She wished she'd drank a few more glasses of wine a little more quickly. Even a hangover while on duty would be worth quick, dreamless sleep. She dug her fingernails into her palms, squeezed her eyes shut, and willed her lean body to stop shaking. There was nothing to do with this fury now. But someday, there would be. Someday soon.
