Description
Platinum blonde curls fall in a tumble to the middle of this young woman's back, left free to end up in her face or tucked behind an ear, entirely unruly. Her skin is not quite as pale as her hair is, touched with a hint of color to give her an all around tone of warmth, a blush of life and vitality. There is something ethereal to the delicacy of her features, light and so very distinctly feminine as they are; high cheekbones, long eyelashes, well proportioned lips and nose. Blue eyes are vibrant, the color of summer's ocean in tropical waters. She is a slender creature, her curves hinted at rather than being pronounced, a light bone structure giving her a touch of something further delicate. There is no height to counteract this, either - while she isn't an absolutely tiny miniature person, she's certainly well below average. Not quite all elbows and knees any longer, she has filled out enough that she looks more adult than child - still, a good guess at her age would place her in her seventeenth or eighteenth turn. She's got a few more years to go until she's done with growing.
WYSK
- Damaris was raised in a cothold not terribly far from Tillek by a foster family.
- She is the daughter of two (unwed) Journeyman Harpers, Eriss and Daryn.
- She came to High Reaches Weyr with her father about two years ago (he was posted here); when he left, she stayed.
- She's kitchen staff, prone to being soft on those who come looking for treats, and looking the other way when it comes to something being snagged that she's working on.
- She's generally quite friendly and social. It makes her get less work done than perhaps she might otherwise, but she's usually well able to talk herself out of any trouble that causes her.
History
Once upon a time in a far-away land, a daughter was born to a pair of harpers who were overjoyed to have her, and the three of them settled at Harper Hall while the little girl grew up and they all lived happily ever after. It's a story Damaris sometimes told herself growing up, wondering after her could-have would-have should-haves. Instead, what actually happened is that her parents continued doing their own thing (they weren't wed) up until the point at which Eriss (her mother) was unable to travel, at which point she went back to the cothold (that was beholden to Tillek) where she was born, had her baby, and then left.
Fostered quite literally from day one (thankfully, she and the sister who was only a few months older than she was got along very well) as part of a large family, Damaris was always just a little bit on the edges of everything - a fact which could be blamed more on her than the rest of her family (they really did love her as one of their own). She did not have an unhappy childhood, though the occasions in which one or the other of her parents visited (it was always one or the other, never both at the same time) always threw her off a great deal. It made life difficult for weeks afterwards, but it always eventually settled back down.
There was talk about taking her to Harper Hall when she was of the appropriate age, but when Eriss realized that she would have to put up with the girl far more regularly, that ended that plan. The older she got the less often she saw her mother and the more often she saw her father, and life went forward without much in the way of anything unusual. Bigger things were - well, bigger than she was.
Growing up, Damaris did pick up some musical ability and training from her reasonably capable actual parents, but primarily she learned what most cothold girls end up learning - how to tend a family and cook and...all of those other domestic tasks. The family she lived with was involved in the winemaking process of Tillek, and so she learned a great deal about that, as well.
Unfortunately, Damaris did turn into a teenager, and she was a teenager who felt a little bit at odds with her current arrangement. She and her foster parents started to have difficulties. She and her foster siblings started to have difficulties. She was fifteen when her father (Daryn) came through, picked her up, and brought her to the Weyr with him, where he was spending a turn assigned. He got her settled in working in the kitchens, and while it was perhaps harder work than she would have liked, it was better than going back to the cothold, especially once she'd settled in and gotten attached to being in the Weyr.
