It was just after dinner, and Devaki was seated in the Great Hall, Vinien cradled in the crook of his arm. Issedi was napping upstairs, and the boy was the focus of his attention.

It took a moment for the words to penetrate; he didn't really think of Iolene as the Weyrwoman. To him, she was the girl who insisted on tagging after them when they went fishing. The same girl who punched Xoami when Devaki had come back injured. The same girl who was his first...

"I hear it's the second woman who's been found dead in the Weyrleader's weyr."

Seani. No. Focus. Io. What about--

"What about Iolene?" He was standing, roaring. Vinien was screaming in his arms, and people were staring at him. He didn't care. He didn't--

"Devaki." It was Braeden, and he was lifting his nephew from the former exile's arms, a hand on his elbow, guiding his brother-in-law into his office.

There weren't many details, but Braeden told him what he knew. That foul play was suspected. That K'del was gone. Then he left.

Did Braeden know? Suspect that Devaki had loved Iolene in a way that he could never love his wife?

Devaki picked up a small paperweight, hefting it in his hand. It would have been a satisfying subject of his anger, but... clarity flowed over him like water. There was a much better target. He knew exactly who was responsible for this, even if he hadn't committed the act personally. He would pay.
