Prologue

No one knew what to make of the little brown baby bundled in the arms of the wild-eyed girl. For the longest time none of the exiles could convince the girl that the baby was safe and no harm would come to her or the child. It came out later that Lord Crom demanded this girl-Vayvn, to take the child, his illegitimate son, from his mother and hide him somewhere safe. A wild turn of events ended this young, foolish nursemaid in the wrong place at the wrong time. A good story the exiles thought but Lord Com did not have skin of the color klah nor eyes of jet black. Vayvn held to that story her whole life and no one could sway her. The boy, Darshaw, was safe, that's all that mattered.

Description

Background

Darshaw, Celadion's father would have been happy if he would have known his long efforts at continuing his line had actually worked. But he was old when he married his third wife and passed before Shishi even knew she was carrying his baby. For Shishi , his passing was a blessing. She had spent her best years putting up with the old man for the single purpose of carrying his child. She thought herself free of the burden of obligation and that she could enjoy the life of many widows, in the company of other women but it was not to be. So it was with deep bitterness she carried the child to term and did not hide her anger that the child was Darshaw's much desired boy-child. Who knows what sort of life Celadion would have led if his mother had lived longer than his first year.

As neither Darshaw nor Shishi had any surviving family, Darshaw's friend Harton took in the boy. Being one of the elders alongside Darshaw for a great many years, he felt the joy of seeing the man's offspring like a brother might. Harton understood his friend's need to pass on his bloodline, he was unable to father any children himself although his wife had tried valiantly risked her life time and time again without success. Celadion became the much needed bandage between Harton and Velles.

Celadion grew up with much love in the home of his adopted parents. A fine line between spoiling the boy and raising him to be dependant and hopefully in line to one day be an elder as well, granted he follow the right path. Always that right path shown to him and it never seemed that that road was ever easy. Even from an early age he was left to make his choice and pay the price for the mistakes he made. His parents were kind but firm in this education.

They made a fine match for him, with a girl of the blood, Uhlre. The union was perfect in every way, except that Uhlre was spoiled and willful and hated anything that she could not control. Celadion fell into that basket of fish. Also, Uhlre fell in love every other day with someone and something new. The right path was to make it work and that path was long and hard. Married at sixteen, he was assured by not only his parents but other elders that these things would work their way out of her system. Get her with babies and that would settle her right down. Uhlre hated him more each time he attempted such things. Being married was one thing, she had her own home from under the thumb of her parents and sisters and brothers afterall. Laying with Celadion was out of the question. She convinced him to make a show of it, at least until she was no longer 'afraid' of the intimacy. Forcing himself on anyone was out of the question so he agreed reluctantly. This worked for almost a year, until she ended up pregnant. The father, she confessed tearfully to Cela, was a close relation. But they were in love. (Should that make it better?)

She and the baby died in childbirth. Choked with guilt for allowing it to happen, the elders did warn of the 'thin' blood, he cornered the responsible young man and beat him senseless. Too little, too late of course, but it was hushed up more or less because the man in question had a wife too and no one wanted the elders hearing of this sort of disgrace.
