Description

He's a tall, lanky young man. If it weren't for the life of a dragonrider, he might have been skinny. As it is, years of training has wrapped muscle around his whipcord frame. His face is likewise slim, with almond-shaped eyes, a rounded nose and a smattering of freckles that splay across his cheeks. His complexion is warm, which matches dark eyes and dark hair. He wears his hair just above his collar. It's thick and tends to lie in an unruly manner that somehow suits him.

His jacket is a bomber style with a cross-shoulder latch that is left open when not outside. Beneath it, is a simple brown shirt. His pants are made out of well-fitting bit simple thick brown wherhide that looks well worn and well-used. Boots are black, and likewise scuffed and well-worn.

  • He likes rules.Overly laid-back people tend to rub him the wrong way.

History

Ihelani was born in Bitra, the son of a notorious high-stakes gambler. He and his three brothers (one older, two younger) grew up almost entirely under their father's wing. Their mother had grown tired of Quivaris' compulsive gambling and had left when Ihelani was 13. In the beginning, Ihelani idolized his father. Quivaris taught his sons everything he knew about swindling, card counting and general scamming.

It didn't take too long for the shine to wear off this way of life. He watched his father swindle a young couple out of almost all their marks. Then, his father cheated a peddler, and a Herder apprentice. When his father was just cheating other gamblers, it didn't bother him, as it was more a test of wits and skill than something immoral. The cheating of innocent people did not sit well with the teenaged Lani.

As a result, Ihelani decided that things needed to stop. Bitra's guard captain at the time, a tough, no-nonsense woman named Jiryel began to notice Ihelani's growing disdain for the scene in Bitra. She had recently arrived herself, taking over for a guard captain who was rather crooked. She recruited him into the ranks of the guards, and he began to train as soon as he turned 15.

Ihelani's life from that point on was spent cracking down on the underbelly. In Bitra, that was no easy task. Telling a hardened Bitran dealer that cheating someone in a runner race is unfair is a dangerous thing indeed, and he often found himself faced with a great deal of hostility for calling them out. After all, what power does a young punk guard have over a well-known and tricky gambler? It was a little like the paperboy trying to take down Al Capone

His father was not happy with his choice in careers to say the least, and eventually the tensions grew to a point where father and son began avoiding each other. That conflict coupled with the slow loss of his anonymity made his job that much more dangerous. So when a Searchrider came from Benden Weyr and singled him out, he accepted. Being a dragonrider wasn't something he had ever considered, but he thought a change of scenery would do him good.

Fate intervened, as fate often does, and he Impressed a bronze dragon named Hasarth. The next several Turns were formative for the young bronzerider. He found an outlet for his sense of responsibility. He did however, develop a bit of a fixation on rules and regulations, and developed a lack of tolerance for those who didn't follow them. That caused him to butt heads with people on a few occasions. Whether it was maturity or the effect of his dragon, I'lani gradually grew more uptight. That made him a man to rely on, but in the process, he lost the ability to relax.

The tension only got worse and worse as time passed. Despite spending nearly ten Turns at Benden, he never really found his place. So, it was on the recommendation of his weyrleader that he considered a transfer to High Reaches Weyr.
