Living Cavern, High Reaches Weyr

Stalactites hang high above this enormous cavern like a jagged chandelier or an inversion of the Spires themselves, but shadows cling to them instead of light. Below lie great tables arranged in rows, each large enough to serve a fighting wing, while in the nooks and alcoves around the cavern's edge sit more sensibly-sized tables, from six- and eight-seaters down to intimate spots for just a couple of diners. The only really open space is around the kitchen entrance, smelling of food and rarely quiet, and by the nearby serving tables with their long buffet of the day's offerings.

Tapestries on the smooth walls -- some faded and others newly woven -- only slightly mute the sea of sound when a meal is in full swing, but they add cheerfulness augmented by the glowlight from wall sconces and the centerpieces of each table. Still, shadows always creep along the ceiling and into the mouths of the exits -- the myriad small hallways at one end of the cavern and, at the other, the twisting tunnel to the bowl near an array of coathooks and and hatracks -- and late at night, when the glows are allowed to dim, the chamber can seem very dark indeed.

Hana has found a corner in the living cavern - or at least, a side table not filled with people. The holder woman has the remains of a meal in front of her, and has settled back to people watch and to savour a mug of hot tea between both hands.

Kaeden is only just getting the cavern for a late dinner and takes some extra time going through what's left. By the time he's started looking for a chair, his plate is filled with... mostly bread. The spice covered remains of some sort of fried potato dish. A single leaf of lettuce. He didn't even bother with cutlery. The candidate makes his way down the outer edge of tables and spots Hana, and if there's a long pause between spotting her and moving over to join her table, he has some good reasons. "Keeping busy?"

Hana tilts her head slightly towards the familiar voice, then points even while keeping both hands around the mug of tea. "If the word 'suitor' or the word 'date' with anyone else's name comes from your lips, Candidate Kaeden, I will step on your feet so many times during our dance that you will be permanently lamed." Not a threat, maybe. She's just saying.

Kaeden sets down his plate, then holds out his hands as he takes a seat. "I wouldn't dream of it, Hana," he assures her with an almost rakish sort of smile. He starts tearing one of the bread rolls into smaller pieces, with which he starts scooping up the fried potato bits. "I'd be lying if I said I hadn't heard those forbidden words come out of other people's mouths lately, though. You're turning into quite the heartbreaker," he informs her as he pops the bread and potato into his mouth.

Hana closes her eyes, and takes a very deep breath, before letting it out slowly. Then, with a slightly fixed grin, she says, "Wouldn't dream? Now my feelings are hurt. Good partner. You would get a cookie if I had one, and that isn't my intent!" Oops, that forced cheerful calm slipped slightly towards the end.

For a long moment, Kaeden's only reply to that is to arch a brow as he just looks at Hana. Then he picks up his single piece of lettuce and starts nibbling at it before stating, "Two guys I'm a candidate with have an interest in you. So for one thing, I wouldn't want to... I don't know, get in the way or something." He drops the sad bit of green back on his plate. "And a second thing, I don't have a freaking clue what's going to happen in the next couple sevens. It's hardly fair to be putting all these weird expectations on you and stuff, don't you think?" He pauses in the act of tearing off another chunk of bread. "Actually, it really wasn't fair of them to do that, either, was it." He fixes her with a long look, then resumes with the bread, if with slower movements. "Are you okay with... with stuff?"

"I have two... boys - cute, yes, and friendly and whom I enjoy talking with - trying to set me up on a date. To a party I've already said I'm going to with Lady Issedi and Lord Devaki. Trying to set me up on a date with each other. When they may - or may not - end up with new duties that preclude any sort of 'suiting'. At this point, there is no getting in the way of anything, as I have turned down all offers. Not to mention, I'm not looking for a suitor." Grumble, grumble, grumble, goes the lady in waiting before she takes a sip of her rapidly cooling tea.

Kaeden manages to get a piece of bread free and uses it to slowly gather another small collection of potato pieces. Before pinching it into the bread, though, he stops and frowns across the table at Hana. "Nothing wrong with that. I mean... we're still so sharding young." Potato is successfully gathered, and the whole thing is popped into his mouth. He's soon reaching to fill a glass with water, though, to help wash it down more quickly. Once that's done, he leans in slightly, giving her a look that's both concerned and slightly intrigued. "Or is it 'cause they're boys? Didn't peg you for the sly type, but if you are... that's cool. Just wanted to say."

Hana wrinkles her nose, though there is a hint of actual, genuine amusement that is finally breaking free. "I'm here for as long as you were, Kaed. Or they are. That's not any sort of time to figure that out. And the distance. Besides. Bad timing. Really, really, really bad timing. Which... probably isn't their fault," Maybe, "But it does rather make me grumpy." There is a pause. "... forgive me for taking it out on you?"

By Kaeden's smile, the forgiveness is very much a given, though he states it anyway, following another bite of bread. "You're free to take stuff out on me anytime you want, Hana." He pauses for more water, and to wipe his mouth with a napkin. "If you want, I can ask them to back off. I can't promise they won't track you down for dances or something, though, when the time comes."

Hana shakes her head, "From all the rumors - and I still have to place bets with... was it Mave? - things will be coming ahead soon enough. Plenty of time for dances all around, and then we'll all have our separate paths, one way or another." There is a faint darkness behind the words, before she shakes her head, "Besides - I am looking far too forward to the Party - and all the dances - to possibly put a damper on it. I've promised out at least four dances, and hopefully more to come if the harpers drum true."

"Well, if I'm able, I would like to add at least one more name to your dance card," Kaeden says with an easy grin as he leans back. That piece of lettuce is between his fingers again. He looks at it, grimaces, then balls it up before popping it in his mouth. It totally counts as a veggie, right? "So you guys are all headed back to the Hold soon, I take it?"

"Oh, you're already included. You said yes when we first got here, and now you're stuck," she teases Kaed, before hmming thoughtfully and nodding. "I believe the road repair should be mostly done by then," before frowning and actually paying attention to the other's plate. "... you are eating something other than just bread, right?"

Kaeden quickly points to what's left of the spiced potato stuff on his plate, though at this point it's mostly just the little crispy bits. "Three different foods!" Even if two of them are in that starch category. "There were a bunch of desserts leftover, but I'm not in the mood." Those very last bits of potato are scooped into one of the pieces of bread, all soon polished off and washed down. "Still enjoying working for the Lady?"

Hana shakes her head, "Have you considered a proper salad, or something meat-like?" she asks before inclining her head some. "She's still a joy to work for - even if she loves all colors of pink," and takes hours to decide and get ready on things. "It has been good that she has been able to.. hm. Spread her wings, a bit?"

"I'd have to go into the kitchen to get it, and I've been in that sharding kitchen for more of the afternoon than I would have liked already," Kaeden informs Hana with a wry smile. "I'll go back when it's quiet." At this point, there's just the second bread roll on the guy's plate, but he leaves it be for now. "That's true. I know how good I've felt getting away from the Hold a while to see more of the world. Can only imagine what it's like for her. Do the kids like the Weyr?"

"Vinein's really too young, but I think so," Hana says after a moment, speaking of the Blooded couple's first and only child. There is a hint of grin, as she further admits, "He at least enjoyed the bathing pools, though we had to be careful about the heat."

"Ah... right, right," Kaeden replies as he leans in on his elbows. "To be honest, I never followed any of that crowd much. What do the high and mighty care about little ol' me, right?" His grin would indicate he's only teasing, but he doesn't linger on the topic. "I think I saw a pool of some sort near the dragon infirmary area. Maybe he could paddle around there or something."

Hana chuckles, and shakes her head, before admitting, "I think he deafened Waki and Alida once he was tired of splashing about, but he was definitely going for a while."

Kaeden nods his head a couple times, then takes a moment to look around the cavern, then over toward the kitchen. "I just meant to avoid the heat, though that might be on the too cold side," he starts to say as he turns back to Hana. "Plus, there's that whole part where it's a dragon infirmary," he adds a second later, grinning.

"Right - and by the way, you aren't allowed to get stepped on when the Hatching comes. I am hoping the babies aren't big enough, but this also means stay out from under the mamas," Hana teases, before shaking her head and looking at her plate. "... I should stop procrastinating. I have some sewing to do before bed; I'll see you later?"

"I will be sure to warn the dragons away from stepping on me," Kaeden promises with a hand over his heart. When Hana says she's going to take off, Kaed pushes away from the table. "Yeah, I think I'll find something to put on the bread. Then probably tuck in for the night." He gets to his feet and picks up his plate. "See you around, Hana. If any other guys try to give you trouble, you just knee them in the junk, right?"

Hana gives a gasp, then gayly laughs, "...They aren't that annoying... just enough to drive a girl to drink," she offers over her shoulder, before swishing away, leaving behind the remains of her meal in thoughtless habit.

This was a fun scene - and it let Hana realize that she's letting other issues wrap her far up into the drama! Kaed gets extra points for letting her spaz at him.
