| The days following the flight were a whirlwind of... everything, really. K'del tried to swallow back his unhappiness; for Iolene, he pretended everything was fine, that he wasn't concerned with what she was doing, doing to his Weyr. What she had done, and what was coming. It wasn't easy. Dealing with the other Weyrs was hard, too. Again and again he had to point out that he'd had no way of knowing that Ysavaeth would rise so quickly, that he'd certainly never intended it. "No one can make a queen rise to their own schedule," he pointed out. "And even if I could, or she could, or anyone could, don't you think I'd wait until it was less astoundingly surprising?" He was surprised. And astounded. He worried that it was unhealthy for Ysavaeth to be producing eggs again so quickly, though logically he knew queens could produce forty in one clutch, and she'd be doing far less than that over a longer time. Still, it worried him. Would she rise this often forever? Or had she pushed herself into it, somehow? The flight itself was a dreamy, hazy memory. Too much wine and too much sun, he supposed. Cadejoth certainly seemed smug and happy enough, and K'del... He was glad to keep his knot, of course he was. But he no longer knew what to expect from Iolene, and those strange ideas of hers that had seemed unnerving when spoken about in the abstract now seemed startling and problematic in this much more real situation. He hadn't lied when he said he loved her. Well. He didn't think he'd lied. He cared. He absolutely cared for her. But this... He worried. Maybe he worried too much; maybe it was all going to be fine, and she'd prove them all wrong. It wasn't that she wasn't capable, after all. "She'll have my support," he told the other Weyrleaders, one by one. "And Lujayn's. Change is always uncertain, but I don't believe there's anything to be concerned about. It's a positive thing, really, that High Reaches has confirmed Weyrleaders again." And, "The dragons know best. Isn't that what we always say? We need to trust them. Ysavaeth rose first: that's our custom. That's the way it works. I didn't know it was coming, and neither did Iolene, but we're certainly going to make the best of it." He hated it. He hated that, once again, people disapproved of his actions, of him. Thought negatively of him. Believed ill of him. I only ever try and do my best, and somehow, it's never enough. Somehow, something always gets in the way, and it's my fault. It wasn't fair. |
