Clutch 30

The Morning After Egg

Huge and hard to miss, right there in the middle of the clutch, this egg has got to be one of the most disgusting ever laid. It's that orangey-yellowy color peculiar to vomit, and is splotched all over with hints of other colors: tiny round green dots here, bean-shaped darker reddish spots there. There's something about the texture of the shell that makes the whole thing seem to glisten wetly when the light hits it. Yuck.

/Crack/. It happens so suddenly, in the end, that it seems to leave the hatchling within in a state of confused surprise. The Morning After Egg breaks into two distinct pieces, which promptly fall into shards upon the sand below. The blue within? He blinks, several times, slowly, then takes a hesitant, wobbling step forward. Well. If he's /out/...

Ride The Wave Blue

An indigo wave crashes over the craggy ridges of this mid-sized blue, sending tendrils of bluish purple towards the inky depths of his shadowed belly and haunches, where tensing muscles offer flashes of brighter color like cavorting tropical fish. Paler aqua bubbles around the tips of those sharp points as they make their way from his head to the tip of his shorter-than-usual tail; across his wingsails, shades of blue-upon-blue wash from edge to edge, seeming to endlessly shift as he moves, barely constrained by silver-touched pinions. Despite the pointedness of those ridges, he's built to lean lines, light padding softening what might otherwise be sharp edges - a theme carried through to the boneless relaxation that marks the lazy movements of his head, not to mention his languorous gait.

Temperament

Life is an adventure, as far as Akuath is concerned, but not one that needs to be sought: everything comes exactly as it ought to, when it ought to, how it ought to. It's this zen attitude to life that makes your blue such a pleasure, H'dur... at least, except when it's driving you absolutely mad. You can't rush Akuath, and you can't make him see concerns or problems, not as long as there's sky ahead, and you're both still together. His attitude is infectious, though, and you may well find yourself falling in alongside his pace - and in doing so, it may well become just that little bit easier to enjoy life for what it is. « It's life, dude, » he'll tell you, « It is what it is. »

None of this is to say that Akuath does not have his excitable moments. He's a lover of thrills, always anticipating the possibility of something new... even if he never goes looking for it. In some ways, this gives him a commonality with some of his siblings, including Zaxameth and Liniath, who share a certain zest for life. Akuath is a speed junkie, though, far more than his siblings, and his greatest pleasures involve exploring new thermals, letting them push him faster and faster until it might seem like he'll never be able to stop. The perfect thermal - the perfect ride - is an intangible, but still thought-about goal for Akuath, albeit one he never really expects to achieve. There's pleasure in every ride, though, enthusiasm he'll be unable to hold back: « Righteous! Totally righteous, yeah! »

Though otherwise not quite as energetic as some of his clutchmates, Akuath is an enthusiastic weyrling, and will soak up knowledge like a sponge. He loves stories, and is likely to press his weyrlingmasters - or anyone else who happens to be nearby - for tales of their exploits, to be acted out at a later date. His interpretations tend to focus less upon the words and more on the /sensations/ of everything - they may not make all that much sense, but there's no denying his enthusiasm in the retelling: « He was like... whoa! And then we were like... whoa! » His laconic tone may make him come across as less intelligent than some others, but the truth is that while Akuath is certainly not much of an academic, he /is/ a collector of wisdom; he's definitely not as dumb as he might sometimes seem, it's just that his understanding might be on a different level, focused on different things than, say, Teivoth's love for the quick joke. Even as a weyrling, he's likely to come out with the occasional deeply profound remark, something that may surprise even you - though not forever. With Akuath in your head, that wisdom will quickly become part of your life in general, providing a backbone for your transition into this new, shared, life.

Like most young dragons, flight will be an important, and exciting, milestone for Akuath. You'll have to be careful, H'dur, to make sure he doesn't attempt to give it a try on his own, for Akuath has an independent streak that tends to make him more inclined to sink or swim on his own merits. It's quite unusual for him to push boundaries in such a way, but there are some things that, quite simply, he sees differently to other dragons, and his independence in this manner is one of these things. Nonetheless, Akuath sees himself as part of a bigger family, and cares very much for the dragons around him, something reminiscent of the way his father sees the weyr as his pack. For Akuath, it's something that doesn't even need saying: it just /is/. He's inclined to cheerlead for those around him, and that includes you, H'dur. « You so totally rocked, dude, » he might say, or, « Awesome, mini-man, awesome! »

Most things are awesome, as far as Akuath is concerned, and there are occasions when this can be too much, or even downright problematic. He thinks everything will work out; he thinks hanging in there will solve all problems. He's wrong. Not always, and perhaps not even often, but those times will come, and he will insist on being blind to them until there is absolutely no way around it. In some ways, he will always be running from hard truths: he'll go fly, he'll get some thrills, he'll avoid thinking about things that disrupt his worldview. You'll have to support him through these times, H'dur, like he will support you - in his own way. His support is unquestioning, even when he's pretending so hard that nothing is the matter.

Again like his father, Akuath takes great pleasure in children, and might regularly be found down by the lake serving as a climbing frame and playmate. His tendency towards the thrills in life might result in some racing hearts for the parents and guardians keeping an eye on the situation, however - something Akuath seems enormously detached about. « Let 'em try, dude. Can't hold on to them forever, » he might say... which is hardly going to comfort anyone else. But Akuath wouldn't /actually/ let harm come to anyone: he enjoys them far too much. Should you ever have children of your own, he will adore them without question, though, again, his parenting tips may well be inclined towards the overly relaxed... still, he always means well.

A hedonist, inclined to enjoy life as much as he possibly can, perhaps it's no wonder that Akuath is distinctly interested in the greens - and eager for you to enjoy your own sexuality at the same time. He'll chase regularly, often using his knowledge of the thermals above High Reaches to advantage; he does not tend to form lasting bonds with the greens he catches, though, preferring to enjoy the ride, and then move on to something new as soon as it has finished. He's zen in defeat, too, not registering disappointment too long before moving on: it happens, no biggie.

He's a natural guide, mentor and teacher, your Akuath: attributes that he will show increasingly as he gets older, part and parcel of his natural wisdom. His worldview may seem frustratingly narrow sometimes, and his laid-back nature almost too much, but Akuath knows what he's doing. He knows you, too: he knows - and loves - every part of you, every gift and every flaw, and will encourage you in everything you do. You'll never understand everything about each other, but in the end, you don't need to, not as long as you can ride that wave of life together, and trust each other to keep things straight. He's your other half - it's as simple as that.

Public Impression Message

Despite his continued exploration of the sands, there's no real haste from the Ride the Wave Blue Hatchling, though his eyes betray some agitation, whirling red as candidate after candidate is considered and discarded. Finally, backtracking past some giggling girls from the lower caverns, his stubby tail twitching thoughtfully, he seems to find /something/. He takes a few steps, then a few more, then alters his path entirely for a final time, as he meets for the first time the gaze of his one-and-only: his Shad.

Private Impression Message

« Shaaaaaaaad. » It's your name, first, followed almost instantly by a rolling wave that carries you along, apparently content for you to catch up before anything else follows. « Shaaaadster. » Where did the sands disappear to? Where is the heat, the noise? Left behind is nothing but coolness, and a sense of utter zen that expands throughout you until there's no room left for anticipation or concern. « H'dur. » He - it is a he, isn't it? How did you know that? - seems to like this version of your name less than the rest, somehow, but it hardly matters. « Got you, dude. Name's Akuath. Time for some food, maybe? » His eyes meet yours, suddenly as blue as his hide, and for all the hunger shared between you, it's a moment of pure peace.

Mindvoice

Akuath's mental voice rolls in waves of cool, refreshing touches, reminiscent of the ocean long before he's actually seen it for himself. His mental 'smell' is even faintly salty, with an even fainter whiff of seaweed and fish, and this will often lurk around the edges of your consciousness even when the two of you are not actively talking. Though he will occasionally communicate with only these watery sensations (usually when encouraging you to be calm), most of the time, words are a big thing for him. He's laconic in voice and tone, extending his vowels and sounding undeniably lazy in the process, even when he's excited. He's also a big user of nicknames, coming up with different ones for most of the people around you both - and you're no exception to that, for he has no particular interest in what your /real/ name is. And exactly where he got some of his choice phrases? You'll never, ever know.

Itchyspots

Despite his laid-back nature, Akuath is fastidious about his appearance, and really does not like getting dirty. Oiling is unsurprisingly, then, a favourite activity of his. He gets the most itchy around the tips of his pinions, and the craggy rises of his neckridges; these will need dedicated attention on a regular basis, even well into adulthood.

Dragon Inspiration:

Akuath was based on the sport of surfing, and, in particular, the character of Dude Crush from the 2003 Pixar film 'Finding Nemo'. Surfing was first pioneered by the Polynesians, and rose to prominence as a sport beginning in the early 1900s. A distinct culture - one well known to most of us through pop culture references - grew up around it, focusing on a relaxed, zen-like attitude and a love of thrills. These attributes were used in the sea turtle character of Dude Crush in 'Finding Nemo', and from these two sources, were built into your Akuath. His name is from the Hawaiian phrase 'Ku'u aku', which means 'relax'.
