It wasn't heat that was burning up all the air and flaring the colour too bright to recognise. Not heat, not exactly, but 'heat' was still the best name H'kon could find for it. Some unearthly heat that made the cool give way to crackling, and took much of the feeling out of his communications with Arekoth.

He'd been bad enough, missing the first mock Fall - broody, pouty, frustrated. But this? This worse thing, this had been brought on by the queens. No, that was wrong, not brought on by them. It had been H'kon himself who'd brought it on, hadn't it? He'd asked too much of the brown, and there were things that dragon instinct would not let them give, nor fight. The queens were what actualised it, what sharpened Arekoth's protest to the inaction. But H'kon knew the route was him.

It was not a thing he greatly enjoyed either. It went against everything of how he was raised, all he'd been taught. But it was right. It was right that kept him from some other home, that bound him here at the Weyr, that made the course of action clear, and that forced that burn through his link to his dragon every time one of the queens would exert their pressure.

So Arekoth would pitch and roil and H'kon would hold steady until all things were right again.
