Inviere
Description
Inviere is tall. Okay? She's tall. To be fair, she looks taller than she really is -- the net effect of lean grace stacked on a dense, wiry frame -- but at nearly 6', she's got some height even by Pernese standards. Though somewhere in her mid-20s, she straddles a fine line between "lissome" and "bony": she's not particularly full-chested, and the long lines of her narrow waist just barely camber into unremarkable hips. But she /owns/ her altitude: nothing in her near-perfect posture, in the cant of her wide-set, steel-grey eyes, betrays uncertainty. A long, narrow nose and bowed lips framed by prominent cheekbones and a strong, pointed chin paint an angular, almost unattractive picture marked by too much salience. But there's no argument to be brooked with its symmetry, nor with the immaculate condition of her peachy pink skin. And make no mistake: girl is /serious/ about the wavy style of her sandy, shoulder-length brown hair, the imperious shape of her eyebrows, that practiced dimpled smirk. Maybe she's not TRYING to get noticed? But she definitely EXPECTS to be.
Though simple as cuts and fabrics go, Inviere's attire is of rich earthtones that compliment her coloring: a fitted vest of pine green emphasizes the comfortable looseness of her collared, cream-colored blouse. The shirt is tucked neatly into the waist of sandy brown trousers, themselves tucked into knee-high leather boots that, while dyed an attractive, saturated chocolatey hue, have probably seen better days. A High Reaches Weyr knot affixed to her left shoulder is the outfit's only adornment.
WYSK
- Originally from Misty Hold, a minor seahold in Tillek's neighborhood.
- Apparently has some blood connection to Ysave, Lady Tillek's Wicked Stepmother (tm); may have some relationship to that whole Edeline mess. Holdbred types may know there was a falling out between Inviere and her father, Holder at Misty, over shenanigans with one of Edeline's relatives. Big scandal in Hold social circles, but probably not so much at the Weyr.
- Initially put to work at HRW as a stablehand. Yeah. A frickin' STABLEHAND. Eventually moved to more innocuous lower caverns work.
- Recently Searched by Leova's Vrianth. Yeah, seriously.
History
Inviere was born and raised at Misty Hold, the third child of five born to Vassem, Misty's Holder, and his wife Irina. Although by no means as large or prestigious as neighboring Tillek, Misty is a seahold of some repute and Vassem is considered a wealthy man -- and so Inviere was groomed for her inevitable status as a debutante. Her upbringing followed much the same course as that of other desirable young socialites: a classical education and private lessons at the Harper Hall (which, to the surprise of her teachers, she seemed capable of actually grasping); thorough instruction in etiquette and social graces; and, of course, the expectation that she, as the Holder's eldest daughter, would be married off to the highest bidder.
Still burned from the scorn heaped upon his scheming sister, and unwilling to repeat his father's mistakes, Vassem may have been too demanding in his expectations for Inviere's courtiers. Those suitors still willing to associate with the spurned Mistys were rebuffed as inferior, and at 24, Inviere was well on her way to spinsterhood when a fortuitous match was finally made with the heir to Balen.
Long story short, Inviere was two weeks shy of being hitched when her fling with one of Lord Tillek's relatives was discovered; it would have been a less egregious offense had her aunt Ysave not been so recently embroiled in the dispute over Tillek's Holdership. With the battle lines thus drawn, Inviere was expelled from Misty and packed off north on the next supply caravan.
Knowing the Weyr's involvement in the mess over Tillek's Holdership, and counting on the axiom "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" to hold up under scrutiny, Inviere left the train at High Reaches Weyr with Big Plans for a swift revenge. She assumed that the young, mercurial Weyrleaders could be manipulated into securing her comfort and some semblance of prestige. Instead, she left Tiriana's weyr with her tail between her legs and an assignment in the stables, not to mention a stipend and a clothes allotment equal to that of any common resident.
This did not make her happy.
Without any other options, she bitched her way through a few months of scrubbing, shoveling, and grooming. The Weyrfolk were no help - when they weren't unsympathetic to Inviere's issues, they were downright enthusiastic about their ridiculous little utopia. Almost universally friendless, it was hard to know whether she preferred it that way. Even after securing a somewhat improved position in the Weyr's stores, she'd had about enough of being stymied, mocked, and ordered around by people she resented. She was near the end of her rope when Leova's Vrianth, no doubt suffering from some terminal illness of the brain, Searched her for Iovniath and Cadejoth's latest clutch.
Hell, it was better than being out on her ass again. And if she could manage to entice one of the little darlings, maybe she could make this whole dragonriding thing work for her...
Relationships
- Like most people, Inviere can't friggin' stand Tiriana. She particularly hates her because she considers herself the Weyrwoman's equal -- if not her better -- in looks, breeding, and intelligence, but she can never seem to get the upper hand. Tiriana may be the one woman bitchier than Inviere.
- Saliqa kind of gets her, except where Saliqa is magnanimous, sedulous, and refined, Inviere was raised around sailors. So that's... pretty much the difference.
- Rorkes has not been terrible to Inviere; in fact, he helped her stagger to her cot after a night of emotional drinking. She also has a kind of uneasy truce happening with K'del, with whom she can bond over Tiriana's flagrant Crazy.
- Not long after showing up at High Reaches, she thought maybe she might get to use W'chek to sleep her way to the top. Turns out, she's not really his type. She likes that he gets the Holdbred thing, but she's about as big a fan of his homosexuality as he is. They... aren't really pals.
- Gabrion and Silarra are stupid and suck.
- Inviere, in general, is not a big fan of wide-eyed idealism or fanatic supporters of life at the Weyr. Although less openly hostile than when she first arrived, she generally avoids the other candidates and Weyr residents, which is probably better for everyone. She can make nice in a pinch, but hanging around all these excitable teenagers kind of makes her die inside.
