| He could've had her, if he wanted. It wasn't the first time Leiventh had caught Zaisavyth, and Mirinda's gold was prone to fondness for past suitors. R'hin enjoyed, he admitted, the notoriety and the ability to influence the young minds of potential riders, to pick through the offerings and find the diamonds in the rough, to form and guide them. This time, however, there was far more at stake. He had waited long enough. It'd been just shy of two Turns since I'kris and Svissath went between. Time enough for complacency to set in. The signs were obvious to everyone: Mirinda's bubbly persona taking on a more prickly cast; Zaisavyth's snippishness, and finally Oriane and Evielth's departure early in the day. R'hin kept tabs, and had others keep tabs on Mirinda and M'kris' whereabouts both. Bristia helped him; having worked with him long enough not to ask why, even if her knowing gaze suggested she was well aware of the reason for his interest. Riahla did, too: he suspected his daughter found amusement in her socially awkward blue bothering M'kris' Feyzeth. It was Bristia's Saindyth who informed Leiventh that M'kris had found a room for himself, far away from where the other riders gathered at Mirinda's weyr. It wasn't the first time M'kris' bronze had chased Mirinda's queen while making sure he was well out of the way in case he did win, and while he told others he felt it was Feyzeth's duty to participate in his Weyr's junior flight, R'hin often wondered if M'kris didn't do it for much the same reason he himself did. The location was remote; well on the other side of the Weyr in one of the airy, open huts. If either won, there was no chance they'd reach Mirinda's side in time if either won. "M'kris." He could feel the blood pounding through his head; feel the tearing of flesh and that slick, metallic taste as it ran down Leiventh throat. He fought the urge to get sucked in, the urge to seek out Zaisavyth's rider. M'kris was sprawled out on the small cot, and as R'hin appeared, he sat up abruptly, eyes narrowed in surprised suspicion. "R'hin. Why aren't you with the others?" "Because... you're here." They stared at each other. Distantly, the sound of Zaisavyth's delighted scream as the queen launched into the air could be heard, the bronzes and browns of the Weyr surging up after her. Blood pounded in his head, and R'hin fought to stay in the moment. His fist clenched, and he said a name. M'kris stared at him for a moment, then laughed. "All this, for that idiot son of mine?" He'd meant to be smart about this, but blood and fury roared in his head, even as Leiventh did. The first punch was his, and the second, before M'kris recovered from the surprise and gave as good as he got. Had he been in control enough, maybe he would've been able to sense his fury at M'kris bleeding through to Leiventh. Maybe he would've stopped Leiventh going for Feyzeth with teeth and claws. Maybe he would've been able to minimize the damage Leiventh's wicked talons did to Feyzeth's mainsails, or twist out of the grip of the other bronze as the two of them sunk like stones towards the ground. Maybe. Then again, maybe not. "Your own FUCKING son." He remembered screaming that, later on. Remembered the thudding of his fist into flesh. Remembered the pain that lanced through him as two of his ribs cracked when M'kris threw him into the edge of the cot. And he remembered, too, M'kris' agonized cry, and his own, as their dragons hit the ground, hard. --- Oriane was there, when he woke. Not to comfort, of course, but to chastize: "Was this about I'kris? That boy made his own bed, no matter how much of an asshole his father is. That father has sway, and he's got it in for you now. I can only protect you so much; his family is well connected." "I know." It was worth it. --- "That was dumb." Bristia could always be relied on to point out his failings, as she sat cross-legged on his bed, drinking his good stash of liqueur. R'hin grunted as he shifted in the bed, trying to get a more comfortable position. "But satisfying." "Satisfying and dumb. I'm sure Leiventh agrees with me; he always was the more intelligent of the pair of you." Leiventh. R'hin stretched out, finding the bronze waking to even his light touch, breath sucking in as agony not-his-own rolled over him, making him groan aloud and double over -- which hurt worse, with his broken ribs. He lay there panting, after. "Dumb." Bristia said, sounding far too self-satisfied. And still drinking his gold-damned liqueur. « Dumb, » Leiventh agreed in his head, the muted pain of his dragon's injuries threaded through with acceptance of his rider's proclivities. Even the dumb ones. |

On the one hand... dumb. Dumb dumb dumb dumb.
On the other? Yes. Oh so satisfying. STUPID M'KRIS. RAWR RAWR RAWR RAWR!
I love how long R'hin waited to pounce. And while I feel bad for Leiventh... just think of all of the sympathy-attention he's gonna get! So much love~

< I wish I had something to say that wasn't said. I'm just glad I got to see this before I left for a few days.
And I do love vengeance.
