| It was late in the evening, and though Madilla was not officially 'on duty' in the Infirmary, she was nonetheless still in her office, still at work, still focusing hard upon the matters at hand. It had been the better part of a turn, now, since she'd taken on this role, and though she was certainly becoming more accustomed to it, it nonetheless continued to weigh heavily upon her shoulders. One of her Journeyman had been caught engaging in a relationship with one of the posted Apprentices; left to deal with the mess, she hardly knew what to think. Dyrna was a talented healer, and would likely walk the tables in another turn or so... but she had been warned more than once that failure to follow Apprentice rules would prevent her progression. Elghan cared about the girl, that much was certain, but he was her superior: it was inappropriate, even if it hadn't been against the rules. Madilla hated dealing with matters like this. She hated having to call people up on their behaviour, and hated having to lay down the law. Dyrna would need to go back to the Hall, she supposed, where she would be under more supervision; this posting had been an excellent opportunity for her, but this couldn't go unchallenged. Unfortunately, that meant telling the Hall what had happened... and that, Madilla anticipated, would be less than ideal for both parties. She felt guilty, too. How had she failed to see? The whole affair had been going on for months, it seemed, and she'd not caught a whiff of it until-- until now. It reflected badly on her, too: she was responsible for the Apprentices. She was responsible for all of them. Not for the first time, she reflected that she was glad to have only a small staff to be responsible for. How did anyone manage to look out for a much larger group? The thought sent her thoughts towards the Weyr in which she lived, a direction not unusual these days. As she dealt with her own, smaller concerns, she could never help but wonder at what it must be like to care for an entire Weyr. True, it was different, and yet... She liked and respected both Weyrwomen. She liked both brownriders, too, though she knew Taikrin only in passing, and H'kon... she felt for H'kon, more than anything. She wished she could comfort him, somehow; she wished she could ease those wrinkles in his brow. She wished she could ease all of their burdens. Politics were not her area of expertise. How this matter should play out was not something she was sure of; Weyr business was Weyr business, not craft. She lived here, and of course she'd had opinions on Iolene, but... And yet, as she reminded herself, when Iolene had been in power, she had been just another Healer, her concerns focused on her patients and on her family, nothing more. Now, she was responsible for far more than that: for the facilities, for her staff, for the overall health of the Weyr, for supplies, for-- so much more. Could she really afford not to pay heed to the greater Weyr? But that doesn't mean I need to pick a horse, she told herself, firmly. It doesn't mean I need to decide between them, or campaign. No, it didn't mean that. But as she worried at the skin of her lip with her front teeth, she knew that the time for distancing herself was probably gone. She didn't need to pick a Weyrwoman, but she did need to pay attention. Because whatever happened, it was likely to have an impact on her, as surely as a stone dropped in a pond sends ripples towards the shore. Brieli? Azaylia? H'kon? Taikrin? K'del? It didn't matter yet... but if it did, she would need to show action. For her staff, and for her family, and for the good of the Weyr. |
