Squishy Puffed Sweets Egg
Large, lumpen, and vaguely menacing, this white ovoid's apex and base are difficult to tell apart. From a distance, the egg appears almost sticky, almost squishy, like it would have a spongy sort of give, and yet cling to one's fingers if one dared to caress the shell. Up close, it's clear that it's just an egg, though those two odd dots of bluish-black along one side seem to be watching, following, and waiting for an opportune moment to unleash the beast within.
The Squishy Puffed sweets egg seems to expand again, fissures down its sides gleaming wet and gooey. The creature within gives a visible twist, streaks of darkness showing through the pale egg-slime. It is difficult to tell which part of the dragon emerges first - was it a wing? A snout? The dark brown hatchling seems to burst forth all at once, left standing in a pile of shards as he snorts in vicious triumph over his former confines.
Disreputable Debonair Brown
Polished and lacquered to a lustrous shine, deep walnut brown has been carved to the shape of a dragon so sleek and sharp that he seems almost stylized. He is pointed in visage with a narrow snout and slim, erect headknobs that lend him an alert and mischievous air. A razor-line of serrated neckridges, age-blackened at their bases, spikes down his back and, paired with ebony claws and a long, animated tail, adds a rakish flair to his rangy form. The tight grains of dark, ruddy wood run across his chest and flanks, lines that accentuate his youthful muscle. But here, over well-formed shoulders and haunches, his polish shows careless wear and dull blotches, as if his lacquer is ready to peel away. His wings, when spread, reveal elongated tips like wicked spines and sails adorned with a hint of angular scrolling, as though decoration has been burned into their delicate membranes. He moves with unthinking ease, the grace of a creature comfortable and confident in himself.
Temperament
Here is a dragon with a flamboyant nature to match your own. Kajrath's arrogance infiltrates every facet of his behavior. He loves to show off - and why shouldn't he? He knows his talents - easy grace and quick intelligence - and relies heavily on them, not to mention a little luck. Throughout weyrlinghood, he'll be a terrible influence when it comes to breaking the rules - « Rules are for those who don't have our good looks » - for his humor is wry and ready and certainly part of his allure. They may say you aren't ready to fly or to ride, but he'll be eager to persuade you otherwise. It may take all your sweet-talking to convince him that there's folly in such actions when his thinking isn't right in line with your own.
This attitude of self-confidence extends to his work ethic, as well. « Why should we go to that drill? You know I'm the best one out there. I don't need practice. » And he may well be the best, or could be if he'd just show up and work a little harder. He doesn't even seem to mind getting into trouble if you're caught. Let that weyrlingmaster berate the pair of you - he's the sort to turn to your nearest classmate and wink. It's all just more attention and he does love attention.
And that sense of humor may be dark at times. He's not beyond jealousy or ridicule and his wry turn of phrase has a tendency to bite and injure others, possibly extending to you when he's irate or sullen. He may even purposefully encourage others to dangerous behavior to suit his fancy. He knows some remorse when his words cut deep or some unwitting accomplice ends up in hot water, but his arrogance may lead him to push such feelings aside, at least until he grows up a little and learns some restraint.
As he matures, he'll develop a sense of responsibility. His recklessness may not wane, nor his rash enthusiasm, but he's a bit more likely to hesitate when others' well being is at stake. You, surely, are precious to him - where once he might have encouraged misbehavior or danger, he's now more cautious. This may also begin to apply to those he sees as weaker than himself. He's protective, even if his careless nature makes him ill-suited for it.
He adores attention and loves you for your ability to garner it. You're an endless source of pride to him. His need for attention, however, should not be confused with a need to be liked - he has no qualms about going his own way and doesn't expect you to conform for the sake of conformity either. He embraces your exotic background, penchant for adventure and need to get away from weyr life's constraints. He likes nothing better than to exaggerate just how different the two of you are from many others at the Weyr.
He's intelligent and though his first impulse may be one of brash impudence and flair, he's surely capable of seeing the logic in a sensible argument. He does try to do the right thing - he knows what that is - and in the conflict between sense and passion lies his deeper self, the one that only you know. He remembers the vague sensations of his well-compartmentalized regret and guilt from times when he's wounded others. In these introspective moments, the source of his frustration is his sinking feeling of doubt and inadequacy, the realization that he is indeed a reckless, irresponsible creature. Hopefully you will be ready to remind him of the satisfaction he gets from being the charismatic instigator that he is, of the excitement of narrow escapes, and of the courage with which he approaches life.
His rakish manners and handsomely youthful build may make Kajrath popular with females and he returns their attention by giving them a taste of his charm. But they are all just females, lumped into a single entity and it's rare that one should stand out to him; he has the prerogative to be choosey. A rising green may lure him more as a chance to show off than for warmer feeling toward her specifically. He generally expects to win and if nothing else, he's going to go down in a blaze of glory, showing off all his talents. Of course, the time may come when his feelings, or perhaps yours, draw him to a deeper connection with a certain female, be it loyal friendship or something more intimate in nature.
Should he ever win a gold flight, he will make an enormously proud parent, eager for the world to see the lovely clutch he has created and particularly eager to have candidates on the sands - though watch out should some accidental danger come to his eggs, then his proud display may vanish in a frenzy of parental concern. His attachment to such a gold is likely to remain steadfast even after his careless nature has allowed him to forget the offspring of which he was once so boastful.
When he first rises to meet it, the threat of Thread, so real, will sink in - a true threat, unlike the prospect of extra chores or drills - and he'll rally against this danger with more than just determination but a deep-seated hatred. His apparent laziness will all but vanish as he discovers what it is that he is truly meant to do. Threadfall will pose to him the challenge that so many other tasks have lacked. And now you may start to wonder if his recklessness isn't more akin to bravery than it once seemed. There is little he won't do to fight the ancient menace or to protect his wingmates and the world from its deadly clutches.
That said, this might be the time, if never before, that you must try to exert some restraint for him. He'll be sorely tempted to disregard authority and do what he thinks is best. He is glorious addition to any wing and a loyal friend, but never moreso than when you remind him that caution and restraint have their place, even in Threadfall.
Should the pair of you be in a position to lead others, it will well suit his natural charisma, but you may also find that his is more protective tendencies may submit to his impulses. It will be up to you to help him find the balance.
Mindvoice
Like a canine rushing headlong through midnight's underbrush, your Kajrath's mental imagery may often come in the hues of shadows. His enthusiasm manifests in a stream of dark leafy greens, the gray-browns of twigs and a blackness to which he pays no heed. With his joy come glimpses of stars and the full moon above, his wonder the gray-green of open fields and his fury banishes all color for the darkness of pitch. His voice itself is expressive and warm, imbibed with confidence and the sense of safety that comes with it.
Internal Impression Message
The cheers of the crowd grow louder, deeper, deafeningly transforming to an odd roar, the low, rattling growl of a strange mechanical thunder. Colors fade, the brilliant hues of festive clothing and newly hatched dragonets meld into shades of shadowy woodland greens, grays and brown. The black sands at your feet seem to sparkle like a starlit night, as does the high cavern above. Which way is up? The otherworldly thunder grows louder, shaking in your chest until it seems certain that your own heart has fallen into rhythm with it. Should you be scared? Perhaps. But with the steaming, faded colors that rush around you and the deep, reverberating sound comes a sense of excitement, a headlong careless confidence that is certain everything will turn out brilliantly. « Izarit. » It's a rich, expressive voice, one you're sure you've heard before. « We will be glorious together. I am Kajrath. »
External Impression Message
Tall, red hair, freckles: she is the one - and now Disreputable Debonair Brown stops completely before her, with only the sudden intensity of his stare and light swish of his tail against the sand to show his claim. His eyes, simply the red of hunger a moment ago, spark with a love's sudden radiance of violet.
Inspiration
Kajrath was inspired by Sirius Black of Harry Potter fame. Born to the pureblood Black family, Sirius was the only one to be sorted into Gryffindor, the house of bravery, and your dragon has a good deal of this courage in him. But Sirius Black was a bit of a bad boy at Hogwarts; described as talented, intelligent, arrogant and carelessly handsome, he was a troublemaker, along with his best friend James Potter, but nevertheless popular among students and faculty. He grew up to be a member of the Order of the Phoenix, to boldly fight the good fight against the forces of Lord Voldemort. For Kajrath, Thread is such an enemy. As Harry Potter's godfather and guardian, he is proud and protective, though finds some difficulty striking a balance between that protective urge and his own reckless nature. He has a somewhat dark sense of humor, as evident by his teasing and ridicule of Severus Snape and through a combination of this humor and his unflagging arrogance, Sirius meets his downfall and thus we have attempted to incorporate these failings into Kajrath for the opportunities of depth and conflict.
Kajrath's description was inspired by a wand, sleek, pointed and well used. Though the wood of Sirius Black's wand has not been specified, walnut suited your preference for a dark color and is associated with noble, spontaneous, egotistical and passionate qualities. His movement is based on his animagus form of a dog.
Name: Kajrath - Kajrath's name comes from the initial introduction of Sirius Black as the infamous Prisoner of Azkaban, having similar rhythm and ring to it, and was also chosen for having a slightly arabic sound as requested. ;)
Egg Inspiration: The Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man from _Ghostbusters_. So delicious, yet so deceptively evil in so many ways.
