R'uen knew, of course. He knew how this was going to go from the start; he'd tried to tell her. Iovniath, too, better than anyone: but there was nothing to stop Tiriana, if there ever had been.

And after a certain point all you could do was push her along, and make sure no one would forget them.

Half the weyr was packed by the time Tiriana returned from the meeting. R'uen and Zaiventh just looked at them, impassively sad now, as they prepared another load to move. The kids were already gone; they'd been gone for days, since Tiriana's grandmother had shown up to take them on to Ierne. Nobody was really surprised, after all. Ria was of a mind to break K'del's other arm for him, but with three boys under five to handle, she couldn't quite manage it before returning with them to Ierne

Left alone when R'uen and Zaiventh vanished again into between with the last of everything, Tiriana couldn't even manage more tears. Lesson learned too late; always so useless when crying. She felt like all the tears were gone anyway, dried up somewhere between the meeting and the Weyr that had once seemed like coming home, now like another planet entirely. It'd been, what? Better than ten turns since the last time she was run out of a home. And ten turns before that, it'd been leaving Ierne. She wondered for the first time where she would be in another ten turns.

We did fuck it up, in the end. She should have known.

Iovniath's mind remained an oppressive, frigid presence over her Weyr, humans and dragons alike. She blamed them, every one of them; she wanted them to know it and feel it in every traitorous, ingrate bone. Winter was here; winter would remember.

« Even she could not accout for the betrayals we have endured, » Iovniath answered, her voice ice-bladed. « They think us too weak and lost to repay them in kind, but they will learn in time. We will hang them all, as we have before. » The faces flickered along the frost-coated walls of her mind: Rajiv-K'del-Iolene-Lujayn-all the Weyrleaders of Pern. « Our children will laugh when we have our revenge. Let us go. »

"Wait," Tiriana said aloud, her first words since the conclave. "Wait."

She disappeared down the corridors already something foreign, her expression defiant and haughty; no one dared meet her eyes. Soon she returned to Iovniath's side, and together they walked to K'del's empty weyr. Cadejoth was nowhere to be seen, probably too scared to show his face around his betrayed queen; K'del probably had his dick in something else to celebrate already.

So Tiriana torched the whole thing.

The bed, the wardrobe, the desk and couches--the flamethrower gushed fire throughout the weyr as she worked back toward the door, covering her face with one sleeve. Smoke was billowing in short order, and Tiriana coughed against it before she dumped the flamethrower at the door and met Iovniath.

The frost-pale gold's faceted eyes reflected the firelight, and when Tiriana mounted, clearly her eyes against the smoke, she could already see people running for the weyr as smoke flooded out its mouth. She thought she could make out K'del at the front of them, and she smirked, flipped him off, and nudged Iovniath aloft. Together, they blinked between from the Reaches.

Somewhere, far in the south, Summer was waiting for them.

Black.

Blacker.

Blackest.
