| Though weyrlings tended to be 'protected goods,' there was a huge Weyr with many dragons and many people all about them. Gossip and honest news of the outside world could not be supressed for long. The enormity of it truly only hit Ellerey after she'd eaten lunch, then settled down on her cot for a quick nap between bouts of filling Virisceth's stomach, settling the green down for her own post-eating nap, and oiling her dark hide. They could all be DEAD. But they WEREN'T. Word of the deaths of Southern Boll's Lady and Lord - of Lady Edeline's closure of Tillek to all outsiders - brought to painfully-intense focus just how lucky her Trading family had been to never be able to make it to their usual wintering grounds in Boll. Their lateness in getting started the previous Turn, the sudden advent of Winter...even the extra day Elle's gram had convinced their leaders to take to help Ellerey settle into the Weyr a bit better before the Traders' departure... all of it was a massive blessing in disguise. Her mother, father, brother, sister, grandmother and grandfather...her friends and 'extended' family. They were hopefully going to be SAFE from the plague at Tillek. Her own life didn't matter as much, compared to those others. Not even Virisceth mattered as much as the safety of those she loved and helped to protect. Relief poured through her body and mind, and - in their wake - many other emotions she'd been avoiding giving in to since Virisceth chose her surfaced, overwhelmed her. Long, dark eyelashes fluttered, and - for the first time since she'd been here - Ellerey allowed herself the grace to cry in near-silence, her gasps uttered into her pillow. It was a cleansing, and it would not be further denied. Deeply asleep in her couch, Virisceth shuddered once, bared her teeth, twitched...and awoke with yellow eyes spinning. All the primal young green did was to near-silently gain her feet, then shift her body to finally sit upon haunches at Elle's side. And watch...and guard her rider in this vulnerable moment. It was only after the weyrling's tears finally ebbed that Virisceth carefully lowered her head upon her chosen's belly, and offered a soft, metallic-sounding croon to her. For the first time in their 'relationship,' Ellerey reached out to curl her hands about Viri's neck and jaw, and hug them to her. |
