%tSand whips across the hide of this sepia-toned dragon, settling heavily over the clean cut muscles of his long solid figure. He's substantial without being cumbersome; he moves with an unusual amount of deliberate purpose. While his color might be considered bland, it is when the light hits the etchings of his sturdy build that its true brilliance shines. Glints of illumination reflect back like granules speckling his otherwise even hide. Polished limestone lays contrast to the heavy deposits of grit that have collected on the sweeping expanse of his wide wings and the breadth of shoulders and haunches. Bright sunrise glares from his neckridges, precisely placed in a series of sharp crests that stamp their mark along his neck until his head is reached. Bands of dark brown over his eyeridges create the illusion of true brows, balancing the angles of his square jaw, and his slanted eyes are rimmed with near-black to lend an exotic air to his determined gaze.

Sunstruck Waves Egg
Shadows and highlights play across an egg of aquamarine, like perky little whitecaps whisked across the surface of a sunstruck lake. When both egg and viewer are still, the pale parts seem like raised bumps that one could feel by hand-- but changing perspective reveals that the varied hues of blue and green have a faint iridescence, and as they shimmer the 'waves' cascade into motion across the shell.
Sunstruck Waves Egg rocks back and forth in its sandy depression. Rock, rock, split. A crack appears straight down the middle, through whitecaps and the lake itself. With another jerk the hatchling inside shatters the shell the rest of the way. Blue tone pieces go flying and left there in the middle of it all is a sandy brown dragon. He shakes his head to try and whip off any goop that might remain.

Temperament
Aruseth really likes you, Eirlys. That much is clear from the very beginning. Unfortunately any outright expression of that is going to take a backseat during weyrlinghood. He'll choose instead to be something of a pain in the ass. He questions authority, he questions the older dragons and he questions you. « But why? Why this way? Why not this way? » He's going to push a lot to find out just what makes you and everyone else tick. But it's not contentious; a lot of the time it's in good humor that he pokes and prods. « Aw, c'mon, Lys. » He'll feel bad when he pushes too hard and will fall all over himself to apologize. And honestly, it's simply a phase that he's going to go through.
After those first few months out of the shell, Aruseth will settle down a bit. He'll need help from you to become more grounded, but over time he'll come to appreciate the structure of the weyr and the way rank works. It all starts to make sense to him. As time progresses it's likely that he'll turn from student to teacher and be pushing you to accept these things as well. « Eirlys, you really shouldn't roll your eyes at the weyrlingmaster like that. You'll get us in trouble. » With this new-found respect for his instructors, Aruseth will delve into his lessons. He's particularly fascinated by the mechanics of flight and he'll want to learn all about them and for you to do so as well. When you finally take to the skies, he'll be quite talented despite his size. He'll likely partake in no small amount of boasting; he's going to want to let everyone know how great he is at this. And you're not too bad yourself. There's a duality however: while he's promoting himself, and you, there'll be no hesitation in helping others. He's there for them, willing to give pointers and offering to lend a hand. He'll develop strong bonds with his clutchmates, ones that will likely last the rest of your lives together.
Once Aruseth reaches adulthood, you'll find that he's mellowed out considerably from his more youthful and challenging days. He's a duty bound dragon through and through; he's not going to want to shirk sweeps or drills and he'll want you to take these things just as seriously. It all comes from the strong sense of pride and love that he has for Ista, something he has in common with Laonyth and his dam, Safriath. While he's not one to lay around in the sun basking during his free time, he enjoys being near the ocean and can appreciate the rays while he's there. In addition, he has a fascination with the fishing vessels that dot the waters around the island and will occasionally feel inclined to float towards some of the sloops and investigate what they're up to.
And remember that understated adoration he had in the beginning? Well, it's still there. It comes out more clearly in little slips or will seep through the cracks of his sardonic humor. He's not the type to have his proverbial feathers ruffled by much of anything and he'll encourage a similar attitude in you. He won't want you to become so riled by simple things and will often try to soothe you with a joke or some other flash of comedy. « Let it roll off you, Lys. We already know that you're right. » He'll have thoughts about your personal life too and while Aruseth won't expect you to change your behavior, there will be a push to change the reasons behind what you're doing. He has a deep understanding of you and will look to ease your pain, buoy you up and encourage a greater sense of worth than you might be used to. This doesn't just extend to you personally but also to your interactions with others, he wants you to recognize your fellows as something valuable. People shouldn't just be regarded as disposable. You included.
Aruseth is kind of cute here. While normally he's a rather relaxed type of guy, the opposite sex just doesn't seem to be something that he gets and he's likely to fumble and bumble with the formal introductions. Unless he's had a series of lengthy encounters with the female about to rise, in which case his propensity for banter will be a little less daft and more natural, he's not going to be very suave when it comes to talking to them. In fact, he might be more on the avoidant side. He'll be looking to you, Eirlys, to give him the necessary information on the female mind and help him get by. Though maybe it's just best if he didn't talk at all during the encounter.
Thankfully, what he lacks for in smooth conversation he can make up for in the skies. He'll take off like a rocket after his current desire and all that practice flying in his free time is really going to pay off. He's got stamina and better than average speed for a brown. So he's not an acrobat in the skies, but he's got the potential to outpace the competition. Afterwards, if he won? He'll smugly let the losers know he did. « Suckers. » And ultimately, he's the romantic sort so he'll stay around until the green or gold kicks him to the curb in the morning. In the event that he doesn't catch his intended prize, he will grumble, complain and on occasion lower himself to making some disparaging (if harmless) comments about the dragon that did.
Aruseth's wing is one of the cornerstones of his life. He's interested in his wingmates and what they're doing. He'll prefer to spend time bonding with them over interaction with dragons outside of this particular group. In many ways he's likely to become the heart of whatever wing you find yourselves in. As in weyrlinghood, he'll become deeply bonded to his compatriots. When one falls, he'll encourage them to stand again, get a grip and do better next time around. He doesn't necessarily do it in the most diplomatic fashion, choosing most of the time to take the more direct approach. There's no point in sugar coating it, right?
It's his selfless attitude when it comes to those close to him that make Aruseth a likeable dragon and one with leadership potential. He has the ability to make split second decisions and take decisive actions regarding them. He's not one to waffle when there's something urgent going on. Over time, it's possible his outlook will push you in the direction of leadership, if the position seems desirable to him and beneficial to you. But ultimately, while he's tightly wrapped up in his duties and wingly interactions, he's unlikely to do more than begrudgingly complain (now and again) if you decide to turn down one of his ideas.
Public Impression Message
Satirical Sandstone Brown wanders past a group of boys, turning his head to look them over curiously. He gives a huff suddenly, not deeming any of them the appropriate one. He continues on his hunt, finally stopping before a young woman with straw colored hair. There, he has found the one and approaches her, his great brown head lowering as he presses his damp hide against her.
Private Impression Message
The sands is a distracting array of noises--eggs are bursting open and candidates are making nervous sounds as the hatchlings are wandering along making their choices. It doesn't come suddenly, but gradually. A slow build up that begins with whistling sand through the air, just a little distracting, and ends with howling winds that whip around you, engulfing you in their blinding array of particles. Much more distracting, more attention grabbing. When he finally touches you for the first time, all of that will suddenly stop. The calm has come and you two are the center of the storm, « Aruseth. Pleased to meet you, Eirlys. Can we get the hellos over with? I'm starving; I could use some red meat. » His cool-as-rock tone is at odds with that otherwise rough texture to his mind, but neither completely hide the relief he feels in having found you at last.
Mindvoice
Aruseth is ever-present in your mind. He's like shifting sand in your thoughts, filling up all the little crevices and empty spaces with tiny little granules. When he speaks its often a low, drawling tone like grating gravel as he allows his thoughts to manifest. There's often an ironic twist to the way he phrases things, a touch of dry humor to nearly every statement. When he's annoyed or angry about something the sandstorm of his mind whips into a full assault, blinding his adversary with his razor wit and ego stomping one-liners.
Inspiration
With our inspiration for this clutch being movie franchises, Aruseth draws his personality largely from Colonel Jack O'Neill from the Stargate series. While his description and mindvoice draws elements of Abydos from the original movie, he's much more themed towards the Jack of SG-1 as you requested, with the attempt to bring in a more relaxed and humorous vibe than the Colonel from the first movie. His description was inspired by the pyramids of Egypt and Aruseth's name, after much deliberation, comes from a combination of Abydos (the city), Tau'ri (the people) and Ra (the god) and hopes to evoke the overall feeling of ancient egypt.
Egg inspiration: Special lights with rotating gobos can create a believable 'water' image, turning a stage into the surface of a wind-tickled lake. These days, digital projectors often create the same effect.
