Mottled Obsidian Egg
Lhiannonth settles some distance away from the eggs to rest, tail curling and uncurling restlessly. She's some moments there before rising to a crouch, and she doesn't even move closer to the rest of the clutch before depositing a black egg.
Against the golden yellows of the sands, this egg stands out in stark, bleak contrast. Opaque, the black surface draws attention, the curve of its shell guiding eyes along the surface and down to the black fingers that seem to stretch out towards the hot sands. Although initially the egg seems entirely black, a closer inspection will reveal little white lines, like veins, that run across the entire surface, creating a mottled, rippling look of obsidian. The egg is set somewhat apart from the others within the clutch, as if a deliberately wide berth has been given.
Mottled Obsidian Egg continues to shudder with increasing intensity, cracks widening to show flashes of the dark hide of the dragonet within. A last, forceful rock sends it toppling over, black shell crumbling to reveal a triumphant looking bronze.
Tarnished Temperamental Bronze
Burnished veining spreads across tarnished wingsails, turning them lighter and brighter than the weathered bronzen hide stretching across the rest of this hatchling's solid frame. Well muscled, but without the added bulk which would make him truly muscle bound, he retains much of the maneuverability that escapes many dragons of his size. Even in the midst of hatchling awkwardness, he moves with the fluid power and predatory grace of a developing hunter's stalk. An overabundance of confidence manifested in the edgy quality he possesses whether still, or moving with the explosive energy that matches his apparent temper. His chiseled features give him a strong face that is none the less expressive, perhaps helped by the indented places along his muzzle, eye ridges and head knobs that are more polished in hue, adding a certain depth to his image. A mantle of darkness spreads from streaks of mahogany, reaching down from the neck ridges that line the upper curve of his neck to stain his shoulders, with a dorsal strip darkening also the length of his spine to the restless tip of his whip thin tail. Close inspection showing scattered glints of brightness across the remainder of his irrevocably muddied hide.
Temperament
From the moment he cracks shell Jaireth will be a remarkably self-focused dragon. Particularly as a weyrling, Jaireth won't hesitate to manipulate others for his own enjoyment, or his own benefit. It will be your job, B'yan, to keep him from tricking Okenith into eating the wrong kind of firestone, or convincing Raneth to share the larger portion of the fish P'mar just caught for him. Jaireth won't be above practical jokes either, though they'll often be aimed to embarrass, such as trying to convince one of his clutchmates that class is, in fact, meeting at a later time than it actually is. Weyrlinghood is always a time for learning duty and responsibility, but this will be doubly so for you, as you will have to struggle with Jaireth's fondness for mischief-making and occasional surliness. Admittedly, said surliness generally only crops up when he doesn't get his way, and it is a trait that will temper as he ages, though he'll never lose the conviction that you and he together could do a better job than your Wingleader, or even the Weyrleader. He will, however, remain committed to his duties, perhaps sometimes surprising even you in his decisions to do as he's told. And he'll take well to the physical aspects of Weyrlinghood: the exercises, flying practice - he'll work hard to build up his strength and skills, and then maintain them, and he'll encourage you to do the same, urging you to do extra laps around the bowl even when your other classmates have all gone to rest or eat dinner. He'll be less enthusiastic about the more academic aspects of training, and pay little to no attention when you have to memorize wing formations, or learn about dragonhealing.
Another thing you will have to remain vigilant for is Jaireth's tendency to try and aggravate other dragons. And while he may eventually, as he ages, learn that there is a time and place for jokes and tricks, he'll never hesitate to throw out a snide or brash comment. In particular, he may tend to target those he perceives to be too clean-cut, or stuck-up, but more or less anyone is a fair target when it comes down to it.
When it comes to females and mating flights, Jaireth's a fan. More often than not he'll express a preference for green, preferring the fun without the fuss and bother of a clutch. He'll be one to chase often, as well, not often preferring one dragon over another, except for the few days after a catch: before the memory fades, he will treat his latest catch well, keeping an eye out for her and spending a little extra time with her tucked under his wing in the bowl. If he *does* happen to catch a gold, he will warm to the idea of offspring, though perhaps slowly. Initially he'll be too full of himself, boasting to you of his prestigious catch, for the full consequences to sink in: once they do, however, he may even come to like the idea of progeny, and he will, of course, treat the Sands-bound gold with consideration and even kindness (for all that he might not admit he's doing so). Once the eggs have hatched, however, he'll tend to forget about those of his line, never one to be particularly paternal.
Though it may not always seem like it, Jaireth is an incredibly loyal dragon. His loyalty to you, of course, will be uppermost: you are his family, his world, and he will never overlook that bond, for all that the two of you may argue and struggle. Any time you need help, he will be right there for you, and will praise and treasure all efforts you make, down to your cooking. His devotion to his clutchmates, wing, and Weyr as a whole may be less apparent: he'll more readily scoff or complain of them, but should anyone or anything challenge them, he'll be at their side in moments. If a larger dragon gives Kaylith a hard time, he will step in to defend her; or if a contest between Reaches and another Weyr is being held he will immediately urge that the two of you should sign up (though if asked, he'll merely say he enjoys the competition). After all, he may give them all a hard time - he may give *you* a hard time - but in the end you're all still his, and he defends his own.
Public Impression Message
Hunger and prolonged search have made Tarnished Temperamental Burnished Bronze irritable. His eyes whirl red and his talons flex in the sand, though they find no purchase there, sinking into the soft grains. He stalks closer to the line of candidates, tail lashing and stirring up grit as he dismisses one after another with little consideration until - there. He stops abruptly and stalks towards a tall, something something, young man, headbutting him forcefully. You. Now.
Private Impression Message
And all of a sudden *he's* there, rushing into your consciousness in a manner not particularly ungentle. You can feel his gnawing hunger and his heated frustration: at it, at the sand, at *you* for being so hard to find. « You. Boy. B'yan. » You can feel his possessive pride in you, that you're now his, and he's yours, just as strong - if not stronger - than the hunger. « C'mon, now, get to it. Let's get out of this stinkhole and find something to eat. And then, then we'll have some fun. »
Mindvoice
Jaireth's mental presence is rough and unfinished, like unpolished, rough-cut wood, or dusty gravel. When he gets worked up, particularly angry, a low, bass thudding backs his words, not entirely unlike heavy boots hitting a floor; when he's excited, or happy, however, his mental touch takes on a lighter feel, like a strong wind, though there's still bits of grit and sand.
Dragon Inspirations
Jaireth is based entirely off of Jayne Cobb of Joss Whedon's TV series Firefly (and Serenity, the subsequent movie). You asked for a brash, mischievous dragon, and so I tried to emphasize those qualities of Jayne's: his irreverent humor and penchant for messing with his crewmates, along with his determination to speak his mind, despite - or even to specially aggravate - his captain.
Egg Inspiration: A shadow ship, from the 1990?s sci-fi TV series, Bablyon 5.
