What is a MUSH?
There are a plethora of other resources out there that could explain in far more detail about what a MUSH is. However here's the short and long of it on NorConMUSH. A MUSH is a place where a group of people get together, create characters within the specified boundaries of Anne McCaffrey's Pern. (He or she can deviate as far from or be as close to who you are as you want.) Using those characters, you can react with others, creating an interactive story that tells of their lives. A lot of people write up detailed (or not so detailed) backgrouns to draw off of, for who are we if not what our past has made us.
In particular, at High Reaches, we're always looking out for new and returning players who want to give MUSHing a go. We welcome any variety of characters from timid and shy to outrageous and everything in between. What you make of your experience lends its own charm to the area and helps us become a thriving area for play.
How to Connect?
A lot of people use telnet, but it's kind of raw and difficult to parse through, especially if there's a lot going on. So getting a MUSH client is recommended. MUSHClient (PC), SimpleMU (PC), Atlantis (Mac), and TinyFugue (Unix) are all fairly popular and relatively easy to set up.
The address to utilize is: ncmush.net port 4210
If you really just want to connect to the game and check it out CLICK HERE and you'll be on using telnet.
I'm Connected! Now What?
So from here, you should see:
Welcome to NorConMUSH! --------------------------- Use create <name> <password> to create a new character. Use connect <name> <password> to connect to your existing character. Use connect guest guest if you'd just like to look around. Use QUIT to logout. Use WHO to find out who is online currently. ---------------------------
Right? If you see that, you're already one step to connecting! Now, type 'connect guest guest' OR, if you're feeling particularly intrepid type 'create <name of your character> <password> '.
For example:
Let's say I want to just create a character, and decide I wanted to name her Canrel.
- create Canrel splat
splat would be my password, and Canrel would be my new character.
From there, a large chunk of text will fly by. Don't worry! If reading is not your thing, maybe MUSHing will not appeal to you since it's all based on writing and reading. But it'll be ok, really. :)
Once the screenfuls have passed, you can start on working on your character. It is HIGHLY advised to connect through one of the previously listed clients before beginning work on a character. And it is highly advised to finish and proof your work in another window (such as Notepad or Word) before cut/pasting it into telnet or your client. This way you'll always have a copy somewhere besides on the game.
How to Setup a Character.
1. DESCRIPTION. You can make this as detailed as you. Some people have two paragraphs, others stick with descriptive but not overly so. To make paragraphs, you use %r (for line breaks) and %t (for tabs). Play around with it and figure things out.
- @desc me=Tall and somewhat stout, Canrel would be what the charitable call big-boned with slight pudge. A pair of hazel eyes are squinty in her long, angular face, a pug nose protruding a little lower than the norm. Wide lips are cracked, but generally seem to be set in that perpetual look of good cheer, where the corners curl up slightly. Her attire is casual, a one-piece work dress with a long tassle rope belt around her waist, where a myriad of little pouches hang from. Shaded a dark grey, the smears from kitchen work aren't visible unless she's standing in the light. While her figure and clothing don't distinguish her much, a fair assessment of her age could be anywhere between twenty and twenty-eight turns.
2. BACKGROUND. Before you head out onto the game you might want to think a few things over of what your character is like. Does he or she have parents? How old is he? Will you be applying for Search? All things to consider. If you want a character who is of Search age, it should be reflected in the desc and most Search applications request some form of in depth background. It's not required, but it's nice to have a reference either in a text file on your computer, or on the game.
- &BG me=Canrel was born in a minor holding near Keroon, where her parents were posted Smiths. etc...
3. NEWS. Please be sure to read through the news. You can access it by typing 'news'.
4. CODE. Ok, so you have to do a few things before leaving the birthplace, because this is a game and it requires a little bit of effort.
| +age/set Y M D | Sets your character's age. |
| @lock me=me | Locks your character. So no one else can pick you up. |
| @lock/use me=me | Uselocks your character. So no one else can use the commands you set on yourself. |
| @set me=enter_ok | Allows people to give you objects. |
| @sex me=<gender> | Sets your gender, for example: @sex me=male or @sex me=female |
| @alias me=<alias> | Sets your alias so that people can use something shorter to page you with. For example: @alias me=Can (for Canrel) |
What Now?
Sheesh, can I play already? Almost there! Now just a few basic commands so you know what's in store for you.
| Command | What does it do? |
|---|---|
| <knot alias> .who/admins | Lists the admins for a particular knot. Valid knot aliases are: FTW or HRW. This will show you who to contact for information regarding an area. |
| new .who | This command will list the people who are currently online on the newbie channel and who might be able to help. |
| =new <chat> | This command will let you chat on the newbie channel! Just type: =new Hi! to say hi to everyone. |
| hrw .who | This command will list the people who are currently online at High Reaches Weyr. |
| p <name>=Hey! | This is how you'd communicate with people out of character. For example, if you'd like to page Bob, you would type: p bob=Hey! -- You can page even more people, for example: p bob cora=Hey! will page Bob and Cora at the same time. |
| l | Short for 'look' this single L will show you the description of the room you are in. |
| l <object> | This command will show you the description of a specific object in the room you are in. |
| l me | This command will show you your own description. |
| WHO | This command will show you a list of all the people who are connected at that time. |
| +where | This command will show you where all those people online are. There are other variations of the command including, +where/pub (which will show you everyone in a public room), and +where/hrw (which will show you where all the people who are knotted at High Reaches are. |
| :waves. | Starting a command with the : will make you pose. So for this example, you would see: Canrel waves. |
| ;’s eyes fly up wide in surprise. | Starting a command with the ; will do a pose but with no space. So for this example, you would see: Canrel's eyes fly up wide in surprise. |
| "Hi! | Starting a command with the " will say something within quotations. So for this example, you would see: Canrel says, "Hi!" |
| \\Moving slowly, Canrel sighs. | Starting a command with \\ will emit a pose. So for this example, you would see: Moving slowly, Canrel sighs. |
| +finger <name> | This gives some pretty handy information on other characters. Remember, this is all out of character information, meaning your character will not know it. This is a distinction that is sometimes difficult for people to make: the difference between what you as a player will know and what your character is capable of knowing. |
Final Remarks
There are some terms that you may come across that might be new or just plain weird.
| IC | In Character |
| OOC | Out of Character |
| RL | Real Life |
| RP | roleplay |
The most important of these is IC and OOC, generally all areas of NorConMUSH is IC, meaning if you are there, you are there as your character and not yourself, and all interactions should be Pern-related. Page and knots are OOC. It'll make more sense once you log in. :)
