| K'del had visited Lujayn often in the past two turns. It had always felt good to be able to bring news, and good, too, to see how happy the goldrider was. When word came that Rielsath was glowing, that the knot had been passed, K'del felt pleased. He would have liked to visit, to congratulate Lujayn, but that was ill advised; he kept his distance, waiting until all the dust had settled. He had Cadejoth keep an ear out-- he wanted to know when the bronzes began keeping an eye on her, when they all began to blood their kills. It happened on day fifteen. Rielsath rose and was chased; she fled, and was pursued. In the end, she was caught by a bronze for the first time in Turns: bronze Kherivoth, rider M'shal. Not someone K'del knew personally, but he was pleased, nonetheless. M'shal's reputation was solid. And Lujayn... Lujayn finally got what she deserved. They waited another two days to visit; waited for the dust to settle. Lujayn seemed pleased - and why shouldn't she be? "It'll be High Reaches next," she supposed, over spiked klah. "Hraedhyth." "You sound certain. Is she--?" "Nearly. Very nearly. If you know what to look for, you can see it." "You'll chase, then." "We'll chase." "And win?" K'del made a face. "Can't say that." "You want to win." "Not even sure if I can say that, either." "What changed?" "Me." "Tell me." K'del told her. Told her about how much he'd enjoyed being Weyrsecond, these recent weeks, but how nice it was to not be the final authority on anything. How he liked his life, how he liked having time for his life. And, "That's probably not the best thing to tell you right now, oh Senior Weyrwoman, but I bet you can imagine it. I'll do it, of course I will. Didn't tell Azaylia I had any doubts; implied I wanted it. I am ready to serve. But--" "But you don't long for it, now." "No. Not anymore." "You could keep him away." "Can't." She accepted that - didn't question it. "Then?" "Then that's all there is. If he wins, I'll do the job, Lu. Do it with everything I've got. And if I don't..." "If you don't?" "Hand in my Weyrsecond's knot, and go back to being a Wingsecond. Enjoy my children, maybe make some more, and let go of the binding ties of leadership." "That relies on it being a Weyrleader you can respect." K'del made a face. "That's the hope. It's about time High Reaches had some good luck." "You don't want to think about the worst case scenario, do you?" "Not much. Rather focus on the good things: on Honshu getting you, on High Reaches getting Azaylia." "Aishani has more backbone." "Azaylia's stronger than she seems." She gave him a long glance. "I believe you." "You'll see." "Would you really be happy as Wingsecond, K'del? For the rest of your days. I remember when you were a candidate, remember. And a weyrling." K'del stared into his glass. "For now." "And later?" "Later comes later. Later's too far away, right now. Right now... I just want to see what happens. Let the dice fall where they may." "May the odds be in your favour, then." "We can only hope."
It had been days, and he was still playing his conversation with Azaylia over in his head. He was glad that they'd cleared the air... but he still wasn't sure that they understood each other completely. Hopefully. Hopefully things were okay. It had burned that she'd so casually doubted his dedication and willingness to serve. It had burned that she'd failed to understand his position. It was true, in a way, that it was better if she wasn't solely focused on him as her eventual Weyrleader... but the fact that she'd expected him to, what, act like a Weyrleader when he wasn't? While she had been busy supporting Taikrin? The double standards had made his head spin. It had hurt. He hoped that the past few months had given her clarity. He hoped she wouldn't be so easily disappointed by human nature, in the future. He hoped she was strong enough-- hoped he'd spoken truth to Lujayn. It wouldn't be long, now. He believed he was ready to let go, if it came to that. Believed he was ready to step up again, too, if it came to that. It was impossible to know for sure now, though. Would he burn for it, if it wasn't his? Would he hate it, if it was? Had this Weyrsecond stint cleared his mind and made it all easier, or had it whet his appetite? Would he be able to let go? Oh shells. « I can catch her, » said Cadejoth, sure. Do I want you to? « That's not the point. » Wasn't it? |
