| The Wingsecond's knot hung from his fingertips, both heavier and lighter than he'd expected it to feel. F'manis had offered it to him this morning after drills, on this first day after his twenty-ninth Turnday. It felt almost appropriate; had things been different, had things not fallen out the way they had, this could so easily have been the first such knot offered his way. He imagined that that other version of himself would have been deeply disappointed to wait this long - more than thirteen turns post Impression! - for a Wingsecond position. And yet... K'del, this K'del, was pleased. He'd not sought out this position, not asked for it or gone out of his way to indicate his interest. He knew, logically, that F'manis was probably making a political statement in making the offer, but-- it was nice to be sought. To be chosen. He'd never really been chosen like that, before. He hadn't even been picked for the silver thread thing, back in weyrlinghood, not at first. That had probably been a test, but that wasn't the point: here he was, a day past twenty-nine, and he was finally being singled out by one person in particular for promotion. Somehow, it mattered more than all of the people who still saw him as 'their' Weyrleader, who still looked to him for guidance. Yes, he'd told F'manis, a man who had never liked him much when he'd first become Weyrleader but who had later grown to respect him: Yes, I will be your Wingsecond. Yes, I still intend to be Weyrleader again, but no, if I am, I won't take your Wing away from you. Wingsecond. How could it be that after all these turns, after all of this, something that simple could feel so satisfying? |
