Description
Of middling height and build, C'sel conveys a sense of calm serenity and reserve in the way that he holds himself. Dark brown hair cut regulation short tends to spike and fade out to a paler hue in the sun, above a face composed of engaging features. Bright blue eyes slant slightly downward at the corners, deep-set under the sparse wings of lightly arched brows. Down-tilted, his nose has a distinct flair through the nostrils, the tip's shape a near match to the definite divide in his upper lip. A full mouth is balanced by a strong jaw, neatly squared with a small cleft in the chin.
Favoring more conservative colors and cuts of clothing, C'sel tends towards the practical in his dress, suiting his choices to the activities and occasions of the day. Always impeccable in appearance, in terms of neatness, his wardrobe can't be called anything other than boring. White linen shirts, neatly tailored, sturdy canvas or wherhide pants and streamlined jackets make up his day-to-day wear.

History
Born and raised in Nabol, Cassel grew up in the shadow of the hold's great orchards, the son of a tree-tender, Hebron and his home-keeping wife, Esella. Hebron had been a Farmcraft apprentice in his youth, but never progressed beyond Senior Apprentice level and returned to his home in Nabol after a two-turn stint at the Farmcrafthall in Nerat to take up tending to the trees as a assistant orchard-keeper. Marrying a local girl was a logical next step and children followed soon thereafter. Cassel is the third of four sons and two daughters and raised to help out with the trees just like his father. The boy however, took a shine to runners at a relatively young age and was always sneaking off to the stables to help muck out stalls, curry down the runners and offering to take the beasts out for exercise as soon as he was tall enough to mount up.
Never a very talkative child, Cassel grew up into a hard-working, dutiful, but somewhat withdrawn teenager. As he got to the age where apprenticeship might be considered, the stablemaster put in a good word with the local runner-breeding Herder journeyman and Cassel started a trial period with the man, learning more of the ins and outs of runner care, anatomy, biology and so on. Two turns later, when he was fifteen, he was finally sponsored to the Hall in Keroon to further his education. Leaving Nabol behind was somewhat difficult for the lad: he'd never been terribly outspoken and making friends in a new place, with a different way of speaking was a challenge. He tended towards abruptness and a certainty and confidence about his own already existing knowledge that also rubbed a lot of his fellow apprentices the wrong way. As a result, he never really integrated all that well at the Hall, though he certainly threw himself wholeheartedly into his studies and eventually earned something like grudging respect from his peers and made a few friends as the outcome of various shared projects over the turns.
Just as Cassel started studying to advance to Journeyman in hopes of obtaining a good posting, dragonriders came on Search from Igen Weyr and picked the apprentice up to Stand. No one could've been more shocked than Cassel himself when the blue nosed at him and the rider made the formal offer. Though his heart was set on that journeyman's knot, Cassel's sense of duty and honor kept him from refusing Search. Again he packed his things and headed off with the riders and one other teen from the Hall to tackle candidacy. The Weyr was a whole new, disorienting experience for the young man and he fell back on restraint and reserve to get him through it, taking things slowly indeed, in spite of more than one flirtatious offer from brazen lower caverns girls and a couple of riders. The attention was flattering, but Cassel didn't understand it, passed it off naively as interest in corrupting the holdbred.
Weeks passed and slowly but surely, the routine of chores, visits to the Sands and getting to know young people from throughout the area and a few from outside of it had just gotten familiar enough when the eggs started rocking. Much to Cassel's surprise, by the end of the Hatching, he was walking away with a rangy, rugged-looking brown who slyly informed him that his name was Corvinth and that they'd be getting through everything together now, thanks very much and could they eat now please?
Corvinth was nothing like what Cassel, now C'sel had expected. He'd not really considered what it really meant to actually Impress and a part of him had assumed he'd be going back to the Hall for that knot he'd been questing after. Instead, he was paired with a crafty, trickster of a dragon with a keen wit and sly sense of humor who liked to nudge at his clutchmates and try to figure them out. Corvinth's brash swagger as he grew older, was a source of much perplexity to C'sel, who so often kept himself apart from others, only engaging when it seemed to be prudent or necessary. Corvinth though, would have none of that. Sociable and interested in his clutchmates, he drew C'sel out of his shell more and more, not so much by pushing but by /arranging/ things, like meeting up with that blue and his rider, or getting into a game with that green and hers, so that C'sel had to interact with them, get to know them and thus forge bonds with the other weyrlings.
Over the course of weyrlinghood, C'sel and Corvinth together slowly made a place for themselves within the class. While Corvinth favored flashy flying and making a name for himself in the weyrling wing, C'sel was always more restrained, more measured in his approach, reining in his show-off lifemate. They came to be known as a very balanced, reliable pair, with a good blend of proactiveness, largely driven by Corvinth, and prudence, largely coming from C'sel. They mustered into the wings right on time with the rest of the class, joining a heavy wing that was orienting mostly on transport for the Interval.
Seven turns after he Impressed, the Comet Pass struck and C'sel and Corvinth were thrown into the fray of fighting Thread when C'sel at least had never expected to see it in their lifetime. Corvinth was typically gung-ho about the whole thing, instinct and personality combining to make him keen to burn Thread from the skies and prove himself as a valiant fighter of the ancient menace. C'sel while dedicated and determined, was not so convinced about the need to throw themselves into things quite so heartily. He applied his usual care and prudence to the task and tried to keep Corvinth, ever eager, on a tight leash. Unfortunately, in the heat of one Thread battle, C'sel was not able to maintain that control and Corvinth, over-zealous about a clump of stray Thread, broke formation and earned the pair the first of several scores. None were so severe as to cause permanent damage or disability, but each one grounded the pair for a while, leaving Corvinth to impatiently gnash his teeth while C'sel privately enjoyed the relief from having to manage Corvinth's increasingly brash approach to Threadfall.
It was after the sixth such incident that knocked them out of the wing for a seven that C'sel's wingleader came to talk to him about Corvinth's habits and recommended that they take a little downtime to get things back in hand. C'sel was assigned to work with the Weyrlingmaster, to assist with the next clutch off of Igen's sands. Though initially dubious about the work, C'sel found that he enjoyed teaching drill-work and helping to steer Weyrlings who had particularly rambunctious or brash dragons like his own. His manner and style weren't what anyone would call gregarious or warm, but many of the Weyrlings found something to look up to in his restraint and calm affect.
Ultimately, the brownpair returned to the wings two turns before the rogue Thread stopped falling and and served out the rest of the unanticipated mini-Pass in their wing without any hitches but the odd wingtip burn. With the Interval resuming its regular course, Corvinth after all that excitement for eight turns, started to get restless again two turns in and this time C'sel requested assignment under the Weyrlingmaster. Handling Corvinth's need for excitement continued to be an on-going trial for C'sel, every few turns needing to change things up again and he started hopping from wing to wing, duty to duty, all in the name of keeping things shiny for Corvinth. A duty run up to the Reaches hooked the dragon's interest in the Weyr with the Seven Spindles and it's he that started pestering C'sel to visit home more often. This is how Corvinth wound up in chasing in more than one greenflight at the Weyr and ultimately catching.
A loose relationship struck up between the dragons in the aftermath of that flight and both riders have gotten to be friends, though nothing more than that. With Corvinth going through yet another bout of restlessness, C'sel after fifteen turns of service at Igen and not much personal change, decided to take on odd plunge and requested transfer to the Reaches in the wake of I'daur's death, citing his experience as a Weyrlingmaster's assistant and his own dragon's attachment at the more northerly Weyr. So it is that he is 'coming home' after nearly half his lifetime away at Igen to settle back in to the Weyr that covers the hold of his birth, with some tenuous relationships in place and sense of trepidation and vague excitement shared with his brown's more definite interest and keenness to try out something new and shake things up a little.
Relationships
- Weyrmated to greenrider Ebeny since she was tapped into the wings. Though C'sel was (and is) taciturn and difficult to get to know, somehow Laurienth's rider managed to confound all of his boundaries. The couple have one daughter, Casseny, born early in Turn 22.
- C'sel's relationship with his parents is somewhat strained on his end, though his father Hebron is pretty much oblivious to this other than some passing disappointment that Cas didn't go into the Farmcraft instead of the Beastcraft. His mother was unhappy that he didn't marry and settle down 'like a good boy' and 'ran off' to Keroon to apprentice instead. She was further mystified by his search and impression and has never quite made her peace with the fact that he impressed brown and has been dubious about his sexual orientation ever since, without wanting to know details. Lately she's been mollified by his weyrmating and production of a grandchild. She finds her 'daughter in law' Ebeny to be extremely odd, but sweet and is willing to overlook the oddity because hey, she bore her a grandchild! While having rather more conservative views than many riders himself, C'sel is uncomfortable with his mother's attitudes and has always felt guilty for 'letting down' his father about the craft.
