Description
Messy black hair hangs limply in front of S'kel's lichen-green eyes, at its longest brushing his shirt collar in curling tendrils. His height is middling, his build caught somewhere between slender and well-muscled. He could be described as good looking - with a strong, angular face, hollowed cheeks, and a sharp, pointed nose - if not for the growth of stubble that obscures his chin and upper lip.
He dresses simply and for the climate. A black wool shirt is layered underneath a brown leather vest, and over that he wears a slim-fitted leather jacket with cuffed sleeves. Black-dyed hide trousers and short brown boots complete the look.
WYSK
S'kel is a recent transfer from Ista Weyr, one that the gossip-mill says is known for his shenanigans and rude behavior.
He's from a small cothold near Tillek Hold, along the banks of the waterfront. His father is Master Fishman Keril and his mother is an accomplished cook.
Though harmless enough, he's good at stirring the pot.
History
Master Fishman Keril had always wanted a son. His dutiful wife had given him six beautiful daughters over the years they had been married, but before they could get around to trying for another, she passed away in a kitchen fire. What was a widowed father of six supposed to do next? Why, marry a young, eligible woman, of course! Keril married his second wife, Asadra, when he was forty and she was a fresh twenty - the age difference didn't seem to bother either, though his daughters had a choice few words about the arrangement. Serikel came into the world screaming on a balmy summer night not two turns later.
They lived a short distance from Tillek, with great access to the waterfront, in a small cothold in a series of cotholds along the banks. They were a majority fisherman, even if a few rebels made their living working at the small minor Holding nearby. As soon as Serikel could walk, Keril was there teaching him the life and love of fishing. How to hold a net, how to cast a line, or simply how to clean and gut a fish. It was a humble livelihood, but an enjoyable one. Their family was close and their bellies were always full - Asadra was a cook, after all, with a considerable talent.
By the time he was twelve, Serikel was already shipping out with the other fishermen, earning his sea legs. He showed admirable strength and stamina, and a penchant for disobeying orders, even if the result of his rebellion wasn't disastrous. His father glossed over his penchant for disobedience - it was the mark of youth, he said. Truly, his upbringing as the youngest and one son out of a passel of daughters made him spoiled. Each of his sisters made sure to spoil him in their own way, and never held him accountable for his own actions. He was special, they told him.
Sometime after his sixteenth birthday, his eldest sister took him to a gather at Igen Hold. He was enthralled by the mixture of people, the brightly colored banners flying, and the different stalls, with vendors selling wares. Unexpectedly, a few visiting dragons from Ista Weyr found the youth an exceptionally good match for Search. Hale, healthy, and full of energy, he was to be the perfect candidate.
Month 5 of Turn 25th in the 10th Interval, Serikel became S'kel after Impressing bronze Dieudoneth. Their Impression was nothing remarkable - just another in a line of thirteen Impressions that day. Equally as uneventful was their weyrlinghood. But as they grew up and together, the pair were known for butting heads with their peers and more than once, with their Wingleader. Neither appeared bothered by the typical discipline afforded disobedient riders: extra drills, grounding, and base, demeaning chores. S'kel, at least, would do his part, act straight, and then weeks later start acting up again.
At twenty-six, he put in for a transfer to Fort Weyr. S'kel claimed it was for a change of direction and weather, but the rumors ran rampant. One said he had angered the Weyrleader for the last time, and that man had told him to go of his own accord or be kicked out. Others thought he had an affair that went sour and he wanted to leave before any weyrbrats bore his name as 'father'. Still, some speculated he grew bored of his menial role in the bustling Weyr. And those might be closer to the truth.
