G'laer

Description

Turns of functional physical training must have given Gallagher that leanly muscled frame. Evidence that he's used that training doubtlessly earned the scar that stretches down his brow and the ridge on his nose where the bone didn't heal quite right. Tall at 6'2", he wears his sorrel hair cropped short on the sides, but longer on top crowning his strong, angular face. Despite the evidence of past violence, he doesn't look particularly threatening. His sparse brows frame azurite eyes that naturally suggest sincerity; thin, flexible lips pull easily into a variety of expressions, even broad smiles that reveal a single dimple.

Gallagher's clothes are wholly unremarkable. They're muted colors, made for a functional fit, loose enough that he could conceal small items beneath folds of fabric, but not so loose as to hinder movement. His boots are worn in but not worn out. It's not unusual to see him in a long brown coat when the weather turns chilly.

WYSK

He was a guard at Crom but grew up at High Reaches Weyr and is now back there after being Searched by Taikrin's Szadath and Impressing (surprise!) green Teisyth.

Some might know that he has (and is willing to teach) the following skills: hunting, gathering (herbs and edible plants), sparring, and history.

History

Gallagher was born to Crom-born 'Reaches riders Gallania and B'gherio. He was raised at High Reaches Weyr until he was twelve when he was recruited for his physical potential by the Crom guard. It wasn't that Gallagher was going to be a beast, just that even at a young age, he had a solid combination of strength, agility, and precision. Being from Crom, his parents always impressed upon him that it was an honor to be selected for the Crom Guard, known throughout High Reaches sweep for being some of the best of the best.

Gallagher took well to training, applying himself for the honor of himself, his family, his Weyr, and now his Hold. He learned to harden over the turns, though the softer side was still nurtured through faithful service and contact with his elderly grandparents who still lived at the Hold proper. The soft-side, needless to say, isn't one that's oft shown. Weakness is not tolerated in the Crom Guard. Nor were hobbies cultivated, so as a trainee, he spent much of his time broadening his warrior's mind through studying conflicts in Pern's history, in learning the laws of the land. This isn't to say that he didn't spend his fair share of time doing extra sparring or physical training, because there was plenty of time for that too.

The only hobbies he really took up (because there's not much to do in Crom if you don't like mines) were hunting and gathering. Even so, these were extensions of the arts taught to the guard - a little more practice for weapons like bow and spear, a little more knowledge than what was trained in basic first aid when it came to gathering the herbs that grew in the mountainous terrain around the Hold. His interest in these herbs might have been sparked by the fact that one of his grandmothers is an herbalist, though not formally associated with the Healer Hall, but if this is the case, you'd be hard-pressed to get him to admit it.

At twenty-seven, it's been turns since Gallagher has been considered a trainee. In fact, he's become locally known for the excellence with which he performs his duties, given citations for certain acts while serving with the guard. He's done stints at outlying Holds, a brief stint at one of the mines, though he requested and was granted a transfer from there not long after he arrived (the reasons not publicly disclosed). To all appearances, he's a serious and competent guy.

There are, however, some who are aware of Gallagher's professionally-related extracurricular activities. Some are aware that he hunts bounties when the opportunity presents and the guard is often glad to let him, because he's good at it and his command receives a cut of the bounty for loaning him out. Fewer would know that he sometimes helps people sought by bounties start a new life somewhere quiet. He's not the lone soldier on this front, but one of a small close-knit network. Even the criminal element is aware of Gallagher because though he's good at his job, he's not always what one would call lawful. The criminal element, to some degree, serves its purpose in the greater society, and so long as it doesn't cross his personal lines, he's one to often look the other way.

The story Gallagher brought with him from Crom was that he was Searched by Taikrin's Szadath on day 6, month 13, turn 32 to stand for Iesaryth and Vhaeryth's clutch at High Reaches Weyr.

It wasn't the expected bronze, but the unexpected Gregarious Git-R-Done Green Teisyth who claimed G'laer on the sands on day 22, month 2, turn 33.

Personality

Upon first association, it's likely that the impression Gallagher will leave is the Strong and Silent (or at least 'taciturn') type. The longer the association, the more talkative he will become. He's not antisocial, he just doesn't run his mouth when getting the lay of the land. His smiles are warm enough. When he speaks, he's often decisive, and while intelligent, he's also extremely candid, to the point of too-candid and straight-forward, leaving him being the jerk. He's very mission/goal-oriented; whatever gets the job done.

Dragon: Just because Kozeranth is built solidly doesn't mean that he isn't every inch the agile beast he shouldn't be. His is a mind given to indolence when not engaged in his few passions in life (such as hunting, waking his lifemate at far-too-early-o'clock, eyeing up possibly dangerous inanimate objects, and pouncing upon reflections of light, etc.). His voice is a soft purr, his words ever a little musical if not melodic. (Inspiration: cats.)
Summary: Bagherio was Searched from Crom Hold when he was a sixteen turns old after recently being released from service to the Crom Guard. Though he loved his home, coming to the Weyr gave him all the sense of purpose he'd suddenly been left without. He found a girl to love (Gallania), a dragon, and some months into weyrlinghood found out he was to become a father as well. B'gherio is fiercer in appearance than in character. He's man with strong morals who lets his weyrmate of over thirty-five turns have his share of words for the day. He's the anchor for his family, the calm in the chaos of ten daughters and one son. He's ever-conscious of his duties, but his family is his pride and joy.

Dragon: Far from your stereotypical brown, Hezalth is all speed. It's easy for it to seem like there's never a time that he's not anything but alert, energetic, and on the go. He's driven and fast, built unlike most browns more for high velocity not high endurance. He excels in greenflights but the trade off is lacking in his brethren's stamina for chasing golden tails. His mental voice is like being hooked up to a lightning bolt, sizzling with raw electricity, though the voice comes as a hiss of static more than any more human sound. (Inspiration: speed, the drug.)
Summary: Some would say that being the oldest is difficult. Baeli wouldn't be one of them. Despite being born to very young parents, Baeli never lacked for direction. Head-strong and confident, she was a natural leader from the start. She always had an answer for every question and a question for every answer. When she was offered the chance to Stand for a clutch at Southern Weyr when she was fourteen, she took up the chance without hesitation. She'd always wanted to be a rider and though some bets though her a likely gold choice, it was brown Hezalth that found her on the Southern Sands. Now a wingsecond, Baeli is doing what she's always done: bravely forging ahead on her certain path.

Dragon: Big, burly, and boisterous, Cerzoth is not a dragon easily missed in a pack. He doesn't qualify as lithely built as blues ought to be, but he gets more bulk to throw around, which he likes. Booming is the accented bass that rolls through the minds that touch him, often with the smell of strong spirits, the feeling of furs against the skin, and the chill of cold, cold winter. (Inspiration: Russia in the time of the Czars.)
Summary: Laghnei might've turned out differently, only no sooner was she out did mother put a bun back in the oven, and it quickly became apparent to the toddler that Gallagher would likely die without her help. She was so much older and more experienced, not to mention better with her older sisters, so from the start she was the go-between and thick as thieves with her little brother. She's fairly average where most things are concerned, smart as most, kind as many, and just generally the sort of product one would expect from two Good People making a Good Home for their children. She accepted the offer to Stand when she was sixteen, like her father before her, and Impressed. She's been a competent wingrider since graduating from weyrlinghood.

Summary: Maybe Riola sucked up all the energy while in the womb, because when Baera arrived, she was the opposite of her next oldest sister: sedate, but not in a calm way, in a 'on the verge of sleeping almost always' way. She daydreamed away her Harper lessons and seemed almost to lack a grasp on reality from time to time. When it really counted, she'd focus, but mostly she drifted along from odd job to odd job in the Weyr. She lacked interest in Standing. Lacked interest in apprenticing. Lacked interest in even socializing too much, really. She wrote lovely stories from her daydreaming, but that wouldn't help her earn her keep in the Weyr, so when she proved not entirely incompetent with the laundry, she joined with the other laundresses. Still, she'd rather be out for a long, very slow walk than slaving over the pools.

Aleghra

While Aleghra can manage in the basics of her craft, she's no great musician and her interest lies primarily in studies of law and diplomacy. As she grew older, Aleghra thought of Standing, but decided it wasn't for her, opting, instead, to take the opportunity to apprentice. She's bright, contemplative, and cheerful, not to mention a bit of a nerd. But she's happy that way.

Enchanting, most would call her, though some have seen her darker face, a face that is not to be trifled with. A sly face full of mischief and mayhem. (Inspiration: the sidhe.)
Summary: Gallania was Searched from Crom Hold when she was a headstrong thirteen turn old, and a good thing too, since Faelaerith was to crack shell that Hatching. It was just two turns later that energetic, stubborn, charismatic 'Lana' found her one true love, in another Cromese boy who had been Searched for another clutch on the sands. Lana and Bagherio did what any red-blooded teenagers did, despite candidate rules. Lo' and behold, Bagherio became B'gherio and a short time later Gallania found out she was with child. They've been together, making babies and being wholesome Good People and Proud Parents ever since. (Well, after B'gherio graduated weyrlinghood, anyway.)

After a broken arm when she was seven, she developed a keen interest in the activities in the infirmary and when she came of age to apprentice, the Headwoman was able to send her to the Healer Hall to further her interests. Summary: After the back to back babies that were Laghnei and Gallagher, there was a five turn span in which there was a break from baby making. If any of the older children remember why, none of them are talking. And eventually there was Riola who was so wild, it was like she packed all the insanity of three babies into one slender package. Riola always played with the boys (and usually beat them at their own games), but she was more than just a tom-boy. Riola was a thrill-seeker. She'd had three broken limbs by the time she was twelve, but still, that didn't stop her. Fierce and fearless, Riola meets everyday like a new challenge. When she failed to Impress her first time standing at High Reaches, and a bluerider from Telgar looked her way for the next clutch, she was on the back of his dragon before you could say 'Bye Riola!' She Impressed when she was nineteen and most are surprised she survived some of the stunts she pulled in weyrlinghood. It took her an extra turn to graduate as a result, but now she's with the wings and living for her rest days.
