Candidacy FAQ

Candidacy for Fort's winter 2016 Search Cycle will run from TBD.

What is candidacy all about?

ICly, candidacy is a time for those standing for the clutch to acquaint themselves with the inner workings of the Weyr and become familiar with what it would mean to be a dragonrider at Fort. OOCly, this is a time for all of us to get to know each other better and for applicants to explore the challenges and development that being a candidate provides. We encourage feedback at all times and hope to provide applicants with an enjoyable experience as candidates. Please feel free to contact the Weyr admin at any time with questions, concerns or ideas regarding candidacy.

Do I have to live in the candidate barracks?

If you were searched from outside of Fort Weyr, then yes, you will live in the barracks. If you were already a resident, it is your option whether or not to move your things from your resident room to the barracks or not.

What am I provided when I move into the barracks?

All candidates staying in the barracks may pick a cot to use and are issued a pillow, two sets of sheets, a thinner blanket and a heavy woolen blanket for personal use during candidacy. Candidates who lack adequate clothing will be supplied with hand-me-downs from Stores by the Headwoman. All hand-me-downs will be in reasonably good condition, though some may have visible repairs. Color and pattern choices will be limited to what is on hand in the right sizes at the time. Candidates who do not impress and elect to return to their original homes are expected to return all bedding and clothing in reasonable condition at the end of candidacy. New weyrlings and candidates who do not impress and elect to remain at the Weyr are welcome to keep bedding and clothing issued to them during Candidacy.

Who is responsible for me once I'm a candidate?

IC, candidates are the responsibility of the weyrwomen, the headwoman and her staff. They are responsible for seeing that candidates are ICly settled into the barracks, keeping track of their chore performances, enforcing rules and providing guidance to the candidate group.

OOCly, FTWAdmin are your point of contact if you have questions, ideas or concerns during candidacy.

Are there any rules I need to know about?

The rules of candidacy are pretty simple and are strictly IC, meant to convey a sense of realism and fun to the candidate period but are not intended to pose an impediment to RP.

1. Be respectful. Candidates should show appropriate respect to all. The basic rules of courtesy apply throughout candidacy. A rude word here and there might result in extra chores or similar punishments but constant disrespect could have much stronger consequences.

2. Do not stray far from the Weyr without a rider ICly. This is most strictly enforced in the IC week or two leading up to the hatching.

3. Sex is permitted, but discouraged. Pregnancy, if discovered, will result in a candidate being removed from candidacy.

4. No physical confrontation. Candidates are expected to display control of their emotions and behaviors as prospective riders. Fights will be dealt with very strictly by the Headwoman and Weyrleaders, especially if the parties involved sustain serious injuries (particularly since some injuries would automatically prevent a candidate from standing).

5. No drunkenness. Alcoholic beverages are very common on Pern and candidates are allowed to drink so long as they do not become intoxicated, as intoxication can lead to lapses in judgment, such as breaking other rules.

What do I need to know if I want my character to break the rules?

In character actions make in character consequences (ICA=ICC). Your character is welcome to break the rules, but we recommend +mailing ftwadmin if you're planning to do so in order to work out what consequences will work for you as a player; we don't want to have a situation in which the candidate would ICly be expelled from candidacy if the player would like to see their character impress. If you've played a scene and are uncertain if there would be in character consequences, feel free to check in with admin before posting.

What are my duties as a candidate?

All candidates will receive some education regarding life in the Weyr and life as a rider from the WLM team, harpers and assistant headwomen. Candidates also participate in chores assigned daily by the headwoman and her staff, posted to a board in the common room. Residents or crafters posted to Fort are welcome to continue their prior work in non-chore time as suits your RP.

OOCly, typing '+duty' in a Fort owned room will offer a suggestion of a chore for RP (if it doesn't suit you, feel free to improvise!). For more detailed ideas about what each chore entails, please type '+duty/info cand' in Fort owned room.
