WYSK

Eldest child of Wingleader M'kris and Assistant Headwoman Indalys of Monaco, and granddaughter of former Weyrwoman Corisa, Mirinda lived up to familial expectation when she Impressed her Zaisavyth before her fifteenth turnday, in Turn 23.

She served as Oriane's junior with quiet competence until the end of Turn 38, gaining notice only through the nature of her position, and the antics of her family. Most notably: her brother I'kris' conviction for the murder of High Reaches Weyrwoman Iolene in Turn 30, her father's ascent to Weyrleader in Turn 34, and, finally, accusations made against her father over the death of R'hin in Turn 38.

After Oriane stepped down, Mirinda became Acting Weyrwoman for a very short time before stepping aside for the Weyr Council's choice of Kyouri. This was short-lived: a second Weyr Council edict, in the fourth month of Turn 39, saw Mirinda move to Fort Weyr as Weyrwoman when her Zaisavyth was the first to rise, caught by N'rov's Vhaeryth.

Description

5'5" and slender, Mirinda looks younger than her thirty-odd turns despite the composed way in which she carries herself. She wears her dark hair to shoulder length, bangs hanging low towards her equally-dark eyebrows. Her face is a long oval, pale and unblemished despite turns in Monaco's climate, and set with finely-shaped features: wide brown eyes, rounded nose, and a little bow of a mouth. Although her figure tends towards spare rather than curvy, there's a feminine line to her, one often exaggerated by her simple, but well-cut, wardrobe.

Mirinda's family has been intertwined with the leadership of Monaco Weyr for generations; they've produced weyrwomen, weyrleaders, wingleaders, and even the occasional headwoman. Mirinda is the eldest of her generation, the first child born to M'kris - then a bronzerider and wingleader, son of then-Weyrwoman Corisa - and Indalys, a former candidate and daughter of a minor hold. From childhood, it was understood what Mirinda's duty would be: she would, if at all possible, Impress gold, and if not? She could produce the next generation who might carry on the family's legacy. Her younger brother, Indakris, would be expected to do similar.

Mirinda and her brother were, on a day to day basis, their mother's responsibility; it was Indalys who provided warmth and support, who raised them. But M'kris was a regular figure in their young lives, and it was difficult for either child to forget what was expected of them. For Mirinda, this involved spending time with her grandmother, the redoubtable Corisa, For a girl who, in truth, would have preferred to stay out of the way (and certainly out of the limelight), this was hardly ideal. But... duty. Family.

Corisa's abrupt death when Mirinda was in her early teens changed things, naturally. There was no more 'training' for a position she might never hold, but, instead, there was a new kind of pressure: Monaco now had only a single queen, and that meant Mirinda's opportunity might well come sooner rather than later.

And so it was, with Evielth laying a gold egg when Mirinda was still fourteen. It was younger than Indalys would have preferred, but it was what it was: Mirinda would be on those sands, and if her father had anything to do with it, she would be walking off with Monaco's new queen.

M'kris got his wish. Mirinda walked onto the sands alone, and walked off, not so very long after, with a golden lifemate. Zaisavyth was everything Mirinda was not: dramatic, overwhelming, in the middle of everything. But she was also a true friend and confidant, and that was something Mirinda needed, now, with her father's interest in her redoubled, and the whole Weyr (it seemed) watching. At least with Zaisavyth and Olivya, her best friend who had also Impressed from that clutch, she stood some chance.

The pressure on young Indakris increased, too, though Mirinda was busy enough in the day-to-day sense not to notice as much as perhaps she ought to have. She and Zaisavyth graduated to being Oriane's juniors, and become perhaps not outstanding, but certainly competent.

A full four turns after their Impression, Zaisavyth rose in her first flight, and was caught by bronze Leiventh. Zaisavyth laid a queen, and for political reasons, that queen was promised to High Reaches. This did not bother Mirinda so much, but it did bother M'kris, who disapproved of Monacoan dragons being sent away... and disapproved, very much, of High Reaches' 'exile' queen.

For Mirinda, however, the focus was on Indakris, who would be Standing for the first time. She was delighted when he Impressed his brown Svissath, but M'kris was not; bronze had been the expectation, and anything less was simply... not good enough.

Mirinda knew, but also didn't know, of her brother's despair in the months that followed. She knew he struggled; she didn't know how much. When his Svissath caught Rielsath at High Reaches, she pushed for him to stay for the duration; she was hopeful that it would be a positive experience for him, a chance to be himself away from home, and away from their father's influence.

She was wrong.

The events following Iolene's murder are not ones that Mirinda cares to recall. What's certainly true is that while she condemns what her brother did, she does not condemn him; she misses him, she hates what had to be, and she mourns. It cemented a rift between father and daughter, albeit not one that meant no contact at all. He was her father, and she loved him... and she hated him.

Matters were further complicated when M'kris' Feyzeth caught Evielth and became Weyrleader in turn 34; Mirinda was now in a position where she had to work with her father, something pragmatic Oriane did not properly grasp as an issue. As always, however, Mirinda kept her mouth shut and did her duty, increasingly conscious of how people looked at her. Her father was a bully; increasingly, everyone knew it.

At the end of turn 38, things took a turn for the worse when M'kris was publicly accused of killing R'hin-- the same bronzerider whose bronze had caught Zaisavyth in her first flight, all those turns before. In the immediate aftermath, Oriane stepped down, putting Mirinda in the unenviable position of adjudicating over her own father. Oriane would likely never understand, but Mirinda was firm in her resolve to step aside for another; for Monaco's sake, it was necessary, even if her own dragon railed at the idea.

Which didn't mean it didn't hurt, in some small way, to see Kyouri-- a foreigner-- come in and take what should have been Mirinda's. It hurt, too, when another foreigner became Weyrleader, and a High Reachian at that, whose distrust of Mirinda was made plainly obvious. With her father now neutralised, Mirinda ought to have felt free... but she did not.

Months later, amidst the plague that spread across the northern continent, the Weyr Council chose to name the next junior queen to rise as Weyrwoman to Fort, where the leadership was presently in turmoil. Despite having had no expectations (or desire) for the role, it was scarcely a matter of weeks before Zaisavyth showed signs of proddiness.

Abruptly, Mirinda and her queen were sent to Fort, where Zaisavyth's flight confirmed Mirinda as Fort's Weyrwoman, with N'rov, a stranger (but at least a local) at her side.
