Description
Life hasn't been particularly kind to Chauncey lately. At 6'3, he'd be lanky anyway, all long legs and pointy elbows; but he's gaunt now, too, with sharp cheekbones, any number of scuffs and bruises, and that too-skinny look of somebody who's lost a fair bit of weight recently. His dark hair is not the cleanest, and recently cut short, it tends to stick up at odd angles; but despite this his features combine into something pleasing. Chauncey's a handsome man, or would be with a good bath and a shave. Even now, he's got a winsome smile that can light up a room, with perfect white teeth even if his lips are chapped and split.
A convict's clothes are nothing special, and most of them don't even look like they were made for Chauncey at all, ill-fitting worn-out things that they are. In particular, the shoulders of his shirt pull and the sleeves are a little too short, so that he frequently rolls them up just to make them a little less annoying. When he does so, his left forearm shows a M branded into the skin there.
WYSK
- Chauncey's a convict from Nabol. Or Nerat. Or somewhere starts-with-N, at any rate.
- He got dragged to the Weyr along with the other criminals being used as slave labor for the new Star Stones.
- Since then, his greatest accomplishment has been making puppy-dog eyes at all the girls and goldbricking his way through actual work.
History
If Pern actually kept up with rap sheets, Chauncey's would probably be as long as his... Well, at this rate, as long as all of him. He'd definitely clean up at felony bingo, though.
Born to Lemosians of no particular repute, Chauncey wasn't Chauncey back then. What his original name was, he probably doesn't even remember now, because as soon as he could escape that boring backwoods life, he did. With a new name and no useful skills, he didn't make it far before he was resorting to mooching off of the kindly holders who were happy to give a poor orphaned youngster a bed for the night--only to discover their stash of marks was gone in the morning, and nobody in the area had ever even heard of that kid or his supposedly recently dead parents.
Cons were the name of the game, and Chauncey was pretty good at them, more or less. He grew up into a handsome, charming young man who knew exactly what the ladies wanted to hear; and quite a number of them found more than their maidenhood missing come daylight again. From the quick gather pickpocket to the long con on some poor holder's wife, Chauncey had a new name for every hold and a new outfit too--no wonder he was always having to steal more, especially with creditors reputable and not hounding after his trail.
Still, he wasn't a violent man, as testified to by the number of times he got his ass kicked when the holder found out what was going on. Chauncey couldn't fight to save his life, and tended to fall apart when things got sticky, which got him in more than his fair share of scrapes when the jig was up. He's an thief, counterfeiter, liar, and scoundrel, but not a murderer, for whatever that counts.
Several turns passed in this manner, with him mostly staying ahead of guards circulating their pictures and holders out for blood. He was in and out of custody on a few occasions, and he's done a couple of stints in the mines under various aliases already. But eh, you live, you learn, you get better at liberating old widows' jewelry.
Eventually, though, he found himself in hotter water than usual. An ambitious and ill-advised con on Lord Telgar left him captured again and sent to Crom to work the mines--though he had no intention of staying there this time. A little wheedling on one of the rare female overseers, a tad bit falsifying of his record, and Chauncey earned a spot on the crews heading to the Reaches, where he can make another go of making good.
Relationships
- Chauncey does not fit in with guys. Oh, sure, he tries to act tough, but it's pretty obvious he's a pansy. Word has it he cried like a girl when they started ferrying the cons up to empty weyrs to sleep.
- The corollary to this is that Chauncey really likes girls, and the more innocent the better. He's a charmer and a liar who mostly hopes he can skip town before all his different girls can start comparing stories.
- Most of all, Chauncey seems to have a thing for Madilla. She's perfect and wholesome and lovely and far too good for him, and the sort of girl he would put on a pedestal and worship--and best of all, the type of girl who believes all that bullshit he feeds her.
