Month 3 - Month 4

Soarin'. Flyin'. There's Not a Star in Heaven That We Can't Reach

This month marks another big milestone for your dragon, who will begin soaring through the skies on his own. But as much as you'd like to join them, unfortunately, the muscles your dragon has built won't quite suffice to safely carrying any weight on their wings-but soon, very soon. In fact, can't you smell the air rushing past your face as you fly for the first time? With the dragons all having learned to glide just off the ground, they are now allowed to venture higher under the weyrlingmasters' supervision. They will take short flights around the bowl, gradually lengthening the distance as they continue to strengthen and to get practice at being in the air. They are still restricted to hunting on the ground, though, no matter how much they itch to try aerial hunting for themselves. And just think: in another month you'll be up there with them!

As for you, you'll be quite busy with your own duties. The strenuous exercises designed to build your muscles will continue. You'll run and you'll carry loads in the mornings to continue this strength training. And after having spent the last month learning all about wing drills, you'll be putting those into practice after lunch. You'll spend your afternoon practicing these drills outside and on the ground on most days, and you may start to wish that all this ground drilling had actually happened sometime other than mid-summer.

Also, this month, with its introduction of practical ground drills and formations, marks the initiation of the weyrling wingleader, a position that will rotate periodically through the remainder of weyrlinghood. Simultaneously, some weyrlings will find a new silver thread on their cots, designed to be added into their weyrling knot. This is for those who have already displayed leadership potential, and they will be initiated in the Reaches' weyrling leadership program to hone those skills with advanced lessons. Everybody else gets to enjoy the extra free time they get by not having more lessons!

And with this free time comes additional privileges, as the rules finally loosen up on you. While curfew holds steady, you are now permitted to drink in moderation-though anyone caught getting drunk will be punished and it is generally not to disrupt actual work. (So you're still best off waiting for the end of the day.) As for the no-sex rule? While it technically holds in effect, the weyrlingmaster will probably turn a blind eye to a little more stretching of the rules, but we're talking strictly first base. Anything more than that remains off-limits, and it's additionally frowned upon for older riders and weyrfolk to become involved with weyrlings. Basically, stick to kissing other weyrlings and you're in the clear, as far as the weyrlingmaster is concerned.
